Exhibiting Mail Routes, Gold Mines, and Including the Most Recent Surveys of the Topographical Bureau. Prepared by Captain John Mullan. ... Drawn by Edward Freyhold, T.E. Lithographed by J. Bien, 24 Vesey, St. N.Y.
List No 0652.001
Note Mullan/Freyhold map, titled "General Map of the North Pacific States and Territories Belonging to the United States and of British Columbia ... Exhibiting Mail Routes, Gold Mines ... Drawn by Edward Freyhold, T.E." Strange Owyhee depiction - shows Kearney River and the Jordan Creek flowing into the Owyhee and a road from "Star City" on the Humboldt (which is actually in Buena Vista Valley south of the Humboldt!) going north through the Owyhee to Boise. Map is very incorrect regarding northern Nevada and Southeastern Oregon. Further study needed. Explore the relationship to Williamson's map of 1866. Kearney River comes from the Dixon map of 1860, but Dixon puts the Kearney where Freyhold puts the Jordan. Much detail on the Owyhee Mines in the addenda. Bound with brown linen covered boards with title on the spine.

List No 0950.001
Note One of the earliest, and most important government maps of the Great Salt Lake area. Wheat calls this map "a major production...for the Great Salt Lake itself the map was definitive...Scientific cartography for the Territory of Utah may be said to date from the appearance of this map." It is a stunning map, large in scope, and clearly shows the genius of Charles Preuss as a cartographer. Issued in a folder with the large Stansbury "Map of a Reconnoissance between Fort Leavenworth..." Bodies of water have light blue outline color.

Note This is the Fremont/Preuss map of 1845, updated and enlarged, but only going west to the Great Salt Lake. Wheat: "the Stansbury expedition map (is) one of the most important of its decade." Wheat devotes seven pages to this map. It is a major production and is the culmination of the Fremont maps of 1843 and 1845, and the Abert map of 1846. Issued in a folder with the large Stansbury "Map of The Great Salt Lake and Adjacent Country.." With outline color.

Note House Issue, map in case. Lacks the astronomical observations that appear in the first issue by the Senate. The large map of the west is one of the most interesting and beautiful government maps of the 1840's. It filled in many of the gaps in cartographic knowledge of the west. Charles Preuss was the cartographer. Map is without color. Book is bound with full leather with "Executive Documents 2d Sess. 28th Cong." on the spine in gold.

List No 0693.018
Note The general map published with the Pacific Railroad Survey Reports. This map had earlier issues and later issues. A preliminary listed of those would be: 1855 (our #2289), 1857 (WH and AH's copies)- blank areas in eastern Oregon, fewer authorities, 1857 published with the reports, 1858 early (see Schubert);1858 late (our #2750), 1867 (our #2594). We suspect there are other states and issues, particularly in the period of 1859 to 1866. This is one of the most important maps of the West in the 1850's and 1860's and a study of its different states shows the rapid growth of topographical information from government exploration and mapping. Without color.
