Full Title (Title Page to) Photo-auto maps. (New York to Albany and Saratoga Springs, Saratoga Springs to Albany and New York). Photographs of every turn, together with a topographical outline of road showing railroad crossings, bridges, school houses and all landmarks, with accurate distances between. Compiled by Gardner S. List No 0268B
Note Rand McNally is not listed on the title page. A very unusual presentation of nine index maps showing the route from New York to Albany and Saratoga Springs and return, with photographs showing with printed arrows each turn to make in the road. Eventually, route signs were posted for automobiles, but before that occurred, this book filled a need. The preface shows seven "Divisions" of maps published, including Chicago, Detroit, Toledo, Cleveland, Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse, and New York City. The photographs are wonderful and give a real feeling of the environment people traveled through in the first years of the automobile. Buisseret calls the presentation "ingenious" though he notes that not many journeys occurred at night, when these photos would not be very useful. Bound with dark brown leather covers. In gold on the front cover: The Rand McNally Photo=Auto Maps and Guide Book. New York to Albany and Saratoga Springs. Saratoga Springs to Albany and New York. Includes many advertisements for automobiles, hotels and automotive products (not scanned)

Note U.S. Map by Drake/Hazard shows many new railroads compared to the 1856 edition. The Mitchell/Young U.S. map adds Dakota, Arizona, and many new railroad routes. This was the last year of Desilver publishing Mitchell's guide (although Buck claims to have seen an 1864 (?) issue). Enlarged catalogue of Desilver publications (which mention no map or atlas publications, indicating that Desilver was phasing out the map business, just as Mitchell's son was starting the New General Atlas edition). Bound into blue cloth covers with "Mitchell's New Traveller's Guide Through The United States" and a beautiful illustration stamped in gilt (which is changed from the 1856 edition). Outline color in both maps.

Philadelphia 1849 Published by Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co. Entered ... 1848, by Thomas, Cowperthwait, & Co. ... Pennsylvania. (with 5 inset maps).
List No 2766.002
Note This is a major revision of the guide with an entirely new map by Ira S. Drake (about whom we find nothing) with five inset maps entitled - "Vicinity Of Niagara Falls", "Map Of The Copper Mine Region", "Map of the Gold and Quicksilver district of California", "Map of the Maritime and Overland Routes to California", and "Map Of New England Or Eastern States". The map emphasis on the California gold rush is clear, although the 128 pages of expanded text do not yet list routes to the gold fields, while they do add routes west from St. Louis and Independence. The main map is larger than the earlier Mitchell/Young maps, but shows roughly the same area on a somewhat larger scale. An "Advertisement" (actually a preface) dated Nov. 1, 1848, states: "The following work is similar in design to 'Mitchell's Traveller's Guide,' first published about twelve years ago, and which has been so extremely patronized, that it may be safely asserted no book of the kind ever printed in this country has met with so wide a circulation." Covers are black stamped leather with "Mitchell's New Traveller's Guide Through The United States" and a beautiful illustration of a steam boat and train stamped in gilt. Map is outline color. Catalogue of Thomas, Cowperthwait School Books included in the text.

List No 2869.002
Note 1st edition. This guide is scarcer than Mitchell's Traveller's Guide. The outline color map is very similar to the Traveller's Guide Map - it is probably from the same plate, but covers slightly more area, has eight inset maps (the Traveller's map drops the Hartford /New Haven inset and adds two - Niagara Falls and New Orleans) instead of nine, and has a table of distances below the title. The 84 page text in this guide is a descriptive listing of Canals, Railroads, etc., the Traveller's Guide text functions as a route book and was certainly more generally useful and had many more editions. There was only one other edition of this Compendium, in 1838 (see our #521). The map was issued separately in 1839 (see our #4950) and a printing on silk was issued in 1835 (see our #4544). Book is bound into black leather covers with "Mitchell's Compendium Of Canals & Railroads" and a decorative border stamped in gilt. Four page catalogue of Mitchell's maps.

Note 1st edition. The map is titled "A New Map of the United States Upon Which Are Delineated Its Vast Works Of Internal Communication, Routes Across The Continent &c Showing Also Canada and the Island of Cuba." This is the second edition of the map. The inset map of the west gives sources - Fremont, etc. Map copyright 1851. This map also appears in Lippincott's New and Complete Gazette15er of the United States in 1854 with the map dated 1853 and showing several changes from this 1852 edition, viz. Washington Territory is formed and Nebraska is shown. The text lists a large number of routes, including several to California and Oregon. Williams later did many of the maps for Mitchell's General Atlas of 1860, and this large map has the same "look." The map and the guide are much scarcer than the map and Gazetteer. St. Boston.
List No 3207.002
Note 1st edition of guide. Includes two maps. In the introduction of the 26 page guide book, Boardman states that the large White Mountain map was issued "previously" which one assumes was the prior year, since Phillips lists 1858 as the first edition of the map. Some 1858 (see our #5228) and later issues of the map look the same and bear the same date of 1858, but are lithographic transfers done by J.H. Bufford who also did the first edition of the Railroad map (see our 1864 edition of the large map). The quality of the later lithographic issues is not up to the quality of the first engraved or lithographed issues. Phillips lists an 1871 revised edition by H.S. Fifield and lithographed by Bufford. Boardman also states that he drew the map from his own surveys of the area. Several vignettes of local buildings and scenes surround the mountain ranges. Both maps are in black and white, and folded into stamped red cloth covers with "Boardman's White Mountain Guide" in gilt. Relief shown by hachures.
