No maps, but it has the colorful state seals, and hand color portrait of George Washington in decorative cartouche above the title. A companion to the Ornamental Map of the United States and Mexico and the Pictorial View of the World. All three maps came from the same source.

33rd Cong.,1st Sess., Senate Ex Doc. No.77. From a government publication on tax collection, published in July of 1854 (see our copy). Shows Kansas and Nebraska (possibly the first government map to do so) and the Gadsden purchase. Slightly larger scale than Burr's 1839 Map of the U.S., and, of course, entirely different western topography. However, there is a graphic similarity (lettering, overall look) between this and the earlier map. Burr is listed on the map as "Draftsman U.S. Senate." Shows Ports. States and districts boundaries indicated in red and yellow outline. Depth of water shown by soundings. Prime meridians are Greenwich and Washington, D.C.

Note
Very early issue of Warren's Pacific Railroad general map of the U.S. When the Pacific Railway Survey reports were published in 1855, the large Warren map of the U.S. was not completed and a smaller map was issued with a note by Warren that the larger map would soon be ready for publication. This issue of the map is dated 1855 only, unlike the final issue which was dated 1854-5-6-7 (see our #0693). Also, the list of authorities here is shorter than the later issue and has no dates later than 1855. Most importantly, this issue has major areas blank that are filled in the final issue. Various routes are drawn in ms on the map, in red and blue lines, all proceeding from points in the Midwest to the west coast, as well as some north - south routes. Also, a red line is drawn from east to west next to the 38th parallel. We think these are the trails used by travelers, perhaps a few years later, but we can't be sure. There is another early issue of this map that is between this 1855 issue and the version published with the final reports - it is dated 1857, has fewer "blank" areas that this and has more and later dated authorities (see WH copy).

Full color map with no publisher name, and date; Wheat says Haven, 1846. This copy was published late in 1846; see our early 1846 copy for a different issue. Streeter 3871 attributes this to Ensign and Thayer due to its similarity to their 1848 Ornamental Map of the U.S. and Mexico (Streeter 3872). Wheat says that this map is the source of Haven's broadside map of 1846 (Wheat 26) and the Journal of Commerce map of 1848 (Wheat 47), which use the top 2/3 and bottom 2/3 respectively, of this map, and therefore Wheat attributes this to Haven. The 1846 date is the latest date in the statistics on the states that flank the map. Wheat mentions that he found a copy in Farnham's Life and Travels in California, and our copy has written on the back in ms "Life and Travels in California," so this may be another place it was used, or what it was originally made for (see our copy of the Farnham with the map). See High Ridge 15 for two issues of the Haven 1846 broadside (Streeter 3865, 3866). includes "panoramic view of Oregon and California, and state seals. Relief shown by hachures. Prime meridians are Greenwich and Washington, D.C.

2nd 1858 edition, adds Ives Grand Canyon expedition. Also adds information from Warren's third expedition. Schubert says there was an earlier 1858 edition that filled in information in Oregon but did not include the Ives information. Schubert also quotes a letter from Warren stating that this edition was sent to the printer in 1859. Freyhold's name appears on the title for the first time. It is dropped in the next (1867) edition and then reappears in the 1868 edition. Rare - apparently there is only one other copy of this map - in the Millard Fillmore Map Collection in the LOC (see Stephenson article in Map Collector No. 12). This copy came from the Bancroft Library as a duplicate - perhaps they thought it was a duplicate of the 1857 edition. With brown wood side rollers. Map is without color and mounted on linen.

A most interesting early civil war map, probably issued as a broadside. See also our pocket map issue. Compare to 1846, '47, and '48 issues. Derived from the 1848 edition by Ensigns and Thayer, this edition uses the same U.S. base map (cerograph) updated to show changes in the western U.S., and changing the map title to "Map of the United States and Mexico" (eliminating "Including Oregon, Texas and the Californias"). Portraits of Lafayette and Franklin flank Washington (replacing Gen. Taylor and Gen. Scott). "Distances in Mexico" is removed from the lower left of the map. The rest of the broadside is unchanged. Seven years after the Mexican War, the patriotic themes of expansion continue in this map. Full color map. Includes "Panoramic view from New York to the Pacific Ocean". Relief shown by hachures. Compare to 1846, '47 Ornamental Map by H. Phelps. This copy is the same as the Streeter 3872, but a slight variant of the Wheat Gold 38 (Changes in the Cincinnati, Boston and Buffalo addresses). Wheat suggests that the map is a cerograph or a wood cut - we believe it is a cerograph. This piece celebrates the U.S. victory over Mexico and shows graphically the growth of U.S. territory from coast to coast. Views of the Contemplated Oregon Railroad from New York to the Pacific Coast, Portraits of Generals Taylor and Scott, etc. A table of Distances in Mexico is in the lower right corner of the map. Rufus Blanchard's name appears in the lower left under the Great Temple. There was an edition of 1855 by Ensign, Bridgman and Fanning (see our copy and see Streeter 3892 for 1854, also by EB&F). Full color. Relief shown by hachures. Prime meridians are Greenwich and washington, D.C.

Scarce War of 1812 map. Seven vignettes show important sea battles of the War of 1812. Information on the Post roads, other routes, population of states and territories is given in the borders. A curious note regarding fishing and grapes appears in northern Illinois - seems to be unique to this map. A later reissue of this map was put out in 1825 by Lewis Robinson (see Ristow 271). The map is not very up to date regarding political changes - it does not show Missouri Territory or Louisiana (both 1812). The copyright appears at the top of the map - July 6, 1813. It is engraved by A. Doolittle of New Haven and Kensett of Cheshire. Karpinski 13 is an 1812 Map of the United States and Canada by Kensett and Doolittle, based on surveys by Tardieu, and somewhat smaller in size. Outline color by state. Borders contain tables of distance on the Great Post Road from Pasamaquoddy (ME) to St. Mary's (GA), on the Post Road from Albany (NY) to Montreal ; also population and products of states. Relief shown pictorially and by hachures.
