Date and author estimated, not indicated in the printed materials. An unusual board game based on the "new Union Pacific Railroad." The game board shows forty five beautifully executed views of places along the Union Pacific route, starting with "Rail road depot in New York" and ending in "San Francisco, the metropolis of California." Along the way, we have, among others, views of Pittsburgh, Omaha, "surprise by savage Indians," "wild heard of buffalloes," "railroad bridge over the Platte river," Cheyenne, Green River, Humboldt Valley, "Trukee" Valley, Sierra Nevada and Sacramento. The text is titled "Trip from New-York to San Francisco by the Union Pacific Rail Road. A new illustrated Travel-game with 45 stations, 1 dy, 12 cars and 12 numbers charts." The text is written in German and English and explains the game and the views. The cover of the game box (19x24) has a lovely colored litho view of two women joining hands across the American Continent, one representing America and the other Asia. Not in any of the standard game references - rare. |

| Note |
Townsend's second collapsible globe with an internal mechanism for holding it open. The first collapsible Townsend globe was held open by an external stand - apparently no examples exist. Townsend was a school teacher in Vermont and later in California. His interest in globes was to produce a cheap globe that could be owned and used by students instead of a flat "map which, without explanation, is a false illustration, and can be understood only by a process of reasoning entirely beyond the mind of the child" (from Townsend's "Folding Globe Lessons"). This copy is presumed to be the second issue of this globe - an earlier issue has a somewhat different folder with only Townsend listed as publisher. However, it is not certain that both examples were not produced simultaneously in different cities. Both Globes are dated the same. Originally from the Welsh Collection. With a photocopy of Townsend's Folding-Globe Lessons, and an original advertising flyer for the globe. |

This was one of the first United States atlases to exclusively feature railroad lines, showing minimal topography (in this later edition more topographical features are added, earlier editions have fewer features shown ) and only showing towns on or next to the railroads lines. We find the maps most interesting and beautiful, although some might find them a bit spare. This copy was published late in 1874 and is the most complete edition. Contains maps of Washington, Wyoming, Montana, New Mexico, Arizona, Western Texas, etc. (similar to our early 1874 edition). The western United States maps are especially interesting. Full color. Bound in quarter leather dark brown and red cloth covered boards stamped with the title "Asher & Adams' new commercial and statistical alas and gazetteer of the United States." in gilt, the same title is blind stamped on the back cover. The remaining leather of the original spine reads "Asher & Adams' atlas and gazetteer of the U.S." Page numbering discontinuous. |

0103A |
| Note |
This atlas is the second atlas published in the 19th century of one of the individual states in the U.S., preceded only by Mill's Atlas of South Carolina, issued in 1825, and followed closely, also in 1829, by Greenleaf's Atlas of the State of Maine (Ristow, p96). This copy is the 1st edition, second state, actually published in 1832. Howard Welsh rescued this copy which was obviously about to be broken up and disbound. When we acquired it from his estate it was completely disbound, subsequently we had it rebound and restored. The Map of the City and County of New York is dated 2nd. ed., 1832, Haskell 725 lists this as appearing in the 1829 ed. of the Atlas. Therefore, we can presume that there are two 1829 eds., the first state with this map dated 1829 (Haskell 721) and the second state which is this copy with the 1832 map (Haskell 725). The Map of New York State is also dated 1832. All other maps are dated 1829. Full hand painted color. Bound in half leather marbled paper covered boards with "New York Atlas" stamped in gilt on the spine. |

This map may be related to the Monk/Gilpin Colorado of 1865 (see Ellis p. 76, and see our #3509) - Colton republished the Monk/Gilpin in 1866 and that was very likely the base for this map. This is one of the most attractive of the early Colorado maps - Ellis calls it "a very good map and on a large scale." The hachuring used to indicate mountains and drainage is unusual and visually distinctive. Full color by county, folded into dark brown cloth covers 15.5x9.5 with "Topographical Map Of Colorado G.W. & C.B. Colton & Co" in gilt. Prime meridians are Greenwich and Washington D.C. Issued separately in pocket map form, linen backed (High Ridge #108 in Cat 18), and in the Traveler's and Tourist's Guide Book (and Route Book) Through the United States of America and the Canadas. First edition was 1850 (Howes C623) by Colton, Howes says the guide is descended from J. Calvin Smith's Guide of 1846, the map is slightly larger scale than the Smith and larger in size, and it is clearly related. Another example of the Colton/Smith relationship - this Guide, the Western Guide, and the Large Map of the U.S. and the Canadas. This map is derived from the large wall map of the United States of America (see our #3960). The division between the two plates used to make this portion of the wall map is visible in Tenn. and N. | Note |
This volume 7 of Neptune Francois forms an extensive atlas of charts of the western coasts of North and South America, with most charts dated or updated to the 1820's. 25 charts are listed in the index, yet 36 charts are present here. This copy is from the library of the Duc d'Orleans. This issue must be later than the NMM 256, since it has 10 extra charts dated from 1823 to 1828, the latest date in NMM256 is 1822. The eight Vancouver charts appear to be original issues or restrikes from the original plates, the La Perouse charts are absolutely restrikes on newer paper, with the Mappe Monde updated in Australia to show the coastal discoveries in the south. The progression of engraving style from the La Perouse to the 1828 charts is most interesting. The charts of Mexico and South America are largely copies of the Spanish Marine charts issued in the early 1800s showing the Malaspina Expedition tracks (see W. Heckrotte's copy of the Spanish charts). Bound in full red leather covers with decorative gold border and the same titles as above stamped on the spine. |
