Scarce map with Drawings by Bruff. According to Tooley, Bruff did: State of Florida, 1846, this map, Tehuantepec maps, 1851, Seat of War in Virginia, 1861. In Phillips p410, this map and another smaller map also published by Disturnell are listed. From the Introduction to his travel diary, it is clear that Bruff drew for the Topographical Engineers and other government departments for over 50 years. Many of his products may not have his name on them - he is quoted in the introduction (page xxx) saying that he drew duplicates of the Fremont maps and plates for both houses of Congress. The four inset maps are titled: Plan of Monterey, Map Showing the Battle Grounds of the 8th and 9th May 1846, Tampico and its Environs, and Chart of the Bay of Vera Cruz. Map is folded into brown cloth covers 15x10 with "Map Of The Seat Of War In Mexico." stamped in gilt. |

Reissue of 1848 2nd edition. Wheat says that only one copy of the map without the "2nd edition" added exists, he doesn't say where, also he says that only one copy exists, at the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris, with 2nd edition and no date after it (the true 2nd edition of 1848). Wheat's copy is like this one, as is the Huntington Library copy. There are no changes other than colored boundaries and the addition of New Mexico in type, between this and the 1848 edition. Map is folded into yellow card board covers 14x9 printed with "Hutawa's Traveling Map Of Mexico, And California." |

Third edition. Shows Colona, Shoshone, Nevada. The maker of this map must have seen copies of Mitchell's 1859 New National Map - this has the same proposed territorial names that Mitchell used that year. This also has a line dividing the northern and southern states in the civil war. According to Phillips Maps, this was also No. 48 in the Atlas Universel for 1862. Map is dissected into 21 sections and mounted on tan linen with the book plate of Andriveau-Goujon. Covers are dark green cloth 23.5x14.5 with "Etats-Unis Et Mexique. Andriveau-Goujon. Rue Du Bac, 2I." stamped in gold on the front with the same embossed gold and green globe as the 1862 issue. The spine is stamped with "Etats-Unis" in gold. Map has full color by state. |

With eleven pages of text titled "Particulars of Routes, Distances, Fares, &c., to Accompany Colton's Map of California and the Gold Region. Collected from Official Documents." On the map there is a view of Pyramid Lake over the title, taken from the Fremont Report and inset maps of the Gold Region and South America, showing the route around Cape Horn. Ackerman did the Lithography for this map as well as the Map of California, Oregon, and Texas (see our #98). This is the second state of the map - the first appeared in Fayette Robinson's "California and its Gold Regions" issued earlier in 1849 (see our 5029). Streeter: "This appears to be the first Colton map showing the gold fields." The North American portion of the map is taken from the North American map inset to the huge Smith/Colton "Map of the United States and the Canadas..." first issued in 1844, this inset later became the Johnson Family Atlas North American map of 1860. The map and the view of Pyramid Lake also appears in a Disturnell/Colton map of North America issued in 1854 and earlier (see our 3507). Outline color. Map is folded into dark blue cloth covers 13.5x8.5 with "Colton's Map Of The United States, Mexico &c. Shewing the Gold Region in California" printed in black on a tan paper label. |

Shows the Gold Regions in California. Atwood made important maps of the Gold Rush for Colton and Ensign & Thayer in 1849. In this map he publishes his own Gold Rush map, showing the routes to California and Oregon. This map is rare: it is not in Philips, Karrow, Wheat, Streeter, Graff, or nine years of Jolly. Wheat Gold 258 is an 1854 derivative of this map put out by Ensign, Bridgman & Fanning. This 1851 map is very well done, and possibly the only map that Atwood published under his own name. See our 2878 and 3209 for related maps. Full color. Folded into red embossed cloth covers 14.5x9.5 with title "Map Of The United-States Canada, Mexico, Central America And The West India Islands" stamped in black. |

The seventh edition known as the "Treaty Map." This map was "the official cartographic reference consulted in negotiating the peace treaty of February 2, 1848, which terminated the Mexican war..." (Martin). The first of seven issues in 1847, this is easily identifiable by having only two inset maps in the Gulf of Mexico (later issues have four). The twelfth edition was also used as a treaty map. This copy folds into red cloth covers 15x10, with "Mexico" stamped in gold, and with "Statistics of the Republic of Mexico" pasted on the inside front cover. Signature of Cornelius S. Van Alstine, U.S. Navy, on verso of map. Streeter refers to this seventh edition as "the most important edition of the Disturnell map." Map is in full color. |

