Full Title (Title Page to) The American Military Pocket Atlas, Being An approved Collection of Correct Maps, Both General and Particular, of The British Colonies, Especially those which now are, or probably may be The Theatre of War: Taken principally from the actual Surveys and judicious Observations of Engineers De Brahm and Romans, Cook, Jackson, and Collet, Maj. List No 0875B
Note This small hand atlas has six early maps, three of which are particularly important to the mapping of the American Revolution: The Seat of War in the Northern Colonies and The seat of War in the Middle British Colonies (both derived from the Evans/Pownall maps), and the Seat of War in the Southern Colonies (by Bernard Romans). Nicknamed the "Holster Atlas" because it was made for the used of British army officers. All maps in outline color, folded and bound into book with paper covered boards and quarter leather with "American Pocket Atlas" stamped in gilt on the spine.

Note This was one of the first United States atlases to exclusively feature railroad lines, showing minimal topography (in this later edition more topographical features are added, earlier editions have fewer features shown ) and only showing towns on or next to the railroads lines. We find the maps most interesting and beautiful, although some might find them a bit spare. This copy was published late in 1874 and is the most complete edition. Contains maps of Washington, Wyoming, Montana, New Mexico, Arizona, Western Texas, etc. (similar to our early 1874 edition). The western United States maps are especially interesting. Full color. Bound in quarter leather dark brown and red cloth covered boards stamped with the title "Asher & Adams' new commercial and statistical alas and gazetteer of the United States." in gilt, the same title is blind stamped on the back cover. The remaining leather of the original spine reads "Asher & Adams' atlas and gazetteer of the U.S." Page numbering discontinuous.

Note From the Carey & Lea 1822 and 1823 American Atlas editions. Comparison to Carey and Lea edition of 1822: most of the state maps are similar, except Georgia, Louisiana, New York adds information on Canadian coast of Lake Erie, U.S. map adds Long's information in the west and labels the Great American Desert (in the 1822 edition Carey & Lea used Long's information on Map 35, but only slightly on the U.S. map, as they explain in their note on the U.S. Map), Phillips points out some of the other differences -- N. America shows Russian America and a Map of Russian America reflects the treaty of 1825, Mexico is different, Guatemala is added, Guadeloupe and Martinique are substituted for the Windward and Leeward Islands Maps, maps of Guyana and Paraguay are added in S. America. In general, some of the United States maps are taken from the 1822 and early 1823 editions (for example, Illinois and Indiana are from the 1822/23) and some are from the later 1823/26 edition (the U.S. and Louisiana, for example). Full color. Covers are new half leather mauve marbled paper covered boards with "Buchon. Atlas des Deux Ameriques" stamped on the spine in gold.

Note 1st Edition, Fielding Lucas engraved most of the maps. The 1823 edition was unchanged in most copies, a few have minor map updates, and one (see our copy) has all of the 1827 edition maps while still retaining the 1823 title page and most of the text. The 1827 edition includes much new material, with all the maps and text updated, except for the Washington, D.C., and Michigan maps. A French edition by Buchon was published in 1825, an abridged London edition in 1823 (see our copies), and a German edition by C.F. Weiland in 1824-1828 (P1225, Espenhorst 1.6.3). This was the first American Atlas that was modeled on Le Sage's plan of having explanatory text surrounding the maps. The maps are beautifully drawn and colored. Lucas went on to publish his own General Atlas in 1823, using similar maps but without the text. Rebound into half leather tan paper covered boards with "American Atlas. 1822." stamped in gilt along the spine.

