Tooley referred to the map as "Perhaps the most attractive and certainly the most definite representation of California as an island. California is the centre and 'raison de'etre' of the map." One of a few maps to focus exclusively on California as an island, first published in Goos' De Zee Atlas ofte Water-Weereld. "With the similar Joannes van Loon chart of the same year, this is one of the most desirable of all California as an island maps. The successive British Commanders in Chief in America Generals Sir William Howe, Sir Henry Clinton, and Sir Guy Carleton during their respective occupations of New York and Environs in the Revolution caused this manuscript plan from time to time to be kept up. The plan extends from below Guanas Bay to the Heights of Spikendevi, a distance of about eighteen or nineteen miles. It shows the Fortifications, Defenses, Topography, Streets, Roads, etc. of the whole of the Island of New York with the Harbor Islands, Water Ways, and River Frontages on the Hudson and East Rivers, the Military Works on Long Island including Brooklyn, the Works in Paulus Hook and parts of the Jersey Shore. It has a copious Table of References to various works British and American, some of them with notes as to the time of their construction or destruction. The Original Drawing, ten feet by four feet, is on a scale of about six and a half inches to a mile. It is handsomely reproduced for subscribers only in careful facsimile on 24 sheets which can be joined up and mounted like the original as a Wall Map or mounted on linen if desired. It will be issued either mounted on linen to fold in book form with leather slip case 13 x 10 inches or the 24 sheets 22 x 15 inches, each will be supplied in a portfolio. No more than 100 copies are being printed and the engravings are erased as each sheet is printed off. Note	Engraved and printed by Bosqui Eng. & Print Co., San Francisco, 1885. First edition, first issue. Large folding map on two sheets, joined. Printed in colors. In 1885, at the height of the anti-Chinese hysteria in California, the official Report of the Special Committee of the Board of Supervisors was issued, reporting on the "Condition of the Chinese Quarter and the Chinese in San Francisco." This inflammatory report included the rare folding color map of Chinatown, but in the usual "small-scale" version (approx. 8½x19½ inches). This map was also issued in the San Francisco Municipal Report of 1884-85, and in Farwell's The Chinese at Home and Abroad (see our 5807.000). However, this first issue of this map was printed in a supersized version by San Francisco's first "fine press printer," Edward Bosqui. It was most likely printed for the use of key city officials. The map shows San Francisco's Chinatown, bordered by California, Stockton, Broadway, and Kearney Streets. It is color-coded to show every business, gambling parlor, houses of white and Chinese prostitution, opium "Resorts," joss houses, etc. It was printed on a scale of 40 feet to the inch. The differences in this large-scale copy and the smaller version are the list of Supervisors imprinted thereon, different type fonts for streets, etc, one mistakenly identified house of white prostitution (corrected in the smaller version as a house of Chinese prostitution, and the Bosqui imprint. This large-scale version is exceedingly rare. Only a handful of copies are known, most in institutional libraries.

Note	Important early color map of Panama, backed with linen and varnished. Relief shown by hachures. Includes inset map and note. Prime meridian is Bogota. One of the earliest printed maps of Panama based upon indigenous surveys. Published during the period when it was still one of the states of Colombia. Manuel María Paz Delgado (1820-1902) was a officer in the Colombia army, mapmaker and artist. Between 1853 and 1858, Maria Paz worked with Cordazzi, perhaps the most famous map maker of the northern part of South America after its independence from Spain. With Codazzi's death, Maria Paz and Manuel Ponce de Leon were given control of the project's completion and publication of the surveying and mapping work The work resulted in the the publication of the atlas of the United States of Colombia in 1865, the first indigenous atlas of Colombia. Panama first asserted its independence in 1841. In November 1840, the isthmus under the leadership General Tomás Herrera, who assumed the title of Superior Civil Chief, declared its independence. The State of Panama took the name of 'Estado Libre del Istmo', or the Free State of the Isthmus in March 1841. By the time the civil conflict ended and the government of New Granada and the government of the Isthmus had negotiated the Isthmus's reincorporation to the union, Panama's First Republic had been free for 13 months. Reunification happened on December 31, 1841.

