List No 0875B
Note This small hand atlas has six early maps, three of which are particularly important to the mapping of the American Revolution: The Seat of War in the Northern Colonies and The seat of War in the Middle British Colonies (both derived from the Evans/Pownall maps), and the Seat of War in the Southern Colonies (by Bernard Romans). Nicknamed the "Holster Atlas" because it was made for the used of British army officers. All maps in outline color, folded and bound into book with paper covered boards and quarter leather with "American Pocket Atlas" stamped in gilt on the spine.

List No 4609A
Note According to Phillips, Joseph Churchman authored the text and James Churchman (brother?) authored the map. The map, 42x53, is most extraordinary and rare: it shows an eagle superimposed in engraving and color on a map of the United States, with the talons in Florida, the eye in Vermont, and the wings spreading west to the Missouri Territory. It is beautifully done. Pages 244-48 of the text explain the construction of the Eagle map, it is also stated here that the author intended to publish a larger version of the map by subscription. I have found no record of such a map being published. Book covered with blue cloth with "Rudiments of National Knowledge" on spine.

Full Title (Title Page to) Storia Dell' America Settentrionale Del Signor Abate Raynal Continuata fino al present, con Carte Geografiche rappresentanti il Teatro della Guerra Civile tra la Gran Bretagna, e le Colonie Unite. A SS. EE. Li Signori Rifoormatori Dello Studio Di Padova. In Venezia, Dalle Stampe Di Antonio Zatta Con Licenza De Superiori, E Privilegio. M. DCC. LXXVIII.
List No 5007A
Note In addition to a two volume Italian translation of Raynal's History of North America, this book contains the first edition of Zatta's twelve sheet version of Mitchell's Map of North America, plus three other maps: Il Canada, Le Isole di Terra Nuova e Capo Breton, and La Baja D' Hudson. All of these maps appeared also in Zatta's Atlante Novissimo published from 1779-1785. A second edition of the Zatta/Mitchell maps was published in 1791 (see P651). Zatta's version of Mitchell is not an exact or complete copy: the Zatta maps do not cover the far western portions of Mitchell's map, many geographical changes are introduced, and Bermuda is depicted as well as Jamaica., neither of which are shown by Mitchell. A separate map covers Newfoundland and Cape Breton, on the same scale. Maps are hand painted with outline color. Covers are quarter leather light brown marbled paper covered boards with "Raynal. Storia Dell' America Settentrionale. 1778" stamped in gilt on the new leather spine.

Palmer, Printer.
List No 0122B
Note 1st Edition, Fielding Lucas engraved most of the maps. The 1823 edition was unchanged in most copies, a few have minor map updates, and one (see our copy) has all of the 1827 edition maps while still retaining the 1823 title page and most of the text. The 1827 edition includes much new material, with all the maps and text updated, except for the Washington, D.C., and Michigan maps. A French edition by Buchon was published in 1825, an abridged London edition in 1823 (see our copies), and a German edition by C.F. Weiland in 1824-1828 (P1225, Espenhorst 1.6.3). This was the first American Atlas that was modeled on Le Sage's plan of having explanatory text surrounding the maps. The maps are beautifully drawn and colored. Lucas went on to publish his own General Atlas in 1823, using similar maps but without the text. Rebound into half leather tan paper covered boards with "American Atlas. 1822." stamped in gilt along the spine.

Authors Finley, Anthony
Full Title (Title Page to) A New American Atlas, Designed Principally To Illustrate The Geography Of The United States Of North America, In Which Every Country In Each State And Territory Of The Union Is Accurately Delineated, As Far As At Present Known: The Whole Compiled From The Latest And Most Authentic Information. Philadelphia: Published By Anthony Finley, At The North-East Corner Of Chestnut And Fourth Streets. 1826.
List No 0278B
Note This atlas was Finley's attempt to compete with Henry Tanner's American Atlas - the maps are grouped in much the same arrangement as Tanner used and the cartography and engraving are equal to Tanner, although the scale and map size are smaller. There are only two issues that we have seen, both dated 1826 on the title page, but with different dates on the maps. In the first issue, the maps are dated 1824-26, in the second issue (this copy) the maps are dated 1826-27. Finley continued to publish the maps as pocket maps until 1831 when he sold his map and atlas copyrights to Mitchell, who reissued this American Atlas only once, in 1831 (see our #3884) but continued to issue the pocket maps, with updates, until about 1850. Bound in half leather marbled paper covered boards with red leather label stamped with "Finley's American Atlas" in gilt. Full color.

