Note A rare Spanish chart derived from the voyage of Malaspina and drawn by Felipe Bauza who accompanied Malaspina and was his chief chart maker. The track of Malaspina's ships are shown, as are the triangulation experiments of La Condamine for the measurement of a degree of meridian in 1744. We have the French edition of this chart, published in 1821. Most of the Spanish charts were published as atlases (see P4155) with different makeup, and separately. Note This is a reissue in Mexico City of the 1825 Madrid issue by the Spanish Direccion de Hydrographia. The French also issued a copy of the Madrid edition in 1826 (see our copy). Apparently, the Mexican Republic produced a large number of charts in 1825, copied from Spanish charts (see also the 1825 "Carta General...el grande Oceano que separa el Continente Americano del Asiatico..."). Inset charts are titled: Plano del Puerto Del Guaimas, Plano De La Bahia De La Paz, and Plano del Puerto De Pichilingue. Printed without color. Relief shown by hachures and depth by soundings

Note This chart should be viewed with Blunt's North Atlantic chart of 1832/35 and the two sheet Norie Chart of the Pacific Ocean, 1825/36. The four sheets were owned and used for many whaling trips by an American captain out of New York in the 1840's and 50's and are marked with his ships' tracks and numerous whale sightings. Blunt's charts of the North and South Atlantic are not easily found and Guthorn only mentions some earlier, larger scale coastal charts found in Blunt's 1830 atlas of charts of the North and South Atlantic Oceans (P3661).