Shows roads, routes, rivers, etc. Includes a note titled "authorities" that is a list of prior surveys and explorations that the map is derived from. Wheat notes that this map was "compiled principally for the use of the Department of Oregon. It shows Washington Territory curving around the state of Oregon and taking in all of Idaho, although a political border is not shown. A number of "authorities" are stated in a note, and except for the unexplored portions this seems to be about the best map of Oregon, Washington and Idaho country that could have been made prior to the Civil War. It is an excellent map." This map was part of a series of maps put out by the U.S. Topographical Engineers in 1858 and 1859 - see Wheat 960 "Map of Utah Territory" 1858 and Wheat 967 "Territory and Military Department of New Mexico 1859.

Note	Third edition. A colorful rendering of comparative mountain heights worldwide, although separated into the Western and Eastern Hemispheres. Other aspects of the illustration (with the exception of showing volcanoes) appear to be fanciful. Substantially more taller mountains than an earlier edition (see our although dates uncertain because the date of 1816 is the same. The peaks are listed, each with a unique number which can be matched up with the numbers at the top and bottom of the illustration. By making a line between the numbers, the corresponding peak is intersected. Latitudes, sources, and altitudes also listed.

Note	"This exceptionally detailed map of the Holy Land not only gives information on the area's Biblical past - the naming of the 12 tribes of Israel, and the location of important sites but also the contemporary make-up of the area with the demarcation of the Pashalics of Acre, Tripoli, Aleppo, and Damascus.The title of the map was probably taken from Maundrell's 'A Journey from Aleppo to Jerusalem…'. The work was first published in 1703 and would continue to be a hugely popular book well into the nineteenth century. In fact Arrowsmith quotes him: 'Jacob's Well. It is dug in a firm Rock about 3 yards in diameter and 35 in depth, 5 of which we found full of water'. Arrowsmith also draws upon the writings of M. Seetzen whose travels were published in 1809. The most famous passage tells of his journey around the 'Dead Sea', which he under-took alone and dressed as a beggar." (Lyon and Turnbull)

Note	"Large and detailed map of Japan and the northeast coast of Asia.This map is a fine example of Arrowsmith's relentless updating of his maps. First issued in 1811, the map shows the tracks of some of the most important naval expeditions of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century, which charted the waters around Japan, Korea, North East China, and Russia's Pacific coast. These include those made by La Perouse (1787), HMS 'Hindostan' which carried Lord George Macartney on his embassy to China, Broughton in HMS 'Providence' (1797), and the "track of the Russian's in 1805" - Admiral Krusenstern, who led the first Russian circumnavigation. For this 1818 edition Arrowsmith has also added the the track of HMS 'Alceste', and HC Ship 'Discovery' which, made several voyages around the Yellow Sea in 1816. Arrowsmith most probably drew upon the surgeon aboard the 'Alceste', John McCloed, and his book 'A narrative of a Voyage to the Yellow Sea' (1818), for the most up-to-date information." Note	Color pictorial map of Alaska, published the year Alaska officially became the 49th state of the United States of America. Showing rivers, straits, sounds, towns, mountain ranges (drawn in aerial perspective), glaciers (shaded white), and existing and proposed highways. The map is richly illustrated with naturalistic depictions of wildlife, agricultural products, historical landmarks, oil fields and fisheries. Along the left and right sides, six circular illustrations highlight important events in Alaskan history beginning with Vitus Bering's 1741 explorations and ending with Alaska statehood in 1959. A compass rose over the Gulf of Alaska incorporates the American and Alaskan flags. Includes a section of the Canadian provinces of British Columbia, Yukon and the Northwest Territories to the east, which are depicted in less detail and dominated by a large illustration of a Native American totem pole. The map border is rendered in a geometric beadwork design, inspired by artwork of indigenous Northwest Coast tribes.

Note	This is probably the prepublication manuscript drawing for the final printed version of this map that was issued in the same year - see our 4218.000. It is twice the size and scale of the final printed version, and is beautifully hand drawn and colored. It is amazing that a map this large has survived outside of an institutional library for so long. Apparently it was kept in a family for several generations. It was leant to us by its current owner so that we could scan it and put it online. From our notes to the printed version: Greatly detailed strip map over twenty feet long showing the surveyed routes of the New York and New Haven Railroad. The line was opened in 1849. The map is unique for a railroad map in its huge size, large scale, elegance of drawing, and variety of information shown (houses, trails, rivers, turnpikes, lighthouses, harbors, hills, swamps, etc.).

