Note
This is a very unusual Lucas atlas - according to Foster, only two copies are known. The engraved title page shows a globe and books on a table, with pages open listing Lucas' products: "Drawing Materials of every kind, Paper of all sizes, Mathematical Instruments, Globes, Maps, and Atlases of every description suitable for Colleges and Schools constantly for sale by the Publisher." It has 31 of the Tanner and Harrison engraved maps of the continents and foreign countries that appeared in the (1815) and (1816) "New And Elegant General Atlas" (only Netherlands bears Lucas' imprint, engraved by Young & Delleker, and is basically the same as the map that appears in the 1823 "General Atlas Containing Distinct Maps..." ). Of the remaining 36 maps, 8 are of South America and the West Indies and are unchanged in the 1823 atlas; the other 28 maps are in many cases early states of the new U.S. maps that appear in the 1823 atlas and replace the Tanner engraved U.S. maps of 1815 and 1816 atlases. They all have Lucas' imprint and show various engravers, Welch, Young & Delker, Cone & Freeman, Kneass, and Hufty. Compared to the early 1823 atlas (our #4584), 16 of the 28 U.S. maps are earlier issues, with only one being a later issue - New Hampshire shows Merrimack County (1823) which does not appear on the early 1823 atlas map (this was probably drawn in anticipation of creation). Of particular note are: Louisiana, a double page map engraved by Harrison and "Reduced from W. Darby's Four Sheet Map" which is dated 1817 as does not show Alabama or Arkansas Territory; and a map of "North Western and Michigan Territories" which is the same base map as the 1823 "Michigan Ter." but shows a much smaller Michigan in a configuration that Paullin dates as 1819 with a large North Western Territory extending to the west. Karpinski 94 incorrectly dates this map as "certainly as late as 1824" while mentioning that Phillips dates it 1819 (?). We cannot find the Phillips entry, but we bel

37 manuscript maps of the world, done by a young lady, Frances Bowen, as part of a geographical exercise. The result is very fine -- these are some of the most delicate and well executed children's maps we have seen. The paper is watermarked J. Whatman 1808 and E & P 1804, both English watermarks, hence the assumption of English origin (furthermore the meridian is from London on the World and U.S. maps) although it could be American. There is a double page map of the World, another of the Mediterranean, maps of all the continents and countries of Europe and Asia, and maps of the United States, North America, West Indies, and South America. Rebound with marbled paper boards and quarter leather with "General Atlas, Frances Bowen - 1810" on the spine.

Note
This atlas is exceptional for its "spheroidal" maps of the globe, showing the various continents and poles, shaded to give the effect of a sphere floating in space. The remaining maps are also very well executed and colored, mostly by hand, a few in colored litho. In recent years, this atlas has become rare in the trade. This is the only atlas that Garnier produced, according to Phillips. Tooley lists an 1860 edition. Covers are quarter leather marbled paper covered boards with a paper label; the burgundy leather spine is embossed with "F.A. Garnier. Atlas Universel et Spheroidal de Geographie" in gilt. On verso of half-title: Paris -- Imprimerie de P.-A. Bourdier et Cie., Rue Mazarine, 30.

Note
First issued in 1887, this atlas is the successor to John Arrowsmith's London Atlas of 1858 (Stanford acquired Arrowsmith's plates upon his death). The first issue of the second edition appeared in 1893, with updated second editions of 1896, 1898, and this 1901. The third edition was issued in 1904 (see our #949) and Phillips (mistakenly) shows the next and last edition as (1928--actually 1931 according to Herbert in Imago Mundi p. 120). This is a magnificent atlas, in full color lithography, certainly the premier atlas of its day. With the bookplate of Andrew Carnegie. Custom? bound in full blue leather covered boards with titled stamped in gold reading "London Atlas Of Universal Geography" on the front cover, and "Atlas. Stanford London 1901" on the spine. Title age in red and black type.

Note
The first edition with the earliest states of all the maps. Many believe this to be the finest atlas published in the United States in the 19th century. The text essay (included here) is a wonderful compilation of information on the contemporary maps that Tanner used as sources. Tanner updated the maps frequently over the next two decades, and issued several editions or compilations of the atlas with the title pages dated 1823 or 1825, but with some of the maps dated as late as 1833. The collation of our six issues shows that no two copies are alike and that the maps were being constantly updated; however the choice of maps for each edition reveals a somewhat haphazard approach with some of the earliest states of a particular map appearing the one of the later atlas editions. A completely revised edition was issued in 1839, with the title page and most of the maps dated 1839 (see P1382). Hand painted in outline color with a full color wash. Atlas is bound in half leather marbled paper covered boards with "Tanner's American Atlas" stamped in gilt on a front leather label.
