Note
Engraved map in Russian of Northern California and Mexico, Baja California. Shows international and administrative boundaries, cities, towns, rivers and mountains. Relief shown by hachures. Date is estimated based on showing of Pyramid Lake from the Fremont 1845 map. The map appears to have been published in Russia as a separate map, not in any reports we can locate. It shows the Russian settlement at Fort Ross on the California coast. It might have been a map advocating for increased Russian exploration and settlement in California. There is no mention of the gold rush on the map, thus it is likely to have been published before 1849. We have not been able to located any other copies at libraries.

Note
This is probably the prepublication manuscript drawing for the final printed version of this map that was issued in the same year - see our 4218.000. It is twice the size and scale of the final printed version, and is beautifully hand drawn and colored. It is amazing that a map this large has survived outside of an institutional library for so long. Apparently it was kept in a family for several generations. It was leant to us by its current owner so that we could scan it and put it online. From our notes to the printed version: Greatly detailed strip map over twenty feet long showing the surveyed routes of the New York and New Haven Railroad. The line was opened in 1849. The map is unique for a railroad map in its huge size, large scale, elegance of drawing, and variety of information shown (houses, trails, rivers, turnpikes, lighthouses, harbors, hills, swamps, etc.).

In color. Date estimated. Bauerkeller embossed this map to give a 3D effect for the buildings and some elevated features (city walls, etc.). This feature seems to be unique to Bauerkeller's maps, although he was copied in one map in our collection, the map of Cassel by Caesar (see our 12215.000). Bauerkeller also used very bright (and to our eyes very modern) printed colors to show the different districts and areas.

Note
Very unusual obscure map by Manning. Samuel Manning was the brother in law of Lewis Robinson, and set up a map publishing business with him and his brother Levi Manning in Akron, Ohio, in 1836. By 1845 it appears that Samuel Manning was issuing his own maps, including this title. Outline hand color map by county. Printed on thin paper. Showing Portage, Geauga, Cuyahoga, Medina, Wayne and Stark counties, township boundaries, major towns, stage roads, watersheds. Also shows distances from Cuyahoga Falls to major towns.