Note	The upper and lower four sheets joined as one. With title cartouche scene by J. Webber. Map is on four sheets, joined as two. "This large and detailed map shows the political make-up of North Italy and central Europe at the beginning of the nineteenth century. It most notably marks the newly formed Italian Republic (the vassal state of the French Republic), which would in 1805 become the Kingdom of Italy. The map also depicts Swiss cantons - which were in the process of being reorganized under the guidance of Napoleon." (Lyon and Turnbull). The title cartouche is constructed from a beautiful view of the village of Chamouny (Chamonix) by J. Webber, 1787.

Note	"Large map of Sri Lanka detailing British and Kandyan possessions at the end of the first Kandyan War.The British, fearing that French control of the Netherlands would result in their controlling the strategically important port of Trincolmanee, occupied Dutch possessions in Sri Lanka in 1795. Initially the British encountered little resistance to their occupation and they soon controlled most of the Dutch territory, which covered the whole of the low-lying Sri Lankan coast. British possession would later be enshrined at the Treaty of Amiens of 1802.The interior of the island was controlled by the Kingdom of Kandy, which had lived in uneasy and sometimes violent peace with the previous colonial incumbents the Dutch and the Portuguese before them - for the past 200 years. This uneasiness continued and, in 1803, the first Kandyan War broke out when the British marched into Kandyan territory. Although they successfully occupied the capital Senkadagala (Kandy), resistance was stronger than expected and the army, weakened by disease, was resoundingly defeated. The war would continue for another two years with neither side gaining the decisive victory, and it would not be until 1815 - when the British were invited in to overthrow the Sri Vikrama Rajasingha - that they would gain control of central Sri Lanka. Rare. We are only able to trace two institutional examples of the map: those of the Bodleian and the British Library." (Lyon and Turnbull)

Note	"Rare map of Rio Plata and the northern regions, produced during the British Invasion of the Rio de la Plata. The invasion was an attempt by the British to open a new theatre against the Spanish and French alliance by attacking Spanish interests in South America. To this end, a force was sent to gain control of the River Plate by conquering the dominant city of Buenos Aires. On June 27, 1806, a British force of some 1,500 men under the command of Colonel William Carr Beresford occupied the city. They held control for about six weeks, before surrendering on the 14th August to a militia consisting of 550 veterans and 400 soldiers, led by Santiago de Liniers y Bremond, a French nobleman and mercenary in the service of Spain. A second, better-resourced, invasion followed in 1807, when a force of 10,000 men under the command of Lieutenant-General John Whitelock, attacked Buenos Aires on the 1st July. The British were, however, ill-prepared for urban combat and the locals eventually overwhelmed them. The Britsh had lost substantial numbers, and General Whitelock signed an armistice with de Liniers on the 12th August and left for home. These two resounding victories, which were achieved with little help from her colonial master Spain, have led many to site them as important mile stones along the road to Argentine Independence." Note	"Large and detailed map of Egypt published just after the failed Alexandrian Expedition, a major operation during the Anglo-Turkish War of 1807-1809. The map of Upper Egypt details the journey of Eyles Irwin through Egypt in 1777. Irwin was an East India Company official who set sail from India in 1777, bound for England. Unfortunately, his ship was captured by pirates. The ship was diverted to the port of Cosire, a detail of which is shown on the map, from whence they were forced to cross the dessert to Kenne (Qena), from there to Suez via Cairo, eventually arriving at Alexandria. From there he gained safe passage to England. The whole adventure took eleven months and was set down by Irwin in his work, 'A Series of Adventures in the Course of a Voyage up the Red-Sea', published in 1780." (Lyon and Turnbull). Detailed notes describe the condition of canals, roads, and navigation of the Nile River.

