Note
Seventeenth century atlas of the World by Nicholas Visscher. With Engraved allegorical title page, on sheet 51x31, printed in full color, followed by letterpress half title page. Consists of 127 engraved maps, hand-colored in outline and full, with elegant title cartouche. Visscher is well-known for the depth of accuracy within his maps, and for embellishing the maps' beauty further with small detailing. This work is known for the high quality of engraving, exceptionally fine ornament, and accurate geographical information. His true innovation lies in his rendering of the New World, where he added small variations to the still widely unknown North American coastlines. About 1690 Visscher retouched the old plate of N.J. Visscher, by adding the city of Philadelphia and the name of the state Pennsylvania. Majority of the maps are published by Visscher with additional maps by several other mapmakers. The Atlas Minor is a fine and comprehensive composite atlas, and one of a series of large atlases compiled and sold by the Visscher family of art dealers and cartographers in the 17th century.

Note
Early manuscript star chart integrating Korean, Chinese, and western astronomical science, with title on verso, on sheet 85x81. Date estimated. Originally engraved in a stone stele. Showing rank and distribution of Stars, illustrates the traditional Chinese zodiacal system, following the Cheonsang Yeolcha Bunyajido, a fourteenth -centuray Korean star map, but also incorporating western zodiacal astrology, and Qian Lezhi's c. 440 AD Chinese celestial globe illustrating the work of the ancient Chinese astronomers Shi Shen, Gan De, and Wu Xian. Following Qian Lezhi's c. system the constellations of the three great astronomers are distinguished. Constellations appearing in black reference Gan De, constellations in red reference Shi Shen, open circles reference Wu Xia. Two larger intersecting circles surround the center, represent the ecliptic and Equator. The chart is further divided into numerous xiu, surrounding a central nexus. The nexus, represented by a circle at the center of the map, represents Earthly life. The other constellations are divided into zones typically referred to as xiu or mansions. In traditional Chinese celestial cartography there are 28 unequal mansions, presumably associated with lunar movements. This chart, for no clear reason, consolidates several of the smaller mansions into larger entities, leaving only 24. This chart also illustrates the Milky Way, a feature uncommon to Chinese charts, but not atypical on Korean charts from the 14th century onwards, when it first appeared on the Cheonsang Yeolcha Bunyajido. Around the outside of the map the constellations of the western Zodiac, and the seasons, are named. An exceptionally rare and important discovery.

From J.F. Letenneur: "Exceptional onboard document of this rare and fabulous maritime atlas, a masterpiece by the greatest French hydrographer of the 18th century, with maps of all the coastlines known at the time. Bound with the coat of arms of the King of France, the atlas was taken by the English aboard the frigate la Nymphe, off the coasts of Ushant August 10, 1780, during one of the naval battles of the American War of Independence which took place on European waters. In the context of the war at the end of the 18th century, and of the rivalry between the French and British Navy, maritime atlases, were strategic tools, and this “Hydrographie Françoise” more so than any other, because its purpose was to provide the best maritime charts for the French ships that were fighting on the American side against the British. (The handwritten captions throughout most of the atlas are prices for individual maps and all include the same mention: “for sailors”). These atlases were not the kind to be kept in a library, but precious tools, based on the observations of the travelers and continuously improved upon, as reflect in the present copy. It was bound with the engraved title page of the edition of 1737-1765, but the index includes maps printed after 1765 (until 1772), and the copy was augmented by six maps that do not appear in the index (until 1776), as well as 14 pages of text from the Versailles edition of 1773. The later maps are signed by Verdun de la Crenne and were done during the campaigns of the Flore (1771-1772) and of the Isis led by Fleurieu in 1768-1769. The captions explain that the maps were created using the latest technology of the day that could measure longitude (maritime clocks)." (Continued in the Pub Note field).
