Note
U.S. Map by Drake/Hazard shows many new railroads compared to the 1856 edition. The Mitchell/Young U.S. map adds Dakota, Arizona, and many new railroad routes. This was the last year of Desilver publishing Mitchell's guide (although Buck claims to have seen an 1864 (?) issue). Enlarged catalogue of Desilver publications (which mention no map or atlas publications, indicating that Desilver was phasing out the map business, just as Mitchell's son was starting the New General Atlas edition). Bound into blue cloth covers with "Mitchell's New Traveller's Guide Through The United States" and a beautiful illustration stamped in gilt (which is changed from the 1856 edition). Outline color in both maps.

Note
This is a major revision of the guide with an entirely new map by Ira S. Drake (about whom we find nothing) with five inset maps entitled - "Vicinity Of Niagara Falls", "Map Of The Copper Mine Region", "Map of the Gold and Quicksilver district of California", "Map of the Maritime and Overland Routes to California", and "Map Of New England Or Eastern States". The map emphasis on the California gold rush is clear, although the 128 pages of expanded text do not yet list routes to the gold fields, while they do add routes west from St. Louis and Independence. The main map is larger than the earlier Mitchell/Young maps, but shows roughly the same area on a somewhat larger scale. An "Advertisement" (actually a preface) dated Nov. 1, 1848, states: "The following work is similar in design to 'Mitchell's Traveller's Guide,' first published about twelve years ago, and which has been so extremely patronized, that it may be safely asserted no book of the kind ever printed in this country has met with so wide a circulation." Covers are black stamped leather with "Mitchell's New Traveller's Guide Through The United States" and a beautiful illustration of a steam boat and train stamped in gilt. Map is outline color. Catalogue of Thomas, Cowperthwait School Books included in the text.

Note
1st edition. This guide is scarcer than Mitchell's Traveller's Guide. The outline color map is very similar to the Traveller's Guide Map - it is probably from the same plate, but covers slightly more area, has eight inset maps (the Traveller's map drops the Hartford /New Haven inset and adds two - Niagara Falls and New Orleans) instead of nine, and has a table of distances below the title. The 84 page text in this guide is a descriptive listing of Canals, Railroads, etc.; the Traveller's Guide text functions as a route book and was certainly more generally useful and had many more editions. There was only one other edition of this Compendium, in 1838 (see our #521). The map was issued separately in 1839 (see our #4950) and a printing on silk was issued in 1835 (see our #4544). Book is bound into black leather covers with "Mitchell's Compendium Of Canals & Railroads" and a decorative border stamped in gilt. Four page catalogue of Mitchell's maps.

1st edition. The map is titled "A New Map of the United States Upon Which Are Delineated Its Vast Works Of Internal Communication, Routes Across The Continent &c Showing Also Canada and the Island of Cuba." This is the second edition of the map. The inset map of the west gives sources - Fremont, etc. Map copyright 1851. This map also appears in Lippincott's New and Complete Gazette15er of the United States in 1854 with the map dated 1853 and showing several changes from this 1852 edition, viz. Washington Territory is formed and Nebraska is shown. The text lists a large number of routes, including several to California and Oregon. Williams later did many of the maps for Mitchell's General Atlas of 1860, and this large map has the same "look." The map and the guide are much scarcer than the map and Gazetteer. Book bound in full leather 14.5x9, with title in gilt on front.

Note
1st edition of guide. Includes two maps. In the introduction of the 26 page guide book, Boardman states that the large White Mountain map was issued "previously" which one assumes was the prior year, since Phillips lists 1858 as the first edition of the map. Some 1858 (see our #5228) and later issues of the map look the same and bear the same date of 1858, but are lithographic transfers done by J.H. Bufford who also did the first edition of the Railroad map (see our 1864 edition of the large map). The quality of the later lithographic issues is not up to the quality of the first engraved or lithographed issues. Phillips lists an 1871 revised edition by H.S. Fifield and lithographed by Bufford. Boardman also states that he drew the map from his own surveys of the area. Several vignettes of local buildings and scenes surround the mountain ranges. Both maps are in black and white, and folded into stamped red cloth covers with "Boardman's White Mountain Guide" in gilt. Relief shown by hachures.