Full Title (Title Page to) The American Atlas: Or, A Geographical Description Of The Whole Continent Of America ... Engraved On Forty-Eight Copper Plates, By The Late Mr. Thomas Jefferys, Geographer to the King, and Others. London, Printed and Sold by R. Sayer and J. Bennett, Map and Print Sellers, No. 53, Fleet-Street. MDCCLXXVI.
List No 0346B
Note One of the most important atlases of the American Revolutionary War period. There are 22 maps on 29 sheets. The majority of the important large scale maps of the colonies are here, appearing together for the first time after having been issued as separates by Jefferys in the 1750's and 60's. This copy is the 1st 1776 edition, with the Quebec map, without the Lake Champlain map, as issued. This copy is the same as NMM 361, except the title page says 48 copper plates rather then the 49 on NMM 361, and on the NY/NJ map it is Major Holland rather than Capt. Holland (our NY/NJ map says Major-the 1775 says Capt-our index omits Holland-the reproduction atlas map copy says Major, and Carver is eliminated (why?), probably indicates that this was slightly before the NMM 361, as the 1775 title page is identical to this one (although we have not seen it yet-relying on P1165), except for the date. Summary of editions: 1775 (actually issued in 1776, has Evans Middle Colonies map, P1165), 1776 1st issue (our copy with 48 on TP, Quebec replaces Evans, N.Y- & N.J. is dated 1776, rather than 1775 and adds Pownall corrections and improvements), 1776 2nd issue (NMM 361, 49 on TP), 1777 (1776 on TP, N. Amer changes from Bowen/Gibson to Pownall version with 1777 on map, adds L. Champlain, P1166 -our reproduction copy), 1778 (P3659a, NMM 362, no changes from 1777), 1782 (P1169, no changes except Phillips says this copy has 1783 ed of N. Amer., inserted-later?) Our TP is a transition from 1775 to NMM361, NMM361 anticipates the Lake Champlain map in saying 49 plates. Covers are half leather brown cloth covered boards with "Jeffery's American Atlas. London MDCCLXXVI" stamped in gilt on the spine.

Note This Quarto issue of the report is the House issue, except for volume XI which is the Senate issue. W. Heckrotte has an unusual copy of the Warren U.S. map found in this report. It is dissected on linen and is an earlier version of the map published with the Quarto report. It has 40 authorities vs. 42 in the quarto issue map, shorter note to left of authorities, lots of plate differences, especially: nothing in Owyhee area, differences in N.M., Calif., etc. Looks like someone asked for the map before it was finished -see the Lack of ocean lines in the top half south of Gray's Harbor. In 13 volumes. Bound in full leather with "Explorations and Surveys for a Railroad to the Pacific Ocean" and the volume number on the spine in gold.

Full Title (Title Page to) Maps and charts of the United States Coast Survey. A.D. Bache, Superintendent. To July, 1854.
List No 2470C
Note Not an Annual Report! Unique edition-all engraved. A set of most of the Coast Survey maps published to July 1854, and all are engraved instead of lithographed as were the maps in the annual reports. Each map has the unique inscription at the top reading "Presented under authority of an act of Congress of the United States of June 3d 1844 by direction of the Treasury Department A.D. Bache Superintendent Coast Survey." U.S. Atlases lists another edition (L3666) of 1856. Bound with half leather and marble paper covered boards with title in gilt on spine. David Rumsey Collection copy: the chart "Sea Coast of Delaware, Maryland and part of Virginia" is lithographed rather than engraved. Laid in is a broadside published by the Survey "Coast Survey charts published, sketches and preliminary charts, the following sketches will be gratuitously distributed:, Agents for sale of maps:, Coast Survey Office, Washington, March 15, 1853" (our pub. list no. 5754).

Note Exquisite hand drawn maps of the states. Notwithstanding the title, this is a geography book hand drawn by a very promising student. It includes descriptions of Astronomical Geography, the Ptolemaic, Brahean and Copernican Systems, Comets, Great Circles, Equator, Meridian, Horizon, Colures, Tropics, Polar Circles, Zones, Climates, Latitude and Longitude, a section titled America, and 19 maps of the states with a descriptive page for each. The maps are copied from the 1805 edition of Carey's American Pocket Atlas, except for Ohio, which is from Arrowsmith and Lewis' Atlas, 1812, and Indiana, from an unknown source. The text is copied from Morse's Geography Made Easy, probably 1807, 11th edition, but certainly before the 12th edition (which was changed substantially), the text describing the maps is original. The only mystery is why she used such out of date sources if, in fact, she made this book in 1823. The penmanship is remarkable both in the execution of the maps and text. One of a kind. At the bottom of the title page: "presented to her son T.A. Post - Feb 4th 1872." Emma Willard led the Middlebury Female Academy from 1807-9, see DAB.

