Note	Early state map, inaccurate yet elegant. Graphically, it is exceptionally well done. Wheat: "This was the most elaborate map of California that had yet appeared. It is beautifully designed and drawn, and includes a large number of the mining towns, though it cannot be entirely commended for accuracy." A portion of this map was published as Gibbes' New Map of the Gold Region in California, 1851, which was also issued in the Stockton Directory and Emigrant's Guide to the Southern Mines, Stockton, 1852 (Rocq 12978). Full color by county, map is folded into dark green cloth covers 18x10.5 with "Gibbes' Map Of The State Of California" stamped in gilt. Sherman and Smith of New York is also listed as Publisher.

Note	Very late date for this map. Many changes in the built area of the city, when comparing this to the 1881 and 1873 issues. Concentric circles are added showing distances from the Ferry Building, and many subdivisions have been added in the southern and western parts of the city. This map shows the downtown filled in solid with buildings, and new development pushing outward. The index is unchanged from the 1881 edition. The internal development of Golden Gate Park has been extended all the way to the ocean. With the signature of a real estate agent who appears to have located some lots for his client in red on the map. Map is folded into light blue card board covers 18x11.5 with "Bancroft's Map Of San Francisco. The Bancroft Company Booksellers And Stationers San Francisco, Cal. 25 Cents" printed in black.

Note	Norris: "Very scarce railroad map of San Francisco." Streeter purchased the Norris copy, which was not in as good condition as this copy. Not in any of the standard references. Red circles emanate from City Hall showing distances at 1/4 mile intervals. Four railroads are identified. The map goes west to Divisadero and south to Alta Street. On the inside front cover is an ad for the Pacific Map Depot, A. Gensoul, 511 Montgomery Street. Various maps, including Mining maps are listed for sale. The front of the dark green cloth covers 9.5x8 have a printed purple label "Railroad Pocket Map Of The City Of San Francisco. Pacific Map Depot. San Francisco, Cal." A later issue was published in 1866 by Gensoul, a similar map was used in various editions of the San Francisco Municipal Reports in the 1860's.
