Note
Folds into covers with label "1858-1861 Importation du Coton." Robinson, no.30. Signed by Minard. "The map entitled 'Carte... des quantités de coton en laine importés en Europe en 1858 et 1861' shows two flow-maps of the Atlantic trade in wool and cotton, three years apart. The time period covers the beginning of the American Civil War, which was sparked by the slavery policies of the Lincoln presidency. By January 1861, seven of the southern states had seceded to form the Confederacy. The war between the Confederacy and the states who remained in the Union lasted until 1865, and had a devastating effect on American exports. The seven separatist states are marked on both maps. A line graph in the upper right corner shows the yearly export amounts of wool and cotton for America (blue). There is a sharp drop in exports from 1860, when the issues provoking the Civil War came to prominence. Comparing the two maps gives an even clearer picture of the change; by 1861 the amount of cotton and wool imported into Britain from the East Indies (yellow) had almost tripled, whereas the amount imported from America (blue) had only risen by a paltry 16,000 tons. Britain was then re-exporting the excess to other European countries (pink), at a rate three times higher than before the start of the Civil War." (Crouch).

Note
Early map of battle area, copyright 1855. Stephenson is probably wrong in dating this as 1863. We date it as 1861 because it is earlier than the copy we have that is entered in 1862 (which copy Stephenson misdates as entered in 1852). Folded into dark green textured cloth covers 14.5x9.5 with the title "Map Of The Seat Of War In Virginia, Maryland, &c. J.H. Colton." in gilt. Prime meridian is Washington D.C.

Note
Important U.S. Railroad map; civil war references. Goldthwait did an early map of the Mississippi Valley in 1833 (see Karrow index), engraved for Johnson (large N.A. 1859) and Colton (County Map of N.A. 1864) and produced several beautiful railroad maps. Colton put out a later edition of this map (see Phillips 909). This map is extraordinary for its graphic clarity and elegance. Two inset maps show railroad routes in New England and the Mid West. The west is largely empty except for California where many towns are listed along with topographical features. Many lists of statistics are provided (showing population growth) as well as a list of the seceding southern states with dates of secession. Railroad routes are shown as single and double track, including the width of the gauge. Full color map, folded into textured brown cloth covers 14.5x9 with "Goldthwait's Map Of The United States & Canada" stamped in gilt. Relief shown by hachures.

Note
First issued in 1861, then 1862, and last issued in 1863. Taken from Boye's map of 1828 and extensively revised. Another issue of 1862 has a strange note regarding the Burnett House (a hotel) in Cincinnati. "This is the only map used to plan campaigns in Virginia by Gen. McClellan. The brown cloth covers 19x13 (with tie remnants) are titled in gold "Lloyd's $100,000 Topographical Map of Virginia. Used by the War Department." A promotional broadside was put out early in 1861 announcing the first issue of this map and calling it "the only real good map ever made in America" (see our copy with "Lloyd's Map of the Southern States" - Newspaper format). Full color by county. Map is mounted on linen and undissected. Covers also West Virginia.

Note
Large and detailed map in two sheets of the Confederacy, taken from the southern portion of the J. Calvin Smith Map of the Untied States and the Canadas, first issued in 1843, here updated to 1864. The copyright date is 1863, but Colton issued the map in 1861 and 1862; Stephenson shows the 1862 edition by Bacon of London (who issued many of Colton's Civil War maps). An inset map of the United States shows the proposed railroad routes to the Pacific Ocean. Tables list information from the U.S. Census of 1860. Map is in full color by county, and folded into beautifully stamped brown cloth covers 21x13 with clover leaf design and title "Colton's Map Of The Southern States, Showing The Counties & Railroads, Cities, Towns, Railroad Stations, &c. All eight maps are derived and enlarged from an 1865 "Military Map of Middle Tennessee and parts of East Tennessee..." by C.S. Mergell (LC Civil War maps, 393) which was published in 1874. Each map says "Positions of the Troops located in 1891." Covers are half leather, red cloth covered boards with label reading "The Middle Tennessee and Chattanooga Campaign of 1863 including the Battle of Chickamauga." These maps are of great interest to historians of these battles because the level of detail regarding troop positions, etc. is very good. With printed color. Maps printed by Julius Bien & Co.

Highly detailed, large scale map of the state issued "with linen backs for Army Officers" (this copy without linen). At the eastern border with Tennessee is a printed note next to a railroad line: "Military Rail Road propos: by the President in his last message to connect Danville, Ky with Knoxville, Ten." This has the usual idiosyncratic Lloyd ads, testimonials from Military authorities, and disparagements of competitor H.H. Lloyd. Oddly, folded into stamped dark brown cloth Colton covers 16x10 saying "Map of Kentucky - G.W. & C.B. Colton" in gilt, apparently as issued. Second edition, first edition being 1862. This is the same as our other copy except that the extensive coal fields in Eastern and Western Kentucky have been manuscript colored in gray wash, carefully delineated. David Owen published maps showing the Kentucky coal fields in 1852 and 1853 and they may have been the source of the information. The Kentucky coal fields were considered a strategic asset by the North in the Civil War. Coal mining in these areas began in earnest in the 1870's with the expansion of the railroads. This copy is folded into plain dark brown cloth covers 15x10, without the Colton imprint found in our other copy. Full color by county.