Note	"Arrowsmith published the map at around the time that British sovereignty over the Cape Colony was recognized at the Congress of Vienna. The British had been in control of the colony since 1795, when they took over from the Dutch to prevent it from falling into the hands of Napoleonic France, it was briefly relinquished to the Dutch in 1803, before the British regained control in 1806 The map is based, not surprisingly, upon contemporary Dutch material. Although the British had been in control for the previous 20 years, there had been little interest taken in the colony, beyond its use as an important strategic port from which to base operations during the Napoleonic wars. Wholly British maps of the Cape and South Africa would not be published for another 19 years, most notably by Aaron's son Samuel, with his 'Map of the Cape of Good Hope' in 1834 and S.D.U.K.'s map of South Africa in the same year." Note	"Large and detailed maps of Egypt published just after the failed Alexandrian Expedition, a major operation during the Anglo-Turkish War of 1807-1809. By 1806, Britain had become increasingly fearful of France's growing influence in Constantinople. After the failure of the Dardanelles Operation in September of that year, the British sent a naval force, under the command of Alexander Mackenzie-Fraser, to secure Alexandria as a base from which to conduct their operations against the Ottomans and French. Although initially met with little resistance, the British were hampered by supply issues and, later on, by stiff Egyptian counteraction. By the end of September they were forced to leave Alexandria having failed in their mission. A great deal of the geographical information for the map of Lower Egypt came from Sir Alexander Bryce of the Royal Engineers (d.1832), who had served under Sir Ralph Abercromby at the Battle of Alexandria of 1801. Bryce would (together with Captain W. Mudge of Ordnance Survey renown) help in carrying out General Roy's system of triangulation for connecting the meridians of Greenwich and Paris, and in the measurement of a "base of verification" in Romney Marsh." Note	"The map is inscribed by John Macdonald Kinneir to Brigadier General Sir John Malcolm. Sir John Malcolm (1769-1833) spent the majority of his career in India in the employ of the East India Company. Whilst in India he gained a keen interest in the Persian Empire that would lead him to undertake several envoys to Persia under the auspices of the East India Company. In Persia, Malcolm not only successfully introduced the potato, but also took with him several men to conduct research into the country. One such was Kinneir, who in 1813, produced a 'Geographical Memoir of the Persian Empire', which described in detail the routes between the major towns. The present map was intended to accompany that work.The major reason for his research was Britain's increasing concern over Russia gaining power within the region, and whom they feared might invade India. This battle for influence in the area would continue throughout the nineteenth century and become known as 'The Great Game'." (Lyon and Turnbull)

Note	"Arrowsmith's large and detailed map of the Ottoman Empire and the Black Sea. By the beginning of the nineteenth century the Ottoman Empire had fallen some way from the lofty heights of 1683, when it had threatened the gates of Vienna. The Russo-Turkish wars of the eighteenth century most notably that of 1768-1774 weakened the Empire considerably, and by the time of the present map's publication many of the Great European powers believed her break-up to be imminent.The ramifications of the Empire's gradual decline became know as the Eastern Question, with Britain, Austria, France, and Russia increasingly using the Empire as a pawn in their diplomatic games. At the time of the production of the map during the Napoleonic War - Britain was increasingly concerned by both Russian and French involvement in Ottoman affairs. She feared not only Russian designs on Constantinople and her wish for a Mediterranean port, but also that control by either power of the Eastern Mediterranean would lead to British interests - most notably in India being severely compromised." Note	Scarce early lithographed map of Charleston, without color. Not in Phillips. Beautifully lithographed map of the city, so well done that at first it seems to be engraved. A list of Public Buildings numbered to 80 appears in the lower left. Eight fire wells are located, and the South Carolina Railroad and depot are shown. Keenan also lithographed four Birds Eye views of the city, listed by Reps. Tooley lists maps for Ramsey's Annals of Tennessee 1853 by Keenan and a map titled "Part U.S. 1854."

Note	1st ed. was 1833, later editions by Reed & Barber. An unusual map in two sheets, showing the continent coast to coast. Tanner's influence from his North America map is evident in the west, and Long's map has influenced the plains, but Tanner's U.S. map is the primary source, in the Oregon District, the Plains, and the area east of the Mississippi. The Great Basin is filled with a table of distances and heights of mountains (which convention appears in several maps published in Hartford about this time by Thrall, Huntington, Olney's Geography, etc.). Wheat mentions the 1849 and 1850 editions of this map published by Reed and Barber, but this much earlier and different edition was unknown to him. Not in Phillips. Views of the Capital and the White House. Phelps did a related and somewhat smaller map in 1833 - see our copy. After the 1835 edition, no editions until the 1848 by Reed and Barber (see our 1849, 1850 and 1854 editions). Map is in full color.

