Copyright 1864. The first separate map of West Virginia listed in Phillips. No other references found - precedes the two West Virginia oil maps listed in Streeter (3919, 3924). Folded originally, now flat. Virginia is shown as East Virginia. Shows Oil Works, Iron Mines, Coal Mines, as well as several manuscript notions on the location of coal and oil deposits. An attractive map with ornate decorative border, and most likely the first separately published map of this new state. Outline color showing state borders. Not in Stephenson. Tooley lists an (1862) edition (although West Virginia was created in 1863) and the 1864. Tooley also lists a map of Texas by this same Richardson, 1860 - we believe this is incorrect - the Texas map was by Willard Richardson (see Day, Maps of Texas). Scarce. |

Many changes from the first edition, first issue: a scale of miles is added to the right of the title, the town of Snapps Stn. is added in the inset map "Plan of Extension of Oil Creek," and many other creeks are named or added, as are roads, owners' names, etc. These changes may have been occasioned by the the publication of Beer's Atlas of the Oil Region of Pennsylvania in 1865 (see our #62) which includes many of the updates that16 appear on this second issue of Colton's map. First edition, first issue. Streeter was unaware of the two issues of this map and we cannot find any other mention of them. Streeter's comments on the map ("This Colton map is almost certainly earlier than the Hunt or the Townsend & Dale maps, both also of 1865, and it is best for giving a general view of the oil region as first opened up and first developed") indicate that he probably had this first issue of 1865 and had not seen the second issue (see our # 4529) which shows more development. This is the earliest map of the Pennsylvania Oil District that we have seen. It predates the 1865 maps by Beers, Colton and Plumb, Townsend and Dale, Hunt, and Howe (1866). It is large scale and shows excellent detail. Individual wells are shown, and operating wells are distinguished from wells being drilled. An extension flap is attached to the upper left corner of the map showing the East Branch of Oil Creek. Folded into dark green textured cloth covers 18.5x10 with "Map Of The Oil District" in gilt. Not in Streeter (unusual because Streeter has all the other important Oil maps) or any references. Scarce. |

An unusual very large scale map of the center oil region (the largest scale we have seen) made by the photographic process. Privately produced, this map was printed during the hiatus between the First Geological Survey of Pennsylvania ending in 1858, (see our (No. 4120) Henry Darwin Rogers map) and the beginning of the Second Geological Survey in 1874. Henry Wrigley was a civil engineer active in the oil region who self published a series of five oil region maps by the photographic process, on the map he states "By this means (photography) every one can be kept constantly advised of the progress of all developments and possess the information desired at the time he most needs it." Wrigley goes on to say that the most active sections of the map will be updated every three months with "fresh plates." Subscribers will receive the updated sections as they are issued. "As the expense of publishing the work by photographing is very great, and as the work is local, the cost of the maps will be necessarily much greater than heretofore." Each of the large scale maps was $100, and $150 if the buyer wanted the updates - a huge amount in those times, but then this was probably only purchased by those who gambled in the high stakes game of oil development. Photography was used in the Civil War for maps (see our examples) but this is the only instance of its use in the commercial map trade that we have seen. Phillips lists three later Wrigley maps that were lithographed, indicated that this unusual scheme was not long lived. Map is without color. Dissected in 28 sections.
