Civil War map - Confederacy green, North red, border states yellow. A pasted down sheet in the bottom margin explains the color coding and gives population statistics for the three regions. There is an ad for "Colton's...Complete Series of War Maps" on the verso of the cover and a pasted down list of Union and Confederate Political and Military leaders on the verso of the map. The map was sold in London by Sampson Low, Son & Co., by arrangement with Colton. All the prices quoted for Colton's maps on the paste down are in pounds. There was great demand in England for maps of the American Civil War, and Colton exploited it by providing his maps to English map sellers. W.H. has an identical copy of this map sold by Crutchly. Stanford also sold this map under his imprint. Full color. Dissected into 32 sections. Folds into dark green cloth covers 23x14.5 with a green paper label reading "Colton's Map Of Thr (sic) The United States Of America And The Canadas." |

There is a quote from Stansbury regarding the desert outside of Salt Lake City (a bit out of date, but shows attention to detail). The map makers certainly used the most current U.S. government maps as sources. On the verso is the label of Lanee, successor of Longuet, a Paris map seller, with Etats Unis in pen. Full color by state. Map is dissected into 40 sections, and edged and backed with linen. Large map of the United States based on the Arrowsmith/Tardieu maps of the same period, with a similar "Falls of Niagara" cartouche. Engraved by Amos Doolittle. Interestingly, credit for the cartouche is given to Tardieu, who copied it from Arrowsmith (perhaps evidence of a prejudice against the British from the War of 1812?). This map is far superior to either the Arrowsmith or Tardieu maps: in the west it incorporates both of Pike's maps of the Upper Mississippi and the western tributaries of the Mississippi and the Missouri, east of the Mississippi, it uses much from the Bradley "Postal" map of the United States of 1804/1812, including public survey lines, county formations, township boundaries, roads, etc. There are two very interesting inset maps and a commentary on ancient fortifications along the Ohio River. This highly detailed and accurate map must be one of the best of its period. Outline color by states. Maps is dissected into 35 sections and folds into marbled paper end sheet, then into a new gray cloth folding case 28x23 with "United States Shelton And Kensett 1816" stamped in gilt on the spine. |
