This image is a composite of Sections I to LXIII of the birdseye drawings of the Archduchy Austria below the Enns. (Perspectiv-Karte des Erzherzogtums Oesterreich unter der Ens.) These birdseye views when joined together (see our Composite) make probably the largest such view of any country that we have seen. Together they cover about 3,000 square miles at a large scale of two inches to one mile. They give a unified view of the landscape that is at a consistent scale (unlike other birdseyes that use diminishing perspective), and the level of detail of cultural information is extraordinary. Second edition - the first was proof. Lavishly and beautifully embellished map emphasizing Spanish colonial power in South America. Went through many editions with various political implications over a period of decades. Sheets 1 through 7 in this copy are all second edition (sheet 8 is first edition as in all copies printed). Like the JCB copies, sheets 2 and 5 have the ocean names added in manuscript. All paper in this copy is Dutch, sheet 5 is D & C Blau, all other sheets are Pieter Van der Ley (Smith found only one sheet in all copies he examined that had a Dutch water mark) .The only other copy of this second edition is in the Biblioteca Nacional in Madrid. Outline color. Prime meridian of Tenerife is used, but others are also scaled in: of Madrid, Paris, London and Isla de Hierro (Portuguese). Two large inset maps: Puerto de Callao (Lima) and Sitio de Angostura (site of Angostura). Juan de la Cruz spent ten years collecting measurements made by explorers and colonists and incorporated in the map valuable geographical and historical news, with some references to the sources used. This is probably the most important map of South America made in the 18th century. When the eight sheets are joined together they make a huge and impressive wall map. No game was found 30 miles each way from Fort Laramie. Grass was scanty as was fuel. It is stated that, "Sioux Indians are not to be trusted." Notes from Fremont's report states that Fort Laramie should be used as an established military post. It would make the whole area safer and could also continue to be a trading post. |

This section of the map includes the Wind River Mountains and a discussion of the continental divide by Fremont. In his report Fremont states, "We mounted the barometer in the snow of the summit ... giving 13, 570 feet for the elevation above the Gulf of Mexico. Fields of snow lay far below us: boundless mountains stretched before us. A stillness the most profound, and a terrible solitude, forced themselves constantly on the mind as the great features of this place." This section traverses the war ground of the Indians, and so it is noted that guards and watches should be in place. |

Water, though good and plenty, is difficult to reach, as the river is hemmed in by high and vertical rocks and many of the bystreams are without water in the dry season. Grass is only to be found at the marked camping places, and barely sufficient to keep strong animals from starvation. Game there is none. The road is very rough by volcanic rocks, detrimental to wagons and carts. In sage bushes consists the only Fuel. Lucky, that by all these hardships the traveller is not harassed by the Indians, who are peacable & harmless." |

This map contains the largest amount of written data. Copious notes are included from October 10th through October 25th. The last note tells about the first sighting of the Columbia River. Fremont notes that the distance from the mouth of the Kansas to "this place" is about 2,000 miles. They were greeted at Fort Wallah-Wallah by Mr. McKinley, the commander of the post, who received them "with great civility." |

This is a superb atlas of the West Indies and a companion atlas to Jeffery's American Atlas also first issued in 1775. The latest date on the charts in this copy is 1788 (The Cape Verd Islands). There is a beautifully illustrated title page that precedes the main title page, which reads "The West Indian Atlas..." Jefferys died in 1771, Sayer and Bennet acquired his materials in preparation for this atlas, and published the atlas posthumously under his name (as they did with the American Atlas) in 1775. The heart of this atlas and the most detailed part is the sixteen sheet large chart and index sheet of the whole of the West Indies. The rest of the atlas consists of charts of the Atlantic Islands and the British Channel, as well as individual maps and charts of seventeen islands in the West Indies. Twenty seven pages of text gives the sources for the maps and charts, and a historical account of the West Indies. Three of the large chart maps also appeared in the American Atlas. Comparing the two Florida sheets in this atlas to the same sheets in the 1775 American Atlas, numerous changes to the coast lines and other features appear. That would indicate that Sayer updated the charts as the atlas was reissued - Phillips shows issues of 1775, 1781, 1787, 1794, 1796, 1807, and 1818. With the 1794 and later editions, 20 maps are added of various additional islands. Sayer and Bennet also published in 1775 a smaller version of this atlas called "The West India Islands: From Actual Survey and Observations..." that consisted of the same text, a general chart of the Islands, and the same sixteen or seventeen (depending on the edition) charts of the islands that appear in the larger version (P3942). Finally, Jefferys himself published in 1762 "A Description of the Spanish Islands and Settlements on the Coast of the West Indies" which was issued in quarto, with a general chart and 32 maps and plans of harbors and towns (P3941). |
