Full Title (Covers to) U.S. War Department Map Of The Yellowstone And Missouri Rivers And Their Tributaries explored by Capt. W.F. Raynolds Topl. Engrs. and 1st Lieut. H.E. Maynadier 10th Infy. Assistant. 1859-60. To accompany a report to the Bureau of Topographical Engineers. Lt. Col. Harman Bache in charge.
List No 6722.001
Note Date is estimated. With the note "Rec. in Mil. Div. Missouri Engineer Office. Official W.E. Merrill Maj Engn. & Brt. Col." And the date 1869 added in ink, different color. The map has been extensively updated in the headwaters region of the Yellowstone by hand, also adds several Indian Reservations and Indian areas of settlement along with the names of states and territories, all in manuscript. Folds into cover with the label "Montana Dakota" but the bottom of the label is missing. We suspect that it is similar to our Map of Kansas and Texas (2320.000) which also has Merrill's signature and on the lower part of the front label says " All Person Into Whose Hands The Map Falls Are Particularly Requested To Send All Corrections And Additions To The Chief Engineer, Mil. Div. Of The Mo., St. Louis." The person who updated this map probably deposited it with Merrill. This map uses the Raynold's Map of 1860 (but published in 1867) as the base.

List No 6732.005
Note Large and important map of India in six sheets, joined and dissected onto three sheets. It shows British controlled areas at the turn of the century. Arrowsmith published an even larger version of the map in 1816: "With the growing influence of the British in India at the end of the eighteenth century, the need for an up-to-date general map of the sub-continent grew. The first Governor-General, Warren Hastings, employed Major Rennell who, in 1779, published his famous Bengal Atlas, followed up in 1788 by his map of India. The map itself was based upon D'Anville's map of 1752, though enriched by much new material, supplied by the numerous "route surveys" carried out by the army. As these "route surveys" began to become more numerous and accurate the need for a new general map of India soon became apparent. In 1816 Aaron Arrowsmith published his Map of India in nine sheets, on a scale of sixteen miles to an inch, which was the last great general map based on route surveys. His subsequent Atlas of South India, published in 1822, was based upon the trigonometrical surveys of Colonel Lambton, filled in by the officers of the Madras Institute."

List No 6824.001
Note This little-known map of Switzerland by Joseph Edmund Woerl is an important record of the Swiss road network in the early 19th century. It is also an outstanding example of early lithographic map printing. Woerl seems to have pioneered a method of using color lithography to show roads and important places and towns - he used a red lithographic stone for a second overlay printing. Espenhorst speculates that Woerl may have used a unique combination of lithography and engraving to produce these maps - in fact plate marks are clearly seen. The quality of the lithographic work is exceptional - the lines are as fine as those resulting from engraving. Espenhorst also states that Woerl may have studied with Senefelder, the inventor of lithography. In 21 parts (19 maps 52x63, at a scale of 1:200,000, a title page and index sheet) placed in modern cardboard case 54x64, with title "Woerl Atlas der Schweiz". The title page shows many different scales and their equivalents. The maps were published by Harder from 1831 to 1835. The Bavarian cartographer Woerl compiled his maps from different maps of the time, but especially on the basis of the Atlas Suisse which was published in Aarau by Johann Heinrich Weiss and others. Woerl's Karte der Schweiz was part of the larger 48 sheet Karte von Sudwest-Deutschland und dem Alpenlande, begun in 1831 and completed in 1843. Several other extracts were taken from these 48 sheets, include Wurttemberg (12 sheets - see our copy), Bavaria (24 sheets), Tirol (12 sheets). The assembly sheet for the 48 maps and some of the Bavaria sheets are included with out Wurttemberg atlas.

Full Title (Covers to) A Topographical Description of Such Parts of North America as are Contained in the (Annexed) Map of the Middle British Colonies, in North America.
List No 6901.001
Note This work contains an updated version of Lewis Evans' important 1755 "Map of the Middle British Colonies in North America," using the original plate engraved by James Turner with revisions and adding an eastern extension to cover New England, and Pownall's "Topographical Description" which describes the areas contained in the updated map, and six important appendices of writings by explorers in the region plus parts of Evans' original essay on his 1755 edition of the map - I. The account of Capt. Anthony Van Schaick of the ground between the entrance of lake Chaplain at Crown point, and the mouth of Otter creek -- II. Captain Anthony Van Schaik's journal, 1756 -- III. Captain Hobb's account of the way from No. 4. in New Hampshire, to the mouth of Otter creek -- IV. Extracts from the journal of Captain Harry Gordon...who was sent from Fort Pitt...to Illinois, in 1766 -- V. Extract from Mr. Lewis Evans' journal. 1743 -- VI. A journal of Christopher Gist's journey. This copy of the Pownall belonged to Thomas Streeter (Streeter 826) and includes a rare 8 page prospectus for publishing the work that was printed in November, 1775. Henry Stevens ties this work directly to Evans, saying it "may be described as a new and much enlarged edition of both Evans' Map and his Analysis of 1755." Evans is considered "America's greatest eighteenth century cartographer" by Schwartz and Ehrenberg, and Pownall was hugely accomplished in pre-Revolutionary America, serving as Governor General of Massachusetts and traveling widely in the colonies in various roles in the British colonial administration. Pownall's map is considered the best updated edition of the Evans 1755 map, of the many later copies of Evans that were issued by Jefferys, Sayer, and others. In the prospectus, Pownall criticizes Jefferys' copy of Evans saying it "might as well be a map of the face of the moon."

