Above the title is an explanation of the "American System of Weather Signals." The Chicago map shows the Burnt District in red. Lots of useful text spread around, in the classic Watson manner.

This is taken from Colton's large wall map titled "Colton's Map of the United States of America Including Canada and a Large Portion of Texas" (see our #4500). It is a very decorative map - there is an elaborate floral border and city views of St. Louis, Cincinnati, and Louisville, plus two vignettes of a buffalo and a deer in the upper corners. See our #5159 for the 1857 edition. Folded into stamped black leather covers 16x11 with "Map Of The Western States J.H. Colton." in gilt.

This edition is not listed by Karrow, who shows editions of 1853, 1854 (see our #4985) and 1856. In order to show more of the new Kansas and Nebraska Territories, this edition widens the map and slides it west, eliminating western New York and Pennsylvania; the title is shifted from the lower right to the upper left. Many new counties are shown in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Many new completed and proposed railroads are added. Full color by county, folded into stamped red leather covers 16x10.5 with "Map Of The Western States J.H. Colton" in gilt.
