References the origins of the idea of using contours for relief depiction, proposed by Philippe Buache in 1752 for bathymetry. See Rumsey Historical Map Collection's Bauche atlas of 1770, entitiled, "Cartes et tables de la geographie physique ou naturelle", wherein bathymetric contours were used for the English Channel. Contours were apparently first used for terrestrial topography by M. Dupin Triel in 1784 on a map of France entitled, "New Method of Expressing Altitudes on Maps with a Memoir by M. Du Caila." Numerous additional references to further information on contours also provided. |

Our estimated date of 1952 may be early because there is a note on this Legend page which states: "Avvertenza, tutti i dati riportati in cifre o espressi per mezzo di diagrammi nelle tavole economiche, quando ne sia taciuta la data, si riferiscono alle piu recenti statistiche ufficiali pubblicate sino al 1958 dai singoli Paesi o da Enti supernazionali (O.N.U., F.A.O., ecc.). Nei casi in cui i valori di produzione variano sensibilmente da un anno all'altro si e preferito reportare, anziche il dato piu recente, la media del dati relativi a piu anni consecutivi." A rough translation to English is "Warning, all data reported in figures or expressed by means of diagrams in the economic table, the date when it is silenced, refer to the most recent official statistics published up to 1958 by individual countries or supranational bodies (UN, FAO, etc..). In cases where the production values vary considerably from year to year and is preferred to report, rather than the more recent data, the average data for the most consecutive years." |