Note Map has many changes from 1839 edition. Michigan peninsula has been redrawn, Missouri Territory is now Indian Territory, many changes in roads, towns, etc. Inset map of New Orleans has been dropped to show the emerging Iowa (the same change Tanner made in 1842 with his Traveller's Guide). The text adds population figures for 1840. The condition of this guide is remarkably fine - it must not have been used, just put away for 150 years. Covers are stamped red leather with "Mitchell's Travellers Guide Through The United States" in gilt. Outline color. The map contains eight inset maps showing the vicinities of Cincinnati, Albany, Falls of Niagara, Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington, and Charleston.

Note First atlas of America printed in America. First edition. These maps were also published in Carey's American edition of Guthrie's Geography (1795) and most of the maps say "engraved for Carey's American edition of Guthrie's improved." The maps were again used for the 1796 edition of Carey's General Atlas, unchanged except for the Tennessee map, which is titled "Tennassee State" instead of "Tennassee Government" which is the title in both the American Atlas and the Guthrie Atlas - see Wheat and Brun, and has several counties delineated in the eastern part of the state which do not show in the 1795 edition of the map. NMM 480 (American Atlas) has "Tennassee State" indicating that Carey was not consistent. This atlas was the model for John Reid's American Atlas of 1796. This copy's maps have very strong impressions. Rebound quarter leather, marbled paper covered boards.

Note Includes index to maps. First edition. The cartography is elegant and understated. The eighteen maps and text comprise a general atlas of North America, with special emphasis on Texas and California. The Texas map shows in colored outline the lands granted to the Adelsverein and has the post road from Indianola to New Braunfels marked in red. The map of Oregon, California, Utah, New Mexico, etc. shows the gold regions in California and has an inset map of San Francisco Bay. There is also a striking separate map of San Francisco Bay titled "Bai San Francisco und Vereinigung des Sacramento mit dem San Joaquin." It has a lovely inset view of San Francisco and shows the routes by river to Sacramento and San Joaquin. Also issued under the title of "Kartenwerk zu dr. Karl Andree's Nord-Amerika," see P1231. Outline color. Bound in patterned paper covered boards with dark blue cloth spine with "Lange Atlas von Nord-amerika" stamped in gold.

List No 2749A
Note 1st edition of the first geological map of U.S. A portion of a map of the U.S. by Samuel Lewis is used to make this map. The full sheet of paper was put on a larger plate and pulled, leaving the upper and right side without borders, as issued. Uncut and untrimmed, the map appears here with Maclure's original essay on the geology of the U.S. In 1817 Maclure published an expanded versus of his essay, using the small Melish Map of the U.S. as a base. Maclure was dissatisfied with the Lewis map because of its rendering of the mountains, and an errata slip is attached to the back of p 423 explaining this (and stating that originally it was intended to use a reduction of the Bradley U.S. map). See Marcou 1858 for more discussion of the Lewis map. Maclure did a Paris printing of the article and Map (using a map by Volney as a base) in 1811, in French. The Lewis map is most likely the Map of the U.S. published in the 2nd edition of Carey's American Atlas, 1809 (P-Maps p 876,Walsh). Maclure's map and essay are very rare. There is an inscription on the title page to "Mons. F.A. Michaux-Paris, from his friend..." Map bound into the back of paper covered boards with the title handwritten on the spine. Map in full color by geologic structure.

