Unusual medium size map of the U.S., not seen before. This map is taken from D.G. and A.J. Johnson's "New Map of the Union," 1857 (see our #364), updated and somewhat changed. This is further evidence of the close relationship between the Johnsons and Colton in the late fifties and early sixties. Colorado is shown, as well as a horizontal Arizona, and Nevada. Interesting notations about Columbus appear in the West Indies, in the same text as on the Johnsons' v16ersion. In 1860 an earlier version of this map appeared in Carlos Butterfield's "United States and Mexican Mail Steamship Line...", dated 1859 on the map and published by Johnson and Browning (see our #3484). Full color by state. Folded into brown cloth covers 16x10.5 with "Colton's Map Of The United States, Mexico, Central America, West Indies, &c. J.H. Colton." in gilt. |

Important U.S. Railroad map, civil war references. Goldthwait did an early map of the Mississippi Valley in 1833 (see Karrow index), engraved for Johnson (large N.A. 1859) and Colton (County Map of N.A. 1864) and produced several beautiful railroad maps. Colton put out a later edition of this map (see Phillips 909). This map is extraordinary for its graphic clarity and elegance. Two inset maps show railroad routes in New England and the Mid West. The west is largely empty except for California where many towns are listed along with topographical features. Many lists of statistics are provided (showing population growth) as well as a list of the seceding southern states with dates of secession. Railroad routes are shown as single and double track, including the width of the gauge. Full color map, folded into textured brown cloth covers 14.5x9 with "Goldthwait's Map Of The United States & Canada" stamped in gilt. Relief shown by hachures. |

1st edition. 2nd edition was1865, another edition in 1869 (Karrow 1-1683). German edition published in 1864. (Karrow 1-1655). Inset of Central America, text on top of map describing British American Possessions, Time Tables, and U.S. Census for 1860. We can find no earlier edition of this map, so the "Revised Edition" is puzzling. Lubrecht lists three foreign publishers for this map: Bacon in London, Volkmar in Leipsic, and Lubrecht & Co. in Stuttgart. An edition in German is described in Karrow. Later, this map became the more elaborate 1871 "American Union Railroad Map of the United States..." by Hassis & Lubrecht, also published by D.L. Gurnsey (see our copy, WH's copy, and Heaston Cat. 19 for a reproduction). The Proposed transcontinental railroad is shown going south of Salt Lake City, Wyoming is still part of Dakota, and a Proposed Southern Pacific Railroad runs from Fort Smith to Sacramento. Full color by state. Map is dissected into 24 sections and mounted on linen. Folded into black paper covered boards 24.5x21 with "The American Continent" stamped in gilt. Relief shown by hachures. |

Very large hand colored map with detailed engraving. This does not look like the "normal" Rand McNally map - it is probably a separately made map that they acquired the rights to. This copy was sold in England by Edward Stanford and has his label on the case. Map is in four sheets, each dissected into 21 sections. With outline color by state, topography shown in brown, and railways and shipping routes in red. Sheets have marbled end papers with labels reading "North East", "North West", "South East" and "South West", all fold into a brown cloth slip case 22.5x14.5 with a label reading "Mexico. The hachuring is particularly detailed, probably influenced by Freyhold's map of 1879. A former owner has inked in some railroad routes in the west. Full color by state. This large and decorative map by Monk reflects the interest in Central America in the mid 50's (see Palmer, Wyld, Disturnell, and others) but adds the U.S. coast line from Florida to Texas, which is missing in most of the other maps of Central America. With a large inset map of the World, statistics on the Yucatan, boundary notes on Costa Rica, Historical Notes on Belize and the Mosquito Coast, and the usual abundance of Monk's decorative sailing ships. The inside cover lists this map, Monk's New American Map, and Monk's Railroad and Telegraph Map - which we have never heard of before (although Karrow does list an 1856 edition: 1-1612). Full color map, folded into stamped brown cloth covers 16x11 titled "Monk's New Map Of Central America, Cuba, Florida &c." Relief shown by hachures. |

The first great atlas of Mexico, produced by a Mexican and printed in Mexico. Sabin says only 300 copies were printed. The maps are of each province, with each surrounded by text. Phillips lists two later editions of 1886 with somewhat different titles. The only atlas of Mexico listed by Phillips that is earlier than this atlas is Humboldt's Atlas...de la Nouvelle Espagne of 1811. Has two very interesting plates at the end that relate to Aztec writing. Garcia Cubas was 26 when he published this. Strangely, then, the verso of the title page has 1846 as the copyright date (when the author was 14?). Maps hand col. with outline color. Atlas is bound in quarter leather brown marbled paper covered boards with title embossed in gold on the spine reading "Garcia y Cubas. Atlas geografico de la Republica Mexicana." |

A scarce descriptive guide to Mexico issued on the eve of the Mexican War. Not listed in any references. On the brown leather cover is gilt stamped "Mexico and Yucatan." The small full color map is, according to the publisher's statement, based on the SDUK map of Mexico. The map has an interesting note: "The road represented on the map from Matamoras to Mexico, is the one which Gen. Taylor will most probably take, should he be directed to march on the capital." The note goes on to say that Upper California has been omitted from the map because it is "improbable that the region in question will ever again be attached to Mexico."
