This was one of the first United States atlases to exclusively feature railroad lines, showing minimal topography (in this later edition more topographical features are added, earlier editions have fewer features shown ) and only showing towns on or next to the railroads lines. We find the maps most interesting and beautiful, although some might find them a bit spare. This copy was published late in 1874 and is the most complete edition. Contains maps of Washington, Wyoming, Montana, New Mexico, Arizona, Western Texas, etc. (similar to our early 1874 edition). The western United States maps are especially interesting. Full color. Bound in quarter leather dark brown and red cloth covered boards stamped with the title "Asher & Adams' new commercial and statistical alas and gazetteer of the United States." in gilt, the same title is blind stamped on the back cover. The remaining leather of the original spine reads "Asher & Adams' atlas and gazetteer of the U.S." Page numbering discontinuous. |

This was the first atlas of Argentina. Phillips notes that this atlas accompanied three volumes of text of the same title, also published in 1873. Phillips does not note this second edition of the same date as the first, adding one map. Martin de Moussy was unable to finish the atlas because of illness and it was completed by L. Bouvet. A beautifully engraved title page precedes the full title page and reads "Atlas de la Confederation Argentine. Bachelier Lith. Gve. Sanier, del. Imp. Lemercier & Cie. Paris." Most of the maps are without color, a few are hand painted in full color. Atlas is bound in quarter leather black cloth covered boards with "Atlas de la Confederation Argentine" stamped in gold on the front, spine is embossed with title "M. De Moussy. Description de la Confederation Argentine. Atlas." |

The first great atlas of Mexico, produced by a Mexican and printed in Mexico. Sabin says only 300 copies were printed. The maps are of each province, with each surrounded by text. Phillips lists two later editions of 1886 with somewhat different titles. The only atlas of Mexico listed by Phillips that is earlier than this atlas is Humboldt's Atlas...de la Nouvelle Espagne of 1811. Has two very interesting plates at the end that relate to Aztec writing. Garcia Cubas was 26 when he published this. Strangely, then, the verso of the title page has 1846 as the copyright date (when the author was 14?). Maps hand col. with outline color. Atlas is bound in quarter leather brown marbled paper covered boards with title embossed in gold on the spine reading "Garcia y Cubas. Atlas geografico de la Republica Mexicana." |

The first Atlas of Peru, with wonderful maps, plans, thematic maps, views and statistical information. The atlas exudes the optimism of the period. In addition to the forty five maps and plans, there are twenty three views and scenes, including a very large fold out panorama of Paz Soldan's home city of Arequipa. This issue's title page is the same as Sabin's, the title of the copy listed in Phillips does not have the dedication to Castilla and has Fermin Didot Hermanos as the publisher - which is also the case with the copy owned and described by Michael Layman in TM C. Apparently there were two Spanish issues made in the same year in Paris, Durand also published a Paris edition in French in 1865. The contents of our copy and Layland's copy appear to be identical, so perhaps only the title pages were different. Nine of the Department maps in our copy are hand colored, with the rest uncolored (normally the Department maps are uncolored). Paz Soldan published a large six sheet Mapa del Peru in 1864 (see The Map Collector). Atlas is bound in half leather brown marbled paper covered boards with "Paz Soldan. Atlas Geografico Del Peru" stamped in gold on the spine. David Rumsey Collection copy lacks pl. LIV. |

This is an atlas of three maps on 13 sheets: the large map of Lower Canada on ten sheets (scale 1:174,240, size 133x307), the map of Upper and Lower Canada on two sheets (scale 1:2,200,000, size 76x123), and the single sheet map of Gaspe (scale 1:506,880, size 40x48). These maps were intended to accompany Bouchette's Topographical Description of Lower Canada (see our copy). The first two maps have outline color. Atlas is bound into half leather marbled paper covered boards. The title on the atlas spine "Description Topograph du Bas Canada" may indicate that this atlas was issued to accompany the 1815 French edition of the book published in London (Sabin 6850). The large ten sheet map is extraordinary - it is over ten feet long when joined and almost five feet tall. It has five views and three large inset maps of Montreal, Quebec, and Three Rivers. The detail and graphic elegance of the large map is the equal (or perhaps the superior) of any of the contemporary maps that we have seen (and none of which are on such a large scale - the only potential candidate would be Eddy's Map of the Country Thirty Miles Round the City of New York). Of course the engraving was done by the Walker firm in London, whose resources were up to the New York and Philadelphia engravers, or better, so a comparison with American produced maps is not entirely fair. Bouchette's work as Surveyor General must have instilled in him an obsession with the accuracy and fineness of detail that one sees in these maps. |
