Reproduced from the Original Drawing in the War Office London. 24 sheets Scale 6 1/2 inches to a mile. 10 feet by 4 feet. The successive British Commanders in Chief in America Generals Sir William Howe, Sir Henry Clinton, and Sir Guy Carleton during their respective occupations of New York and Environs in the Revolution caused this manuscript plan from time to time to be kept up. The plan extends from below Guanas Bay to the Heights of Spikendevi, a distance of about eighteen or nineteen miles. It shows the Fortifications, Defenses, Topography, Streets, Roads, etc. of the whole of the Island of New York with the Harbor Islands, Water Ways, and River Frontages on the Hudson and East Rivers, the Military Works on Long Island including Brooklyn, the Works in Paulus Hook and parts of the Jersey Shore. It has a copious Table of References to various works British and American, some of them with notes as to the time of their construction or destruction. The Original Drawing, ten feet by four feet, is on a scale of about six and a half inches to a mile. It is handsomely reproduced for subscribers only in careful facsimile on 24 sheets which can be joined up and mounted like the original as a Wall Map or mounted on linen if desired. It will be issued either mounted on linen to fold in book form with leather slip case 13 x 10 inches or the 24 sheets 22 x 15 inches, each will be supplied in a portfolio. Note A set of six hand-drawn maps on semi-transparent waxed linen with some color. Some areas are colored on the verso to highlight the areas in a muted style. We think that some type of backlighting was planned to be used to create a photolithographic plate from which printing would be done. No evidence was found that it was ever printed. These sheets were deaccessioned from the Santa Fe Railroad collection in the 1980s. Lewis Kingman did the route survey from Albuquerque to Needles. Relief shown by hachures. This sheet has colored lines on the verso to add color to the various areas depicted on the recto.

Note Exquisite hand drawn maps of the states. Notwithstanding the title, this is a geography book hand drawn by a very promising student. It includes descriptions of Astronomical Geography, the Ptolemaic, Brahean and Copernican Systems, Comets, Great Circles, Equator, Meridian, Horizon, Colures, Tropics, Polar Circles, Zones, Climates, Latitude and Longitude, a section titled America, and 19 maps of the states with a descriptive page for each. The maps are copied from the 1805 edition of Carey's American Pocket Atlas, except for Ohio, which is from Arrowsmith and Lewis' Atlas, 1812, and Indiana, from an unknown source. The text is copied from Morse's Geography Made Easy, probably 1807, 11th edition, but certainly before the 12th edition (which was changed substantially), the text describing the maps is original. The only mystery is why she used such out of date sources if, in fact, she made this book in 1823. The penmanship is remarkable both in the execution of the maps and text. One of a kind. At the bottom of the title page: "presented to her son T.A. Post - Feb 4th 1872." Emma Willard led the Middlebury Female Academy from 1807-9, see DAB.

Herrith, Philura
Map of the British Possessio …
1814
Manuscript Map
Authors Herrith, Philura
Full Title A Map of the British Possessions in North America, including Part of the United States: Compiled from the Latest Surveys. 1815. Philura Herrith.
List No 3143.000
Note Another school girl's map, very large (two sheet). Probably used Matthew Carey's Map of the British Possessions in North America (1804 ed.) which is smaller than this map but has all the same place names and legends. However, our young cartographer had to figure out the U.S. part of her map by consulting other maps (Carey's does not go that far south) and it is not clear which maps she used - she shows some interesting trails in the states which we can't find on other maps. Overall, an impressive production, somewhat crude in the lettering, but a big effort. Map in outline color.
Leland, H.
New England. H. Leland
1853
Manuscript Map
Authors Leland, H.
Full Title New England. H. Leland.
List No 3195.000
Note Very well executed uncolored map with small vignettes. Leland is probably the Henry Leland mentioned in Appletons' as an artist, although his dates are listed as 1850-1877. The map is dated as 1853 because of the watermark date on the paper. However, the map could have been drawn later. In any event, the name of Henry Leland goes back to the Henry Leland who settled in Massachusetts in 1653 - this H. Leland who made the map is probably from that family.

List No 3201.000
Note Hand drawn map of the World in hemispheres. A well executed wall map done most likely as a school exercise and then preserved as a wall map. Very similar to the Map of the World by M. Anslin, also a manuscript map, and possibly a school project as well (see our copy, #3227). With black top and bottom rollers, and black linen edging. Outline color by continent.

Full Title The World. By M. Anslin. Western Hemisphere. Eastern Hemisphere.
List No 3227.000
Note Hand drawn and colored wall map of the world in hemispheres. Has a drawing of an eagle holding arrows above the title. The date is estimated by this map's similarity to the Anna Bullard hand drawn Map of the World dated 1836. With black top and bottom rollers.
California. Office of State …
Los Angeles & San Bernardino …
1880
Manuscript Map
Authors California. Office of State Engineer, Hall, Wm. Ham. (William Hammond)
Full Title Los Angeles & San Bernardino topography. Wm. H. Hall, State Engineer, Sacramento. (circa 1880)
List No 3451.000
Note Beautiful hand drawn map of the Los Angles-San Bernardino Basin. Pen-and-ink and pencil. Relief shown by hachures. It appears to be a base map on a scale of two miles to an inch, probably preliminary (several of Hall's notations on the edges indicate corrections needed to the topography) and earlier than the 1888 Report titled "Irrigation in California" that had 15 maps that may have been derived from this map. It may also have served as the base for "Drainage area map to accompany report on irrigation and water supply in California" by Wm. Ham. Hall, State Engineer. (188-?). Hall was a famous engineer who was the first state engineer and was responsible for many of the early state water projects (see California Water Atlas). This map does not have any names drawn in except for a few towns, rivers, or railroads lightly penciled in. All the land divisions and city plats are indicated, with mountains, rivers, railroads, roads, arroyos and shorelines shown. Hall also published four maps of the San Joaquin Valley in 1886 (see WH's copy) separately (see Calfornia Water Atlas p.26). "VI." Title and cartographer from verso. "14" on verso.

San Bernadino and Vicinity I …
1880
Manuscript Map
Authors Hall, William Hammond
Full Title (San Bernadino and Vicinity).

Note William Hammond Hall is the presumed author. Large scale hand drawn untitled map showing land owners and water ways in detail. Scale is 4 inches to 1 mile. On the verso is a typed label "Wm. Ham. Hall, San Francisco, 'B' 56, San Bernadino & Vicinity. Irrig. Data." This is a detailed portion of the other Hall ms map. Relief shown by hachures.
Bringhurst, William
East End of L. Ontario
1816
Manuscript Map
Authors Bringhurst, William
Full Title East End of Lake Ontario
List No 3540.001
Note The state maps are dated 1816, the other three maps are undated. The Ontario, Pittsburgh and Zanesville maps are copied from similar maps that appear in Melish's "Geographical Description," most likely the 1820 or 22 edition because of the rounded corners which do not appear in the earlier editions of 1815 and 16. The state maps are copied from Scott's Gazetteer of 1795. The penmanship is very good. All maps in outline color. Relief shown by hachures and shadings.
