This large and decorative map by Monk reflects the interest in Central America in the mid 50's (see Palmer, Wyld, Disturnell, and others) but adds the U.S. coast line from Florida to Texas, which is missing in most of the other maps of Central America. With a large inset map of the World, statistics on the Yucatan, boundary notes on Costa Rica, Historical Notes on Belize and the Mosquito Coast, and the usual abundance of Monk's decorative sailing ships. The inside cover lists this map, Monk's New American Map, and Monk's Railroad and Telegraph Map - which we have never heard of before (although Karrow does list an 1856 edition: 1-1612). Full color map, folded into stamped brown cloth covers 16x11 titled "Monk's New Map Of Central America, Cuba, Florida &c." Relief shown by hachures. |

Colton took over the publishing of this map from Johnson in 1849. This is a later Colton issue. Many updates have been made in North America, the Arctic, Africa, and elsewhere. The journey of a Frenchman around the world in 1854 to 1857 is shown in manuscript with interesting notes on the travel. Two stickers on the outside of the case are French in origin, further indicating that the map was most likely purchased in Paris by the Frenchman at the end of his journey in 1857 - showing that Colton was selling his maps in Europe at that time and that his maps were competitive with European maps - at least our traveler thought so. See our 1847 first edition by Johnson. Full color map with silk edging, dissected into 20 sections. Folds into half leather brown cloth covered boards 38x41 with ties, titled "Colton's World. New-York" stamped in gilt. |

These may be emigrant routes or they may be dividing the Territory into districts. In embossed blue cloth covers 15x9 with title "Ream's Sectional Map Of Nebraska E. Mendenhall" in gold, inside front cover has an ad for J.H. Colton's maps and atlases. Full color by county. |

Streeter also says "This is an early and good large scale map of eastern Nebraska." Map is full color by county, folded into mauve cloth covers 15x9 with "Wells' New Sectional Map Of Nebraska" and floral design stamped in gilt. Prime meridians are Greenwich and Washington D.C. |