Full Title (Title Page to) A New American Atlas, Designed Principally To Illustrate The Geography Of The United States Of North America, In Which Every Country In Each State And Territory Of The Union Is Accurately Delineated, As Far As At Present Known: The Whole Compiled From The Latest And Most Authentic Information. Philadelphia: Published By Anthony Finley, At The North-East Corner Of Chestnut And Fourth Streets. 1826.
List No 0278B
Note This atlas was Finley's attempt to compete with Henry Tanner's American Atlas - the maps are grouped in much the same arrangement as Tanner used and the cartography and engraving are equal to Tanner, although the scale and map size are smaller. There are only two issues that we have seen, both dated 1826 on the title page, but with different dates on the maps. In the first issue, the maps are dated 1824-26, in the second issue (this copy) the maps are dated 1826-27. Finley continued to publish the maps as pocket maps until 1831 when he sold his map and atlas copyrights to Mitchell, who reissued this American Atlas only once, in 1831 (see our #3884) but continued to issue the pocket maps, with updates, until about 1850. Bound in half leather marbled paper covered boards with red leather label stamped with "Finley's American Atlas" in gilt. Full color.

Note First French edition (although some copies have 1808 on the title page). Stamp of Russian Imperial Library at Tsarkoe Selo. This atlas has the important "Carte Generale du Royaume de la Nouvelle Espagne" on two large folio sheets, originally drawn by Humboldt in 1803-4. Arrowsmith and Pike used this map as a base for their maps of Mexico and the southwest. Maps are without color and bound in full brown leather covered boards with "Voyage De Humboldt Et Bonplan. Atlas Geographique Et Physique Du Royaume De La Nouvelle-Espagne." stamped on the spine in black ink.

Bennett, Map and Print Sellers, No. 53, Fleet-Street. MDCCLXXVI.
List No 0346B
Note One of the most important atlases of the American Revolutionary War period. There are 22 maps on 29 sheets. The majority of the important large scale maps of the colonies are here, appearing together for the first time after having been issued as separates by Jefferys in the 1750's and 60's. This copy is the 1st 1776 edition, with the Quebec map, without the Lake Champlain map, as issued. This copy is the same as NMM 361, except the title page says 48 copper plates rather then the 49 on NMM 361, and on the NY/NJ map it is Major Holland rather than Capt. Holland (our NY/NJ map says Major-the 1775 says Capt-our index omits Holland-the reproduction atlas map copy says Major, and Carver is eliminated (why?), probably indicates that this was slightly before the NMM 361, as the 1775 title page is identical to this one (although we have not seen it yet-relying on P1165), except for the date. Summary of editions: 1775 (actually issued in 1776, has Evans Middle Colonies map, P1165), 1776 1st issue (our copy with 48 on TP, Quebec replaces Evans, N.Y- & N.J. is dated 1776, rather than 1775 and adds Pownall corrections and improvements), 1776 2nd issue (NMM 361, 49 on TP), 1777 (1776 on TP, N. Amer changes from Bowen/Gibson to Pownall version with 1777 on map, adds L. Champlain, P1166 -our reproduction copy), 1778 (P3659a, NMM 362, no changes from 1777), 1782 (P1169, no changes except Phillips says this copy has 1783 ed of N. Amer., inserted-later?) Our TP is a transition from 1775 to NMM361, NMM361 anticipates the Lake Champlain map in saying 49 plates. Covers are half leather brown cloth covered boards with "Jeffery's American Atlas. London MDCCLXXVI" stamped in gilt on the spine.

Note 1st edition. 5 large folding maps, 3 small maps. This, the first edition, was published during the war, and thus has the feeling of events unfolding with an uncertain outcome. The second edition was published in 1815 after the conclusion of the war, and has different text, and is more of a history. Henry Tanner engraved the five large maps that Melish drew, and J. Vallance engraved the three small maps. We believe this is the first book Melish published with the idea that it was an "Atlas."