List No 2755C
Note 2nd edition, maps and title page dated 1825, except S.A. 1823. Like P3669, except S.A. dated 1823 and N.A. dated 1825. Fine copy with extra large sheets bound in full tree calf edged in gilt - the most beautiful and elegant binding we have seen of an American Atlas, stamped "Davis, Binder - Philada." The spine is titled "American Atlas" on a red leather label in gilt. Memoir dated 1825, with slight changes from the 1823 memoir. The index sheet is numbered 1-22 in two columns, vs in one column in the 1823 edition and in two columns numbered 1-17 in the 1833 editions. The maps of the World and America have Arctic discoveries not shown in earlier editions, as does the N.A. map which also shows the Russian Alaska boundary of 1824. The state maps have various updates from the earlier issues (mostly adding counties) although three (Maine etc., Penn., N. & S. Carolina) have 1825 dates with no obvious changes from the earlier issues. See our table comparing all five editions map by map. According to Wolter (Mountains & Rivers article) the 1825 S.A. map has a more elaborate mountains and rivers diagram than any earlier issues. This issue of the atlas can be truly called an edition - all the maps have 1825 dates and the geography is current, the 1823 parts issue is also an edition. Later editions were compilations - some maps were updated, others were not or were taken from out of date issues. Full color.

Illustrated with correct Maps of the Western Territory of North America, of the State of Kentucky, as divided into Counties, from actual Surveys by Elihu Barker, a Map of the Tenasee Government, and a Plan of the Rapids of the Ohio. The Third Edition With Great Additions. London: Printed For J. Debrett, Opposite Burlington House, Piccadilly. 1797.
List No 2757A
Note Clark II-41. Third and best edition. Streeter: "The most complete version of this work, in which form it was the most informative compilation on the West at the end of the 18th century." Complete text of Filson's Kentucky, Hutchins on Florida, etc., and much else. The Map of the State of Kentucky, by Elihu Barker is a slight reduction in size from the original by Carey, but not as great a reduction as the edition of the map that appeared in Carey's American Atlas and General Atlas in 1795 (cf Wheat & Brun 641, 642). The London version of the Barker map seems to have the same information as the Philadelphia, but they are very different in engraving style with the Philadelphia copy having an "American" look. Clark is critical of the accuracy of Imlay's letters, which were probably written in Europe after he fled Kentucky and financial problems. See DAB for another critical view of Mr. Imlay.

Note U.S. Map by Drake/Hazard shows many new railroads compared to the 1856 edition. The Mitchell/Young U.S. map adds Dakota, Arizona, and many new railroad routes. This was the last year of Desilver publishing Mitchell's guide (although Buck claims to have seen an 1864 (?) issue). Enlarged catalogue of Desilver publications (which mention no map or atlas publications, indicating that Desilver was phasing out the map business, just as Mitchell's son was starting the New General Atlas edition). Bound into blue cloth covers with "Mitchell's New Traveller's Guide Through The United States" and a beautiful illustration stamped in gilt (which is changed from the 1856 edition). Outline color in both maps.

List No 2766.002
Note This is a major revision of the guide with an entirely new map by Ira S. Drake (about whom we find nothing) with five inset maps entitled - "Vicinity Of Niagara Falls", "Map Of The Copper Mine Region", "Map of the Gold and Quicksilver district of California", "Map of the Maritime and Overland Routes to California", and "Map Of New England Or Eastern States". The map emphasis on the California gold rush is clear, although the 128 pages of expanded text do not yet list routes to the gold fields, while they do add routes west from St. Louis and Independence. The main map is larger than the earlier Mitchell/Young maps, but shows roughly the same area on a somewhat larger scale. An "Advertisement" (actually a preface) dated Nov. 1, 1848, states: "The following work is similar in design to 'Mitchell's Traveller's Guide,' first published about twelve years ago, and which has been so extremely patronized, that it may be safely asserted no book of the kind ever printed in this country has met with so wide a circulation." Covers are black stamped leather with "Mitchell's New Traveller's Guide Through The United States" and a beautiful illustration of a steam boat and train stamped in gilt. Map is outline color. Catalogue of Thomas, Cowperthwait School Books included in the text.

Note This was the first General Atlas published in the United States. It has the same maps as Carey's Guthrie Atlas, and adds a large map of the United States by Samuel Lewis, which is an imposing and important map, lacking in most copies. The Lewis map of the United States appears here for the first time. Even though the contents page of Carey's Guthrie Atlas calls for a map of the United States, it is not found in any copies that we know of. Karpinski (CXIV) incorrectly says this map appeared in the American Atlas of 1795. These maps are not folded horizontally, as are the 1795 Guthrie maps, and the Map of France has a 1798 engraving credit that does not appear on the Guthrie 1795 issue. This copy also contains a map not belonging to this atlas, glued inside the back cover, entitled "Chart of the Atlantic Ocean" published by Edmund M. Blunt, Newburyport in 1802. Atlas is bound in quarter leather, brown and black patterned paper covered boards.