Unusual medium size map of the U.S., not seen before. This map is taken from D.G. and A.J. Johnson's "New Map of the Union," 1857 (see our #364), updated and somewhat changed. This is further evidence of the close relationship between the Johnsons and Colton in the late fifties and early sixties. Colorado is shown, as well as a horizontal Arizona, and Nevada. Interesting notations about Columbus appear in the West Indies, in the same text as on the Johnsons' v16ersion. In 1860 an earlier version of this map appeared in Carlos Butterfield's "United States and Mexican Mail Steamship Line...", dated 1859 on the map and published by Johnson and Browning (see our #3484). 3rd edition. Martin shows 10 issues 1825-47. 1st edition was 1825 (see W.H. copy). The 1826 edition of this map (see our copy) was the base for the White, Gallaher & White "Mapa de los Estados Unidos de Mejico" of 1828, which was then copied by Disturnell in 1846 (see our copy). Originally, Tanner copied this map from the southwestern portion of his Map of North America. This 1846 edition has updated the western cartography to include Fremont's route and topography in California and the Rocky Mountains. Interestingly, Lake Tahoe is labeled Flag Lake, a name we have never seen before. The 1826 edition of this map established the more northerly boundary of New Mexico and Mexico that White Gallaher & White copied and was ultimately used by Disturnell in his map, and affected the treaty negotiations (see Martin). See our 1847, fifth edition, #5158. Full color map, folded into dark brown cloth covers 15x9.5 with "Tanner's Travelling Map Of Mexico" stamped in gilt. |

The 2nd edition is this copy, almost the same as the 1846 issue (some towns added in Northern Mexico), but dated 1847 (not in Streeter or Wheat). The 3rd edition is dated 1847 and adds the lower inset map mentioned above (Streeter 3869, Wheat Gold 35). With a large inset map of the World, statistics on the Yucatan, boundary notes on Costa Rica, Historical Notes on Belize and the Mosquito Coast, and the usual abundance of Monk's decorative sailing ships. The inside cover lists this map, Monk's New American Map, and Monk's Railroad and Telegraph Map - which we have never heard of before (although Karrow does list an 1856 edition: 1-1612). The first Disturnell edition, and the second Martin edition (after the 1828 White Gallaher and White first edition). Wheat calls this edition a "famous" map. This edition is distinguished by the absence of a trail line running directly from San Antonio to Austin, Texas, that appears on the third Martin edition. Compared to our seventh edition (see our # 2541), there are substantially fewer towns, roads, and physical features both in Mexico and the U.S. The two profiles in the Pacific and two inset maps in the Gulf of Mexico of the 1847 edition are not present. The covers and paste down statistics are the same as our 1847 edition. The map was printed from the same plate as the 1828 White Gallaher and White edition, evidenced by the faint copyright notice in the lower right corner under the neat line, Disturnell made many updates to the 1828 edition, and its republication by him was occasioned by the outbreak of the Mexican War. White Gallaher and White copied and slightly enlarged Henry Tanner's 1826 Map of the United States of Mexico (see our #5176). Martin lists twenty three editions of Disturnell's map. A significant difference between the Disturnell map and the earlier editions by White Gallaher and White, and Tanner, is the moving of the boundary line between Alta and Baja California about 70 miles further north toward San Diego, which was then used as the boundary in the treaty to end the Mexican War. Map is full color, folded into red cloth covers 15x10 with "Mexico." stamped in gold. Relief shown by hachures and spot heights. Prime meridian: Washington. |

Very rare map with no reference to it found in any of the normal bibliographies. The date is estimated. Proposed railway lines are shown to and from San Francisco to New Orleans and Napolian (sic). The map has been distorted severely with San Francisco much too far east. Napoleon, Arkansas, now defunct (why?), according to Baldwin and Thomas' Gazetteer of 1854, was the capital of Desha County. It was situated on the Mississippi at the mouth of the Arkansas. The population was about 1,000 people, and steamboats ran three times a week to Little Rock. Why it was placed so prominently on the map is unknown. Perhaps it was vying to be a terminus for the railroad. Texas is shown at a highly detailed level. The map is in color and folds into brown cloth covers 16x10 with "Map of Mexico Showing The Seat Of War" on the front cover in gilt. |
