Outline color by state, folded into dark gray modern cloth covers 15x10 with "Colton's Map Of The United States And The Canadas" in gilt. Issued separately in pocket map form, linen backed (High Ridge #108 in Cat 18), and in the Traveler's and Tourist's Guide Book (and Route Book) Through the United States of America and the Canadas. First edition was 1850 (Howes C623) by Colton; Howes says the guide is descended from J. Calvin Smith's Guide of 1846; the map is slightly larger scale than the Smith and larger in size, and it is clearly related. Another example of the Colton/Smith relationship - this Guide, the Western Guide, and the Large Map of the U.S. and the Canadas. This map is derived from the large wall map of the United States of America (see our #3960). The division between the two plates used to make this portion of the wall map is visible in Tenn. and N. Carolina. Prime meridians are Greenwich and Washington D.C.

Map is folded into tan card board covers 17x10.5 printed with "Rand-McNally New Official Railroad Map Of The United States And Southern Canada ... 25(cents). Rand McNally & Company, Chicago, New York." Prime meridian is Greenwich.

Note
This is an atlas of three maps on 13 sheets: the large map of Lower Canada on ten sheets (scale 1:174,240, size 133x307); the map of Upper and Lower Canada on two sheets (scale 1:2,200,000, size 76x123); and the single sheet map of Gaspe (scale 1:506,880, size 40x48). These maps were intended to accompany Bouchette's Topographical Description of Lower Canada (see our copy). The first two maps have outline color. Atlas is bound into half leather marbled paper covered boards. The title on the atlas spine "Description Topograph du Bas Canada" may indicate that this atlas was issued to accompany the 1815 French edition of the book published in London (Sabin 6850). The large ten sheet map is extraordinary - it is over ten feet long when joined and almost five feet tall. It has five views and three large inset maps of Montreal, Quebec, and Three Rivers. The detail and graphic elegance of the large map is the equal (or perhaps the superior) of any of the contemporary maps that we have seen (and none of which are on such a large scale - the only potential candidate would be Eddy's Map of the Country Thirty Miles Round the City of New York). Of course the engraving was done by the Walker firm in London, whose resources were up to the New York and Philadelphia engravers, or better, so a comparison with American produced maps is not entirely fair. Bouchette's work as Surveyor General must have instilled in him an obsession with the accuracy and fineness of detail that one sees in these maps.

Note
Scarce map of Upper Canada and the Northeastern United States west to eastern Illinois. This is, for its period, one of the most detailed maps of the U.S. and Canadian border area that we have seen. Taylor lists his sources carefully, and, mysteriously, it appears that this map was his only production, other than an obscure map of the Ottawa river country (Winearls 584). We believe that this is the first large Canadian map drawn by Canadians that was engraved in America - all of its predecessors, including the early maps by Smyth, Holland, and the Bouchettes, were engraved and printed in London. Uncolored. Map is in two sheets, each dissected into 30 sections. Folds into half leather marbled paper covered boards 17x12.

Second edition, with Karrow showing editions of 1861, 1862, 1863, 1864, 1867 and 1871. This is the only map we have seen that has G. Woolworth Colton as the cartographer, publisher, copyright holder, and has ads for "G. Woolworth Colton, Geographer to the late Firm of J.H. Colton & Co..." on the inside cover paste down. Apparently the J.H. Colton firm ceased to exist briefly in 1862 and G. Woolworth Colton decided to start his own business under his own name. This curious lapse in the Colton firm is probably related to their arrangements with A.J. Johnson regarding Johnson's Family Atlas. At some point later in 1862, J.H. Colton decided to resuscitate his firm. Folded into stamped dark green cloth covers 15x10 with "G. Woolworth Colton's New Guide Map Of The United States & Canada With Railroads Counties &c" in gilt. Outline color by state. Prime meridians are Greenwich and Washington D.C.

The text has been substantially altered and the map shows a great number of new proposed railroads compared to the 1854 map in the 1853 guide. Outline color. Covers are black stamped leather with "Mitchell's New Traveler's Guide Through The United States" and a beautiful illustration of a steam boat, bridge and train stamped in gilt.

Note
A scarce railroad map of the eastern U.S. with an untitled inset map of North America. The style is a greatly simplified cartography showing railroads and canals. At least two other versions of this map appeared in 1856: one without the inset map (Karrow 1-1609), and one with a different inset map of the City of New York (Modelski 30). Dinsmore published the American Railway Guide in the 1850's which included a smaller railway map (see Modelski 10, 16). Richard Fisher wrote for both Colton and Johnson - Statistical Gazetteer, History of the Civil War, text in the Johnson Family Atlas and Colton's General Atlas, and others. In covers of J.G. Wells, who is also listed as publisher of Karrow 1-1610. Schonberg & Co. are listed as "Acrographers" which is a form of printing we have never seen before. Map is full color by state, and folded into embossed brown cloth covers 16x10 with "New Rail Road Map Of The U. States & Canada J.G. Wells" and a decorative leaf design stamped in gilt. Relief shown by hachure.
