First edition was 1850 (Howes C623) by Colton, Howes says the guide is descended from J. Calvin Smith's Guide of 1846, the map is slightly larger scale than the Smith and larger in size, and it is clearly related. Another example of the Colton/Smith relationship - this Guide, the Western Guide, and the Large Map of the U.S. and the Canadas. This map is derived from the large wall map of the United States of America (see our #3960). The division between the two plates used to make this portion of the wall map is visible in Tenn. and N. | Note |
This is an atlas of three maps on 13 sheets: the large map of Lower Canada on ten sheets (scale 1:174,240, size 133x307), the map of Upper and Lower Canada on two sheets (scale 1:2,200,000, size 76x123), and the single sheet map of Gaspe (scale 1:506,880, size 40x48). These maps were intended to accompany Bouchette's Topographical Description of Lower Canada (see our copy). The first two maps have outline color. Atlas is bound into half leather marbled paper covered boards. The title on the atlas spine "Description Topograph du Bas Canada" may indicate that this atlas was issued to accompany the 1815 French edition of the book published in London (Sabin 6850). The large ten sheet map is extraordinary - it is over ten feet long when joined and almost five feet tall. It has five views and three large inset maps of Montreal, Quebec, and Three Rivers. The detail and graphic elegance of the large map is the equal (or perhaps the superior) of any of the contemporary maps that we have seen (and none of which are on such a large scale - the only potential candidate would be Eddy's Map of the Country Thirty Miles Round the City of New York). Of course the engraving was done by the Walker firm in London, whose resources were up to the New York and Philadelphia engravers, or better, so a comparison with American produced maps is not entirely fair. Bouchette's work as Surveyor General must have instilled in him an obsession with the accuracy and fineness of detail that one sees in these maps. |

Scarce map of Upper Canada and the Northeastern United States west to eastern Illinois. This is, for its period, one of the most detailed maps of the U.S. and Canadian border area that we have seen. Taylor lists his sources carefully, and, mysteriously, it appears that this map was his only production, other than an obscure map of the Ottawa river country (Winearls 584). We believe that this is the first large Canadian map drawn by Canadians that was engraved in America - all of its predecessors, including the early maps by Smyth, Holland, and the Bouchettes, were engraved and printed in London. Uncolored. Map is in two sheets, each dissected into 30 sections. Folds into half leather marbled paper covered boards 17x12. |

Woolworth Colton as the cartographer, publisher, copyright holder, and has ads for "G. Woolworth Colton, Geographer to the late Firm of J.H. Colton & Co..." on the inside cover paste down. Apparently the J.H. Colton firm ceased to exist briefly in 1862 and G. Woolworth Colton decided to start his own business under his own name. This curious lapse in the Colton firm is probably related to their arrangements with A.J. Johnson regarding Johnson's Family Atlas. At some point later in 1862, J.H. Colton decided to resuscitate his firm. Folded into stamped dark green cloth covers 15x10 with "G. Woolworth Colton's New Guide Map Of The United States & Canada With Railroads Counties &c" in gilt.