Originally Issued in three parts starting in 1842 and ending in 1845 (although Woodward states that it cannot be determined how many parts were issued, our copy indicates three parts), This copy is the 1845 edition, which is a reissue of the 1842 - 1845 edition with some changes to the maps and the addition of color. Library of Congress copy (Phillips, 1228) and this copy have no Oregon map and no separate map of Iowa, as issued. When the atlas was issued in parts (Phillips, 1383) there was an Oregon map and an Iowa map listed. Note Exquisite hand drawn maps of the states. Notwithstanding the title, this is a geography book hand drawn by a very promising student. It includes descriptions of Astronomical Geography, the Ptolemaic, Brahean and Copernican Systems, Comets, Great Circles, Equator, Meridian, Horizon, Colures, Tropics, Polar Circles, Zones, Climates, Latitude and Longitude, a section titled America, and 19 maps of the states with a descriptive page for each. The maps are copied from the 1805 edition of Carey's American Pocket Atlas, except for Ohio, which is from Arrowsmith and Lewis' Atlas, 1812, and Indiana, from an unknown source. The text is copied from Morse's Geography Made Easy, probably 1807, 11th edition, but certainly before the 12th edition (which was changed substantially), the text describing the maps is original. The only mystery is why she used such out of date sources if, in fact, she made this book in 1823. The penmanship is remarkable both in the execution of the maps and text. One of a kind. At the bottom of the title page: "presented to her son T.A. Post - Feb 4th 1872." Emma Willard led the Middlebury Female Academy from 1807-9, see DAB.

Note First atlas of America printed in America. First edition. These maps were also published in Carey's American edition of Guthrie's Geography (1795) and most of the maps say "engraved for Carey's American edition of Guthrie's improved." The maps were again used for the 1796 edition of Carey's General Atlas, unchanged except for the Tennessee map, which is titled "Tennassee State" instead of "Tennassee Government" which is the title in both the American Atlas and the Guthrie Atlas - see Wheat and Brun, and has several counties delineated in the eastern part of the state which do not show in the 1795 edition of the map. NMM 480 (American Atlas) has "Tennassee State" indicating that Carey was not consistent. This atlas was the model for John Reid's American Atlas of 1796. This copy's maps have very strong impressions. Rebound quarter leather, marbled paper covered boards.

The eighteen maps and text comprise a general atlas of North America, with special emphasis on Texas and California. The Texas map shows in colored outline the lands granted to the Adelsverein and has the post road from Indianola to New Braunfels marked in red. The map of Oregon, California, Utah, New Mexico, etc. shows the gold regions in California and has an inset map of San Francisco Bay. There is also a striking separate map of San Francisco Bay titled "Bai San Francisco und Vereinigung des Sacramento mit dem San Joaquin." It has a lovely inset view of San Francisco and shows the routes by river to Sacramento and San Joaquin. Also issued under the title of "Kartenwerk zu dr. Karl Andree's Nord-Amerika," see P1231. Outline color. Bound in patterned paper covered boards with dark blue cloth spine with "Lange Atlas von Nord-amerika" stamped in gold.

Note The first great atlas of Mexico, produced by a Mexican and printed in Mexico. Sabin says only 300 copies were printed. The maps are of each province, with each surrounded by text. Phillips lists two later editions of 1886 with somewhat different titles. The only atlas of Mexico listed by Phillips that is earlier than this atlas is Humboldt's Atlas...de la Nouvelle Espagne of 1811. Has two very interesting plates at the end that relate to Aztec writing. Garcia Cubas was 26 when he published this. Strangely, then, the verso of the title page has 1846 as the copyright date (when the author was 14?). Maps hand col. with outline color. Atlas is bound in quarter leather brown marbled paper covered boards with title embossed in gold on the spine reading "Garcia y Cubas. Atlas geografico de la Republica Mexicana."

List No 4869B
Note This is the first edition (and perhaps the only edition). The title calls for ten maps, but there are actually 11 maps, one U.S. map and ten state maps. Each state map (actually, groups of states) is accompanied by an index sheet of places on the map. The state maps appear in the 1825 Universal atlas by Morse (see our #3812) where some of the maps are updated. Pasted on the cover is a slip with a lovely engraving of a globe with "Morse's new atlas of the United States on an improved plan..." on it. Scarce.
