Note A late New York imprint of Blanchard's. Blanchard went to Chicago in 1854, so this map (entered in New York by Blanchard in 1854) must have been one of his last before the move. It is a wonderful example of a hand colored wax engraved map - up to date in showing Kansas and Nebraska Territories, and decorative with an eagle cartouche, vignettes of ships and steam engines, and a vine border. Full color. Folded into stamped olive green leather covers 14.5x9 with "Ranney's New Map Of The United States" stamped in bronze.

Note First edition. The cartography is elegant and understated. The eighteen maps and text comprise a general atlas of North America, with special emphasis on Texas and California. The Texas map shows in colored outline the lands granted to the Adelsverein and has the post road from Indianola to New Braunfels marked in red. The map of Oregon, California, Utah, New Mexico, etc. shows the gold regions in California and has an inset map of San Francisco Bay. There is also a striking separate map of San Francisco Bay titled "Bai San Francisco und Vereinigung des Sacramento mit dem San Joaquin." It has a lovely inset view of San Francisco and shows the routes by river to Sacramento and San Joaquin. Also issued under the title of "Kartenwerk zu dr. Karl Andree's Nord-Amerika," see P1231. Note 1st edition 1849, last 1857. Shows southern part of the state. Includes a profile of the Milwaukee and Mississippi Railroad. The map is very detailed and large scale (6 miles = 1 inch) and is the first map we have seen that shows plank roads: several emanate from Milwaukee and Sheboygan and proceed many miles into the interior of the state. Lapham also made a map of Wisconsin in 1846 (see Streeter 3867). Full color by county and folded into patterned brown cloth covers 20x12 stamped with "Lapham's Map Of Wisconsin" in gold.

Note Not listed by Haskell, but similar to 1005, on the same scale. Probably one of Dripps' first New York City pocket maps. Haskell lists none that are before 1854, only Dripps' larger wall maps of the city, the first of which was published in 1851. Also similar to Haskell 1010 of 1855 - same scale (1 inch = 1800 feet) and size but with the title changed to "Map of the Cities of New York, Brooklyn & Jersey City". All three of these maps are from the same mother map. Map is folded into black stamped cloth covers 13x9 with "Dripps' Map Of New York." in gilt.

Note The second edition of this map, the first being 1853. Folded into stamped black covers 12.5x8.5 with "Map Of California J.H. Colton" stamped in gilt. The copyright date is 1853. This was Thomas Streeter's copy, with his note on the verso: "This is Wheat 254 who only locates it in Capron's History of California." Although the Capron version is the same map, the Capron's title differs in having the 1854 date directly under the word "California;" in this version, the date is directly under the line showing Colton as publisher with his address. There is also a "Census of California" printed on the verso. This map, updated from time to time, appeared in many editions of Colton's American Atlas, Atlas of the World, and General Atlas. In this earlier form, it was part of Colton's series of "Travelling Maps" that eventually were incorporated into his atlases. The 1853 edition has "Nevada" for Nevada City, the 1854 edition has "Nevada City." Prime meridians are greenwich and Washington D.C. Relief shown by hachures.

Wheat states that map was not yet ready in March 1854 but does not give reason. However, Eddy as Surveyor General states in his report dated Dec. 15, 1853 that he has received a few copies of the map and more were soon expected. My copy is signed by Eddy on verso of cover.