The catalogue of Thomas, Cowperthwait is enlarged from the 1850 edition, with an excellent description of the Mitchell New Universal Atlas: "The results of the latest geographical and nautical discoveries are to be found on the Maps, including those of the most recent date by Wilkes, Nicollet, and Fremont." Outline color. Bound in black stamped leather covers with "Mitchell's New Traveller's Guide Through The United States" and a beautiful illustration of a steam boat and train stamped in gilt.

Guide Book, 124 p., includes: Index to Rail Roads and Index to General Routes. The contents calls for only one map but a second new map is added of the entire U.S., from the Mitchell Universal Atlas plate. The Drake1856 map adds J.L. Hazzard to the title and compared to the 1855 issue shows several new proposed railroads, particularly in the area west of the Missouri River (possibly the proposed Pacific Railroad routes). The Mitchell/Young U.S. map is slightly different from the same map in the 1856 Universal Atlas, in its showing of the Pacific Railroad routes. Bound in dark green leather covers with "Mitchell's New Traveler's Guide Through The United States" and a beautiful illustration stamped in gilt. The two insets in the first map are titled "Gold Region Of California" and "District Of Columbia". Both maps in outline color. Prime meridians are in Washington D.C. and Greenwich.

Many map changes from the 1835 edition - "Texas" is labeled for the first time, Wisconsin Territory appears, the town of Westport is now the western end of the road in Missouri, along with many towns and roads added generally in the western parts of the map (these are actually the first changes in the map since the first edition in 1832). Map has been backed on heavy paper and is unfolded - originally it was folded behind the text. Outline color. Note
A rare guide that precedes the author's "The American Traveler" by three years (see our #2943). With a large folding map of the United States engraved by J.D. Stout; the same map appears in Picket's "Geographical Grammar" of 1817 (see our copy). This is a somewhat crude version of the more polished guide of 1825. It begins with a short general discussion of geographical principals and then lists the major roads and routes in the U.S. There is also a large fold out chart "General View of The World" which describes the topographical features of the continents. In the "Concluding Remarks" the author states "It is a long time since I had it in view to publish a little thing of this kind...but a roving destiny has since that time carried me to the banks of the St. Lawrence, and the plains of Georgia...In the next Edition corrections and enlargements will be made...so as to render it, if possible, worthy of the attention of this, our Nation of Travellers." Covers are plain gray blue paper 17.5x11 with orange binding.

There is an extra map of Pennsylvania tipped in that is the Anthony Finley 1834 double page atlas map of Pennsylvania, but with Tanner's name as publisher and printed on thin folding paper. Included are four small maps of Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York and Boston. With a catalogue of Tanner's works. This edition has the same cover as the "Western Tourist and Emigrant's Guide..." but the title page is different, and the contents are basically the same - Colton issued the two books with different title pages but the same contents and maps - an interesting marketing device. The map adds Minnesota, Nebraska and Kansas to the title and is enlarged and extended west to include the settled eastern counties of Nebraska and Kansas and a portion of Dakota. Fisher's name is added to the title page for the first time, as compiler, something he probably was doing since the Colton editions of the early 1850's. The text is expanded to include Nebraska and Kansas. With map in full color, 49x71, entitled, "Guide Through Ohio, Michigan Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska & Kansas, Showing The Township lines of the United States Surveys ... A scarce descriptive guide to Mexico issued on the eve of the Mexican War. Not listed in any references. On the brown leather cover is gilt stamped "Mexico and Yucatan." The small full color map is, according to the publisher's statement, based on the SDUK map of Mexico. The map has an interesting note: "The road represented on the map from Matamoras to Mexico, is the one which Gen. Taylor will most probably take, should he be directed to march on the capital." The note goes on to say that Upper California has been omitted from the map because it is "improbable that the region in question will ever again be attached to Mexico." Note
The Handbook contains the usual information for potential settlers. The map is primarily of Minnesota although a small portion of eastern Dakota is shown. Perhaps the most interesting part of this little piece is the last page of text titled "Map Making," which includes the following observations: "The manufacture of maps in Chicago is stimulated by their great demand from the growing country around. Here local pride and public spirit constantly call for new maps to show varied and accumulating improvements which are rapidly progressing. These are readily bought to displace the old ones, which, owing to the rapid development of the country, are sometimes obsolete before they are soiled by office dust. Constant vigilance is required to keep pace with the cropping out of new towns and railroads where the Anglo-Saxon sets his foot, which seem to spring up as if from spores left in his tracks." Map is full color. The book is bound into stamped dark brown cloth covers 15.5x11 with "Hand Book Of Minnesota With a Map" stamped in gilt.