Note	Very scarce detailed map of the early Nevada Territory. Wheat: "DeGroot's 'Nevada' of 1863 is truly an impressive performance...cartographical pioneering of the first order." Wheat believed that the map may have actually been published in 1862 (the date of its copyright) but dated 1863 to be up to date, because it shows the eastern boundary of Nevada at the 116th meridian instead of the 115th which was made the boundary in July of 1862. Much is shown in Nevada, but also in western California, Southern Oregon (the Owyhee is "unexplored") and a small corner of Washington Territory (now Idaho). According to Wheat, DeGroot had extensive first hand knowledge of the entire area and the map displays this with great clarity. What is unusual about this map is its sense of accuracy - it looks like nothing has been put in that the author was not sure of - much like Arrowsmith's maps of the early 1800's. W.H. has the Howell copy with DeGroot's printed Guide to the map mentioned by Wheat and Wagner Camp, probably the only copy of the map existing with the guide, and the only copy of the guide. Map is in full color by county.

Note	For some reason Haskell and Stokes date this map 1864 although it was copyrighted by Viele in 1865. Removed from the Report of the Council of Hygiene (see our copy). The map shows all the original water courses of Manhattan Island, with the street grid superimposed on top. Also, three different kinds of land are shown: Marsh, Made Land, and Meadow. Sewer lines are indicated. A very beautiful full color map occasioned by a not so beautiful subject. In 1874 Viele reissued the map in larger format as the Topographical Atlas of the City of New York (see our copy). This map was also published as a separate pocket map, in covers.

This is a remarkable map with twenty vignettes of California scenes and three inset maps showing soil, temperature, and areas. Another inset shows the heights of the Sierra Nevada mountains. All these elements combine to make a beautiful map. Little is know about the maker, Johnstone, except that he drew the Climatic Map of California as well (see our #941). Printed in full color.

Note	A beautiful, early map of Philadelphia in full period color. The scale is given at 75 Perches to 1 inch. The city is shown from the Delaware River to the Schuylkil River with the environs on the north and south. 24 lettered references and 28 numbered references to important places and buildings are below the title and 24 wards are keyed in Roman numbers above the title. Many of the country houses and farms around the city are named, including Penn, Dr. Wistar, and other notable early residents. Three inset views show City Hall, the State House, Court House, Library, and Bank of the United States. The tile is surrounded by a decorative cartouche. The quality of the engraving is superb. Ristow mentions an undated edition that was possibly issued in the year Varle made the surveys, 1796, but more likely in 1802. Wheat and Brun list a c.1794 State I that has one less numbered building reference, no Roman numbered ward references, and "R. Scott Sculp. Philadelphia." This was Varle's first map published in the United States. Until 1807, Varle was known as Peter C. Varle, after 1807 he is known as Charles P. Varle.

Note	The maker of this map, James Cook, surveyor of South Carolina and former marine surveyor, is not to be confused with the Pacific explorer, Captain James Cook. In 1770, James Cook was commissioned by the South Carolina provincial government to make a new survey of the entire province and publish a map, which he completed in 1773. Cummings refers to the map as "the most detailed and accurate printed map of South Carolina, especially for the interior, yet to appear" and further states that "very few copies of this fine map are extant." It provided much of the detail for the later maps by Henry Mouzon and John Stuart. Sellers and Van Ee call it "one of the most important maps in the cartography of the state until the early nineteenth century." It is excessively rare, with only five copies identified in United States institutions, and one in the British Museum. There are two states of this first and only issue, distinguished by the presence in the second state of an additional imprint "Publish'd according to Act of Parliament July 7th. 1773 and Sold by H. Parker in Cornhill" under the neat line. This copy is the first state, with two of the other six copies being first state as well. There are six inset maps: Beaufort, Camden, Georgetown, Port Royal, Charles Town, and Harbour of Charles Town. The main map is very detailed, showing land owners in profusion. Along the coast are many navigation notes, indicative of Cook's maritime background. This appears to have been Cook's only major map production, his other work is limited to three harbor charts published in 1766 (illustrated by Black): A Draught of Port Royal Harbour (similar to the Port Royal inset map on the South Carolina 1773), A Draught of the Harbour of Halifax, and A Draught of West Florida.
