He was formally ordered "to examine and describe the geological structure, geographical condition and natural resources of a belt of country extending from the 120th meridian eastward to the 105th meridian, along the 40th parallel of latitude with sufficient expansion north and south to include the lines of 'Central' and 'Union Pacific' railroads..." (Wheat). The topographical sheets depict features by brush shading rather than hachuring. In original binding -rare. Bound in green half leather with a label on the front, "Geological and Topographical Atlas Accompanying the Report of the Geological Exploration of the Fortieth Parallel. Note
Considered to be the best book on California prior to the American occupation. Wheat calls the large map "a landmark...It made these western regions known in European official circles...his highly original map has much to commend it." Wheat neglects to mention the similarities between this map and the John Arrowsmith Map of British North America, 1837 edition. While not a copy of the Arrowsmith, it clearly followed the Arrowsmith map in most areas. The atlas volume contains, in addition to the large map, plans of ports from Acapulco to the Aleutians, including San Diego, Santa Barbara, Monterey, San Francisco, and the mouth of the Columbia. The chart of San Francisco Bay is based on Beechey's chart of 1833, improved by de Mofras' own explorations, particularly in the north bay. This copy belonged to the Prince of Coburg, with a presentation inscription from the author. The large map is hand painted in outline color, all others are without color. Covers of the volumes are half leather dark green cloth covered boards with a crown embossed on the front in gilt. The title "De Mofras. Mexique. Californie. Oregon. 1" is stamped in gilt on the spine of volume one, "... 2" on volume two, and "...Atlas" on the atlas. Rare.

Note
Extremely rare, unusual directory made up of drawn illustrations of the building street fronts and business establishments of every building on the blocks of the downtown area of San Francisco. Almost all of these buildings were destroyed by the fire of 1906. Published in 11 parts in 1894 and 1895, this copy is complete. The Rocq listing is for parts 4-11; the Norris copy had nine parts. Norris states that this directory is "Very Scarce and valuable." This copy belonged to noted San Francisco historian Margot Patterson Doss, with her signature and address on the front end paper. The illustrations of the buildings are very well done. A unique directory; most surviving copies have only nine of the eleven parts. Another directory was done for Oakland, California (Rocq 817). Cloth covered boards with "The Illustrated Directory, San Francisco" on cover.

Note
Fourth part of the nine original parts of four colored maps each, in illustrated printed wrappers, of Morse's North American Atlas. Each part is dated 1845, so we assume they were all issued in that year, one or two a month. The "Plan of Publication" on the front wrapper of each part calls for ten numbers, but only nine were issued. The wraps are decorated with a palm tree, fir tree, bear, giraffe, and four seals for each of the continents. The cheap price of the product is stressed: "Each number will contain four coloured Maps, the price of which will be twenty five cents, being about one fourth the cost of copper plate Maps of similar size." After publication of the parts, Morse also issued the complete atlas bound (see our #2301). This nine part issue is to be distinguished from the earlier three part issue of 32 uncolored maps as supplements to the New York Observer (see our #4180). This copy with the signature and ms index of Robert Rantoul of Beverly, Massachusetts, noted lawyer and reformer. Printed full color. This copy is folded into green cloth covered boards which slips into a quarter leather green cloth covered folio box titled "Morse's North American Atlas - 9 Original Parts - New York, 1845" in gold along the spine.
