| Full Title |
Wyld's Sketch of the Country Around Montreal, Shewing the Villages & Military Positions. London, Published by James Wyld, Geographer to the Queen, Charing Cross East, Der. 28th 1837 ... Day & Haghe Lithrs to The Queen, Gate St. |
| List No |
5066.000 |
| Note |
This map was issued after the 1837 rebellion against British rule. It shows transportation systems, militia locations, "Irish Settlements," towns, and "Disaffected Villages burnt by the Queen's troops" (including St. Denis and St. Charles). Water is handpainted in blue, otherwise map is without color. The map was lithographed by Day & Haghe, "Lithors to The Queen, Gate St." and as such is an early example of map lithography in the English map trade. Ristow points out that maps in Parliamentary papers were lithographed due to the need for quick reproductions, and the urgency of the 1837 Rebellion probably is the reason this map was lithographed. It is the only map published by Wyld that we have seen that was lithographed. This map did not have a wide circulation and is scarce. Relief shon by hachure. |

| Full Title |
Military Map of a part of Eastn. Virginia Department of Maj: Genl: J.A. Dix Comdg 7th Army Corps completed from several Military Reconnaissances & Surveys under the Direction of Capt: Wm. Heine Topt. Engr. U.S. drawn & compiled by Lieut. Ch. Worret & G. Kayser Traced by Lieut. Ch. Worret. |
| List No |
5081.000 |
| Note |
This immense, large scale map at first appears to be manuscript, entirely hand drawn. Dissected into 35 sections and mounted on linen. Upon closer inspection, it proves to be a lithograph of a hand drawn field map, with several large sections filled in or corrected in manuscript and with the waterways colored blue. It is centered on the area around Suffolk, Virginia, extending north and east to Fort Monroe, Hampton Roads and Norfolk, west to Franklin, Zuni and the Blackwater River, and south to about nine miles south of the North Carolina border. It was probably hand drawn and lithographed for immediate field use (note the title says "Traced by Lieut. Ch. Worret") with a very small press run, and corrected and updated as needed. There is a great deal of local information shown: the names of all property owners and their farms and buildings, railroads, rivers and small streams, the large Dismal Swamp, fortifications, roads and paths and distances thereon, "old Rebl. camp," "Rebl camp," "Marmaduke Ellis (Deserter)," "Negroes," and more. A "Note" at the top right corner gives the sources of the map: "Coast lines by U.S. Coast Survey" and then a list of surveys by Maj Wetterall, Maj. Stratton, 1st Lieut. James, 1st Lieut. Ch. Worrett, Lt. Soederquist, and Geo. Kayser, that were used in the construct of this map. Below the Note is the manuscript signature of "Lieut. James Ch Engr. Suffolk" and a manuscript presentation of the map "To Brig. Gen Terry with compliments of 1st Lt. C.H. James Act. Chief Engineer Maj. Gen Pecks Staff." We have dated the map (1863) based on the Soederquist Map of Suffolk & vicinity (Stephenson 661) which Stephenson dates (1863). Soederquist's map is on the same scale as this map, and is most likely a companion map to the Soederquist map of Norfolk & Vicinity that is listed in the "Note" as a source for this map. Map of Texas and part of New Mexico compiled in the Bureau of Topgraphl. Eng'rs. chiefly for military purposes, 1857 ... Lith. of Ritchie & Dunnovant. Printed at H.F. Walling's Map Establishment, 90 Fulton St., New York. |
| List No |
5141.000 |
| Note |
Probably the best and most detailed military map of Texas issued before the Civil War - rivers, roads, explorer's routes, water holes, forts and towns are shown. Includes "List of authorities." The Warren map of 1857 (see our #4013) incorporates much of this information, with even more information from this map appearing on the Warren map of 1858 (see our #2750). A later version of this map appeared in the Atlas To Accompany The Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies (see our #1780) as plate 54. Martin and Martin incorrectly state that the map was not published until it appeared in the "Atlas to Accompany..." This is the only government map published by H.F. Walling that we know of. This copy came from a group of about ten copies found with the J.D. Graham papers. Without color. Scarce. Relief shown by hachures. |
