At the same time, Colton uses the Johnson 1863 map of the same area for the first time in his atlas, they must have had an agreement to switch maps. Full color. Atlas is bound in half leather dark green embossed cloth covered boards with "Johnson's New Illustrated Family Atlas Of The World With Descriptions." and a large U.S. seal with a bald eagle reading "United States Seal. Note First edition. This atlas was one of the best world atlases published in England in the second half of the 19th century. The North America map shows Colorado as a Territory - very up to date on U.S. political changes (most U.S. atlases do not show Colorado until 1862) for an English Atlas. Also shows Nevada, and a horizontal Arizona. However, the western U.S. map shows none of this -- its layout is pre-1860. Maps have a mixture of hand colored outline and printed blue color for water. Covers are half leather brown cloth covered boards with "Keith Johnston's royal atlas of modern geography" stamped in gilt on the cover, and "The Royal Atlas. Keith Johnston. W. Blackwood & Sons" on the spine.

Note A guide to accompany the revised edition No. 59 of Leahy's Hotel Guide and Railway Distance Maps of America. It lists the Hotels of the town with the number of rooms of each, their rates per day and the population of the town. It includes the name of the railroads entering the town and where the town can be found on the map. Maps of each state are opposite the State lists of towns and hotels making it easy and convenient to refer from the one to the other. The maps give the railroad distance between towns. The Guide includes the Provinces of Canada, as well as the United States. The railroad distance maps of Europe, Mexico, South and Central America ... Note This was the first atlas of Argentina. Phillips notes that this atlas accompanied three volumes of text of the same title, also published in 1873. Phillips does not note this second edition of the same date as the first, adding one map. Martin de Moussy was unable to finish the atlas because of illness and it was completed by L. Bouvet. A beautifully engraved title page precedes the full title page and reads "Atlas de la Confederation Argentine. Bachelier Lith. Gve. Sanier, del. Imp. Lemercier & Cie. Paris." Most of the maps are without color, a few are hand painted in full color. Atlas is bound in quarter leather black cloth covered boards with "Atlas de la Confederation Argentine" stamped in gold on the front, spine is embossed with title "M. De Moussy. Description de la Confederation Argentine. Atlas."

It is dated 1831 under the title - changes from the 1826 Finley issue include the appearance of Chicago, reduction of Arkansas, and the elimination of "Territory" in the title of Michigan. W. Heckrotte has a copy without the 1831 date under the title and with Mitchell's name in slightly different print. It is probably an earlier state. Full color map folded into brown leather covers 15.5x9 with "U. States" and a decorative border in gilt. Prime meridians are Washington D.C. and Greenwich. Relief shown by hachures.