Note Bellin was an important maker of charts for the French Depot de la Marine. He was born in Paris in 1703 and educated as an engineer. He produced many important charts and published them individually and in compilations. The Neptune Francais was published in 1753 and the Hydrographie Francaise in 1756. His largest and most comprehensive work is the Petit Atlas Maritime with 581 charts (our copy has 582, including the rare "Carte Reduite des Decouvertes des Russe Entre L'Asie et L'Amerique.") that cover the coasts and important port cities of the known world. The Petit Atlas Maritime is probably the best compilation of plans of maritime towns and harbors of its time. Bellin died in Versailles in 1772. According to Tooley, Bellin issued an earlier version of this atlas in 1763 titled Petit Atlas Francois. The Duc de Choiseul provided financial support for the publication of the atlas. J. Arrivet is listed as engraver on the chart index pages and may also have engraved the charts themselves.

(Five works bound in in one, (main map) London: Committee of the Palestine Exploration Fund, 1880, (the other maps) London Edward Stanford, 1881-2.)
List No 6930.001
Note Bound in atlas format. The "Survey of Western Palestine" covered 6000 square miles and includes the set of these 26 highly detailed maps, and 50 plates supplemented by nine volumes of extensive writings on all aspects of Palestine: Memoirs on the topography, orography, hydrography and archaeology of Galilee, Samaria and Judea (one volume each), Special Papers on topography, archaeology, manners and customs, Jerusalem, Fauna and Flora, Geology, also Arabic and English Name Lists and a complete General Index. The Survey was intended to include at a later date Eastern, Southern and Northern Palestine. In fact only one volume on Eastern Palestine was published, and has been included in a 1997 printing of the survey volumes. This copy is special for several reasons: it is likely the 3rd issue of the 26 sheet map and was printed by Edward Stanford instead of the Ordnance Survey which produced the first two issues earlier in 1880 (information from the reports of the Palestine Exploration Fund found online) and it appears that Stanford used a slightly different printing method, the background color being black instead of the brown tone found in the first two issues. And, bound with this copy are four additional maps of Palestine made by Stanford and based on the 26 sheet survey (two of the additional maps are dated 1881 and 1882 respectively, indicating that this bound volume was issued in 1882). One of the two authors of the survey, Lord Kitchener, later to be the Secretary of State for War and the highest-ranking British officer to be killed in the First World War, spent his early years in the army as a surveyor. He produced two monumental maps: this one of Palestine, on 26 sheets, and a 15-sheet map of Cyprus, published in 1885. Kitchener's Palestine survey was important: not only because it was so accurate that it is are still consulted by archaeologists and geographers, but also because the northern limit of the survey is now the border between Israel and Lebanon.

Note Bound in green and brown decorated tan colored leather covered boards. Very modest wear and staining. Second edition - the first was proof. Lavishly and beautifully embellished map emphasizing Spanish colonial power in South America. Went through many editions with various political implications over a period of decades. Sheets 1 through 7 in this copy are all second edition (sheet 8 is first edition as in all copies printed). Like the JCB copies, sheets 2 and 5 have the ocean names added in manuscript. All paper in this copy is Dutch, sheet 5 is D & C Blau, all other sheets are Pieter Van der Ley (Smith found only one sheet in all copies he examined that had a Dutch water mark) .The only other copy of this second edition is in the Biblioteca Nacional in Madrid. Outline color. Prime meridian of Tenerife is used, but others are also scaled in: of Madrid, Paris, London and Isla de Hierro (Portuguese). Two large inset maps: Puerto de Callao (Lima) and Sitio de Angostura (site of Angostura). Juan de la Cruz spent ten years collecting measurements made by explorers and colonists and incorporated in the map valuable geographical and historical news, with some references to the sources used. This is probably the most important map of South America made in the 18th century. When the eight sheets are joined together they make a huge and impressive wall map. Read Thomas Smith's article on Cruz Cano. Read Lina del Castillo's article on the map's elaborate embellishments.
