Note
This is the most ambitious Coloney & Fairchild strip or ribbon map: it shows the Mississippi River from its delta to its source at Lake Itaska, a distance of 2600 miles. It is backed on linen and rolls into paper covered spool with a hand crank. This is the revised edition, with much additional material added on river towns by William Bowen, President of the Pilot's Association of St. Louis (this information comes from the promotion for this map printed on the Ribbon Map of New York City). No record of the first issue found, although a copy exists at the Minnesota Historical Society. The river is colored blue against a black and white background. Distances from New Orleans are printed on the river at intervals to the source. Karrow's listing is for a variant: the map printed in five strips on one sheet and folded into the 1866 edition of Edward's Gazetteer of the Mississippi River. Scarce.

The rivers have been necessarily straightened to indicate the lengths of the rivers. The compass orientation of the flowing stream is indicated by small north-pointing arrows periodically drawn adjacent to the stream. Includes table of the Length of Rivers in British Miles. A textual description of the rivers accompanies the illustration; it describes the course of the Missouri River, "recently explored by the Americans" (Lewis and Clark), as being "extremely devious". Beautiful color.

Note
Uncolored map of Paraguay prepared by Ernest Amedee Barthelemy Mouchez, a French naval officer who became director of the Paris Observatory and launched the ill-fated Carte du Ciel project in 1887. Capt. Mouchez undertook a voyage of 900 miles aboard his steamship "Le Bisson", traversing the rivers Parana, Uruguay and Paraguay up to Asuncion, Paraguay, making observations from 1857 to 1859. The map published by the French "Depot des cartes et plans de la Marine", contains the results of Mouchez's 3 years of expeditions up the Parana and Paraguay River and compilation of the best available cartographic information. Mouchez improved the practice of surveying at sea, adapting terrestrial instruments for naval use, and was especially concerned with the problems of determining longitude. He developed the use of the theodolite and meridian telescope. "No. 1962" is on lower right margin of map. Shows political boundaries, major cities, rivers, military posts, etc. Includes statistical table. Relief shown by hachures.

Note
This map is the earliest accurate mapping of the region of the Northern Plains and Upper Mississippi River. Lithographed by C. B. Graham. Extends from St. Louis north to the Canadian Border, and west along the Missouri River. Printed on two sheets, joined. The map is based upon a series of systematic instrument surveys conducted by Nicollet, assisted by Lt. John Charles Fremont, of the Army Corps of Topographical Engineer. His map was years ahead of its time, with its regional concept and sound basis in instrument readings and astronomically determined points. Had he lived longer, Nicollet would undoubtedly have become the official government cartographer of the whole trans-Mississippi West. This copy is the House of Reprentatives issue. See our 2488.000 for the Senate issued, which appears identical except for the lithographer.
