Pictorial view of the world. Originally issued uncolored, color was added later. Map is projected as a view from space and details the world roughly from the Equator to the North Pole and from California to India. Flora, fauna, historic events, cultural artifacts, and indigenous people are represented pictorially. The Sargasso Sea is illustrated in the middle of the Atlantic. Includes inset views illustrate places and moments of special interest including mirages in the Pacific, a ship burning at sea, Niagara Falls, Chicago, oil wells, gold mining, Hindu cremation, Chinese Junks, Tuareg warriors, an avalanche, etc. also includes lists of the nations and maritime flags. Shows sketches of some 79 individuals in 'traditional costumes'. To either side of the main view are flags of major nations, sailing ships, volcanoes, and other imagery. Include an ice free polar sea north of Greenland labeled 'Mer Libre?' No doubt this is a nod to hopes that a Northwest Passage might still exist. Union Pacific and Trans-Atlantic shipping lanes are noted. The achievements of various explorers are noted in both Africa and the Arctic.

This map extends one degree further south than the original map, and for some reason the western sheet does not have the mountains drawn in although the water courses are clearly shown. Unfolded, separately issued on thin paper. Relief shown by hachures.

Note
The date is estimated from a similar, smaller map, also printed by Traubel, which is part of a report on the Harbor of Duluth issued in 1876 (see our 3394). A huge area encompassing the Western States and Canada is shaded in pale yellow indicating the "Area Tributary To The Harbor Of Duluth Over 2,000,000 Of Square Miles." This larger map is clearly a separate, unfolded issue on thin paper. It promotes Duluth as the trade center of a vast area of the northwestern U.S. and southwestern Canada ("2,000,000 of Square miles"). It is quite a wonderful map, full of interesting information on climate, mining, railroads, canals, railroads, land grants - all with the unlikely slant of emphasizing Duluth. Karrow lists several related Duluth maps by Traubel (Karrow 7-0191, 7-0193, 7-0198, 7-0793). Full color by state.

Note
This is the colored edition of same map that appears in the 1876 Annual Report of the General Land Office (see our #4591). The GLO issued colored versions of the eighteen 1876 Annual Report maps in the very scarce "Geographical and Political Atlas of the States and Territories of the United States...," where, we presume, they were folded. This copy is not folded and thus was probably issued as a separate, not noted by Kelsay in her Dakota list. Compared to the black and white issue, this colored version is far more readable, especially regarding the Indian Reservations, the Military Reservations, and the railroad grants. Relief shown by hachures.
