This is probably the prepublication manuscript drawing for the final printed version of this map that was issued in the same year - see our 4218.000. It is twice the size and scale of the final printed version, and is beautifully hand drawn and colored. It is amazing that a map this large has survived outside of an institutional library for so long. Apparently it was kept in a family for several generations. It was leant to us by its current owner so that we could scan it and put it online. From our notes to the printed version: Greatly detailed strip map over twenty feet long showing the surveyed routes of the New York and New Haven Railroad. The line was opened in 1849. The map is unique for a railroad map in its huge size, large scale, elegance of drawing, and variety of information shown (houses, trails, rivers, turnpikes, lighthouses, harbors, hills, swamps, etc.). |

| Note |
Very early issue of Warren's Pacific Railroad general map of the U.S. When the Pacific Railway Survey reports were published in 1855, the large Warren map of the U.S. was not completed and a smaller map was issued with a note by Warren that the larger map would soon be ready for publication. This issue of the map is dated 1855 only, unlike the final issue which was dated 1854-5-6-7 (see our #0693). Also, the list of authorities here is shorter than the later issue and has no dates later than 1855. Most importantly, this issue has major areas blank that are filled in the final issue. Various routes are drawn in ms on the map, in red and blue lines, all proceeding from points in the Midwest to the west coast, as well as some north - south routes. Also, a red line is drawn from east to west next to the 38th parallel. We think these are the trails used by travelers, perhaps a few years later, but we can't be sure. There is another early issue of this map that is between this 1855 issue and the version published with the final reports - it is dated 1857, has fewer "blank" areas that this and has more and later dated authorities (see WH copy). |

2nd 1858 edition, adds Ives Grand Canyon expedition. Also adds information from Warren's third expedition. Schubert says there was an earlier 1858 edition that filled in information in Oregon but did not include the Ives information. Schubert also quotes a letter from Warren stating that this edition was sent to the printer in 1859. Freyhold's name appears on the title for the first time. It is dropped in the next (1867) edition and then reappears in the 1868 edition. Rare - apparently there is only one other copy of this map - in the Millard Fillmore Map Collection in the LOC (see Stephenson article in Map Collector No. 12). This copy came from the Bancroft Library as a duplicate - perhaps they thought it was a duplicate of the 1857 edition. With brown wood side rollers. Map is without color and mounted on linen. |

Land sale promotion. Map shows railroad lands in red. Probably made specially by Colton for the railroad - this is not the atlas map (it is larger) and it has the simplicity of a railroad map - it shows the stations along the route which is delineated by a thick black line. The text promotes the wonders of Illinois for farming. Explanatory remarks includes Illinois population 1840-1860, School fund, and Central land sale. Prime meridian is Greenwich. |

| Note |
Removed from the United States Register by John Disturnell for 1854 (Wheat 801 refers to this as the "Congressional Directory, 1st Session, 33rd Congress"). Wheat missed the fact that this map is taken from the same base map as Colton's 1849 "Map of the United States, The British Provinces...Showing The routes of The U.S. Mail Steam Packets to California..." It has the same inset view of Pyramid Lake, but the inset map of the Gold Regions is omitted as well as the inset of South America. A table is added in the upper right of "Geographical Statistics." And this later map extends northward about 8 inches further than the 1849 map, to include all of Alaska and Canada. Several railroad routes to the west coast are shown, and there is a mysterious circle about six inches in diameter (about 1400 miles in scale) around Chicago, with no explanation given for it. Nebraska is shown in reduced size, but no Kansas. There are many updates to the map in the West, compared to the 1849. Disturnell published the U.S. Directories during the 1840's, 50's, 60's, and 70's, and most of them had one or another of Colton's North America maps. See also our somewhat different 1852 issue (#4715). Full and outline color. Shows railroads, trails, roads, town and cities, Indian tribal areas, and drainage. Relief shown by hachures. Prime meridians are Greenwich and Washington, D.C. |

A spectacular map, missed by Wheat. With full and outline color. Shows the route of the proposed Northern Pacific Railroad. Covers the entire U.S. and Canada west of the Mississippi, and south to the 38th parallel. One immediately recognizes the use of the Warren/Freyhold "Map of the Territory of the United States..." of 1868, for the lower portion of this map - it is an exact copy. The upper portion appears to be a copy of some official English and/or Canadian survey map. Isothermal lines, railroad routes, latitudes of major European Cities, Distances to Asia, Coal fields, and notes about usability of the soil and forests are added. A profile shows the "Difference Between The Elevations of the Northern Pacific and the Union Pacific Railroads." Relif shown by hachures. |

Removed from Palmer's 1869 "Report of Surveys...for a route extending the Kansas Pacific Railway to the Pacific Ocean." Palmer used an exact copy Keeler's 1868 reduced scale edition of his National Map of the United States without credit in this first issue although Palmer's map adds much material along the line of the proposed southern continental route, especially in the Grand Canyon, in fact, this map is best known as the first map to use the name "Grand Canyon" of the Colorado. The Kansas Pacific had dreams of extending their line to California, as shown on this map, but it never happened. The map shows the routes of the Northern Pacific, the Union and Central Pacific, and the Southern Route. Ms color red and blue lines have been drawn on the various routes, adding an additional route from Centreville, Nevada, to Portland, Oregon (probably following Dodge's proposals - see his report). The main Kansas Pacific line has at least sixteen proposed branches! There is a later issue of this map that credits Keeler as a source (see our copy). |

Murray's Matchless Historical County, Railroad, Distance And Index Map Of The United States And Illustrated Reference Map Of The World. J. Morrison Murray, Publisher. Elizabeth, New Jersey. 1883. Copyrighted 1882. Price $4.00 ... (on verso) The Illustrated Reference Map Of The World, For Students, Business Men and Families ... Published By J.M. Murray ... (with 3 large inset maps). |
| List No |
4605.001 |
| Note |
Murray was a small publisher who undoubtedly got his maps from others - in this case, Tunison. The western states on this wall map are from the same plates (although slightly reduced) as the same maps in Tunison's Peerless Universal Atlas of 1885. The eastern states are from a different source than the Tunison atlas, but still probably from another larger scale Tunison wall map of the eastern U.S. The verso of this wall map has wonderful pictures, maps of the other continents, two large hemispheres, and charts. This is a very colorful production, dense with county, railroad, and topographical information. It is similar and perhaps derived from the Watson map of the same year (see our #4793). Full color by county. Includes chrnological and statistical tables. Relief shown by hachures. Prime meridians are Greenwich and Washington, D.C. |

Pennsylvania's Great Highway And Its Tributary Lines. Engraved & printed at A. Kollner's Litho Establisht. cor. of Secd. & Dock Sts. Phila. |
| List No |
5191.000 |
| Note |
Modelski dates this map circa 1850 - the map itself is undated. We presume that it was published by Kollner for the Sunbury and Erie Railroad, which is the only railroad labeled in Pennsylvania and presumably the state's "Great Highway" referred to in the title. The entire middle northern U.S. is shown, west to the Mississippi. Tributary railroads in Ohio, Indiana and Illinois are shown in detail. Limited topographical features are shown, as is typical for a railroad map. As an example of Kollner's lithographic work, it is quite simple in style and execution, with fairly elaborate hand coloring. Outline color by state. See our #4688 for another, more typical Kollner work. Relief shown by hachures. |
