This Quarto issue of the report is the House issue, except for volume XI which is the Senate issue. W. Heckrotte has an unusual copy of the Warren U.S. map found in this report. It is dissected on linen and is an earlier version of the map published with the Quarto report. It has 40 authorities vs. 42 in the quarto issue map, shorter note to left of authorities, lots of plate differences, especially: nothing in Owyhee area, differences in N.M., Calif., etc. Looks like someone asked for the map before it was finished -see the Lack of ocean lines in the top half south of Gray's Harbor. In 13 volumes. Bound in full leather with "Explorations and Surveys for a Railroad to the Pacific Ocean" and the volume number on the spine in gold. |

| Note |
Reissue, with new discoveries, of 1857 Warren "Map of the Territory of the United States..." Although Freyhold's name is not on the title, he clearly redrew this map from his earlier 1858 edition (where his name does appear on the title). This is earlier than the 1868 Warren/Freyhold editions (Streeter 3080 and 3081), and should be distinguished from them in having the title still in the lower left corner (not in the lower center as in the 1868 Warren/Freyhold editions), and because it does not have the Alaska inset, has 47 authorities vs. 48, and is dated Aug 26, 1867 in Ms. next to the same inscription mentioned by Streeter on his later copy (Wm. E. Merrill, etc., which Streeter mistakes for E. Hamill). Mail routes in red ink (original?)(Streeter says they were dropped from the second 1868 ed.) plus many interesting Ms. additions of names of forts, and extension of pacific railroad. Cf. Wheat 1185. Wheat does not mention this edition and was not aware of it (see his "correction" of Wheeler's mention of the map in the note, p. 244). See a very informative article by Lewis Buttery on a slightly earlier state of this map (early 1867) found at West Point - "Warren Map of 1867." Outline color. Map is dissected into 24 sections, edged in blue silk, and folded into a new burgundy cloth folding case 30x22 with "Warren & Freyhold. Map of Exploratations (sic) for Pacific R.R. 1865-67" stamped in gilt. |

The compilation of English and Canadian charts and Surveys embracing the Northerly region of this Map, was platted in connection with the official U.S. War Department Map (the lower portion) at the Bureau of U.S. Topographical Engineers by the kind permission of Maj. A spectacular map, missed by Wheat. With full and outline color. Shows the route of the proposed Northern Pacific Railroad. Covers the entire U.S. and Canada west of the Mississippi, and south to the 38th parallel. One immediately recognizes the use of the Warren/Freyhold "Map of the Territory of the United States..." of 1868, for the lower portion of this map - it is an exact copy. The upper portion appears to be a copy of some official English and/or Canadian survey map. Isothermal lines, railroad routes, latitudes of major European Cities, Distances to Asia, Coal fields, and notes about usability of the soil and forests are added. A profile shows the "Difference Between The Elevations of the Northern Pacific and the Union Pacific Railroads." Relif shown by hachures. |

Removed from Palmer's 1869 "Report of Surveys...for a route extending the Kansas Pacific Railway to the Pacific Ocean." Palmer used an exact copy Keeler's 1868 reduced scale edition of his National Map of the United States without credit in this first issue although Palmer's map adds much material along the line of the proposed southern continental route, especially in the Grand Canyon, in fact, this map is best known as the first map to use the name "Grand Canyon" of the Colorado. The Kansas Pacific had dreams of extending their line to California, as shown on this map, but it never happened. The map shows the routes of the Northern Pacific, the Union and Central Pacific, and the Southern Route. Ms color red and blue lines have been drawn on the various routes, adding an additional route from Centreville, Nevada, to Portland, Oregon (probably following Dodge's proposals - see his report). The main Kansas Pacific line has at least sixteen proposed branches! There is a later issue of this map that credits Keeler as a source (see our copy). |

Wheat devotes three pages to this map and states "Altogether, this is a fascinating map, particularly to one who has read the annual reports of the Union Pacific engineers, almost always published without illustrative maps." The map shows the route of the railroad from the Missouri river to Humboldt Wells in Nevada (the Central Pacific beat them to this point) and provides great topographic detail on both sides of the route, for distances varying from 40 to 100 miles. A profile of the route appears below the main map. Separately published by the Union Pacific, this is a scarce map. Without color. Scale 20 miles to 1 inch. Relief shown by hachures. |
