Note
French marine atlas of the eastern oceans, updated to 1810 using French admiralty charts to provide a full working atlas for officers navigating towards the east, with routes to the Red Sea, coasts of India, China, northern parts of Indonesia and South-East Asia. Atlas contains 69 maps, many double-page, bound in large nineteenth-century quarter calf and green papered boards, with "D'Apres - Hydrographie Francaise. 469 A 557", in gilt on spine. D'Apres de Mannevillette published the first edition of the Neptune Oriental in 1745, with 22 charts, as being superior to all previous maps of Southeast Asian coasts (Suarez p.238). Thirty years later, in 1775, he published a second edition, completely revised and greatly increased. This 1810 edition was published with 69 maps from three different sources: 46 maps derive from the 1775 edition of the Neptune Oriental; 6 maps are added from a separately published supplement of 1781; and 17 French admiralty charts are added, based chiefly on the work of d'Apres de Mannevillette, but many of them post dating his death and most of them updated with recent surveys and discoveries . This is the latest dated reference in the charts, suggesting a date of publication of around 1810. Despite their different sources, the maps are similar in appearance and printing, have the insignia of the Depot Generale de la Marine and some are priced at 1-3 francs. Most of the charts are engraved by De la Haye.

Outline color. Title page and index in French; maps in Dutch. Goos (1616-1675) was one of the leading engravers of the age, producing work for everyone from the house of Visscher to John Speed. His father, Abraham, worked with Henricus Hondius. After the success of both Willem Blaeu and Jacob Colom's pilot-books in the early seventeenth century, a host of imitators appeared, who mainly reworked the information available in existing books. Like many of his contemporaries, Goos bought, borrowed, and copied from his colleagues, and neither the texts nor the charts in his atlas are unique products of his work, but rather derived from many sources. It is unlikely that this atlas was used at sea given its fine coloring and engraving. Instead, it was probably used on land by business people and those who could afford to have it in their libraries.

Note
This volume 7 of Neptune Francois forms an extensive atlas of charts of the western coasts of North and South America, with most charts dated or updated to the 1820's. 25 charts are listed in the index, yet 36 charts are present here. This copy is from the library of the Duc d'Orleans. This issue must be later than the NMM 256, since it has 10 extra charts dated from 1823 to 1828; the latest date in NMM256 is 1822. The eight Vancouver charts appear to be original issues or restrikes from the original plates; the La Perouse charts are absolutely restrikes on newer paper, with the Mappe Monde updated in Australia to show the coastal discoveries in the south. The progression of engraving style from the La Perouse to the 1828 charts is most interesting. The charts of Mexico and South America are largely copies of the Spanish Marine charts issued in the early 1800s showing the Malaspina Expedition tracks (see W. Heckrotte's copy of the Spanish charts). Bound in full red leather covers with decorative gold border and the same titles as above stamped on the spine.

From J.F. Letenneur: "Exceptional onboard document of this rare and fabulous maritime atlas, a masterpiece by the greatest French hydrographer of the 18th century, with maps of all the coastlines known at the time. Bound with the coat of arms of the King of France, the atlas was taken by the English aboard the frigate la Nymphe, off the coasts of Ushant August 10, 1780, during one of the naval battles of the American War of Independence which took place on European waters. In the context of the war at the end of the 18th century, and of the rivalry between the French and British Navy, maritime atlases, were strategic tools, and this “Hydrographie Françoise” more so than any other, because its purpose was to provide the best maritime charts for the French ships that were fighting on the American side against the British. (The handwritten captions throughout most of the atlas are prices for individual maps and all include the same mention: “for sailors”). These atlases were not the kind to be kept in a library, but precious tools, based on the observations of the travelers and continuously improved upon, as reflect in the present copy. It was bound with the engraved title page of the edition of 1737-1765, but the index includes maps printed after 1765 (until 1772), and the copy was augmented by six maps that do not appear in the index (until 1776), as well as 14 pages of text from the Versailles edition of 1773. The later maps are signed by Verdun de la Crenne and were done during the campaigns of the Flore (1771-1772) and of the Isis led by Fleurieu in 1768-1769. The captions explain that the maps were created using the latest technology of the day that could measure longitude (maritime clocks)." (Continued in the Pub Note field).

Bellin was an important maker of charts for the French Depot de la Marine. He was born in Paris in 1703 and educated as an engineer. He produced many important charts and published them individually and in compilations. The Neptune Francais was published in 1753 and the Hydrographie Francaise in 1756. His largest and most comprehensive work is the Petit Atlas Maritime with 581 charts (our copy has 582, including the rare "Carte Reduite des Decouvertes des Russe Entre L'Asie et L'Amerique.") that cover the coasts and important port cities of the known world. The Petit Atlas Maritime is probably the best compilation of plans of maritime towns and harbors of its time. Bellin died in Versailles in 1772. According to Tooley, Bellin issued an earlier version of this atlas in 1763 titled Petit Atlas Francois. The Duc de Choiseul provided financial support for the publication of the atlas. J. Arrivet is listed as engraver on the chart index pages and may also have engraved the charts themselves.
