Full Title (Covers to) U.S. War Department Map Of The Yellowstone And Missouri Rivers And Their Tributaries explored by Capt. W.F. Raynolds Topl. Engrs. and 1st Lieut. H.E. Maynadier 10th Infy. Assistant. 1859-60. To accompany a report to the Bureau of Topographical Engineers. Lt. Col. Harman Bache in charge.
List No 6722.001
Note Date is estimated. With the note "Rec. in Mil. Div. Missouri Engineer Office. Official W.E. Merrill Maj Engn. & Brt. Col." And the date 1869 added in ink, different color. The map has been extensively updated in the headwaters region of the Yellowstone by hand, also adds several Indian Reservations and Indian areas of settlement along with the names of states and territories, all in manuscript. Folds into cover with the label "Montana Dakota" but the bottom of the label is missing. We suspect that it is similar to our Map of Kansas and Texas (2320.000) which also has Merrill's signature and on the lower part of the front label says " All Person Into Whose Hands The Map Falls Are Particularly Requested To Send All Corrections And Additions To The Chief Engineer, Mil. Div. Of The Mo., St. Louis." The person who updated this map probably deposited it with Merrill. This map uses the Raynold's Map of 1860 (but published in 1867) as the base.

Note Large and important map of India in six sheets, joined and dissected onto three sheets. It shows British controlled areas at the turn of the century. Arrowsmith published an even larger version of the map in 1816: "With the growing influence of the British in India at the end of the eighteenth century, the need for an up-to-date general map of the sub-continent grew. The first Governor-General, Warren Hastings, employed Major Rennell who, in 1779, published his famous Bengal Atlas, followed up in 1788 by his map of India. The map itself was based upon D'Anville's map of 1752, though enriched by much new material, supplied by the numerous "route surveys" carried out by the army. As these "route surveys" began to become more numerous and accurate the need for a new general map of India soon became apparent. In 1816 Aaron Arrowsmith published his Map of India in nine sheets, on a scale of sixteen miles to an inch, which was the last great general map based on route surveys. His subsequent Atlas of South India, published in 1822, was based upon the trigonometrical surveys of Colonel Lambton, filled in by the officers of the Madras Institute."

Jeffers, Isthums of Tehuantepec as surveyed for the proposed railroad, by Col. Hughes, Tract of the proposed Interoceanic Canal of the Rio Atrato surveyed in 1854 by W. Kennish of New York.
List No 6818.001
Note Color map with 5 insets, dissected and mounted on linen folded to 24 x 14, with original booksellers plate and stamp on frontice identifying E Andriveau-Goujon as the original seller of the map. Extremely rare arge format map of Central America, prepared during one of the most fascinating periods in American History, during whch time a number of Foreign and Domestic powers fought and schemed for control of the region. Kiepert's map was one of the most detailed and important maps of Central America. The present example of the map was apparently utilized by a contemporary owner to track the various French, English and American proposals for canals crossing Central America. The annotations on this map are relatively confusing, but suggest knowledge of various proposals for constructing canals across Central America, including Pr. Napoleon, Pr. Belly, Pr. Garella, Pr. Darien and Pr. Anlgai? Pr. Napoleon would refer to the proposal favored by Napoleon III to construct a crossing through Nicaragua. During this time, Napoleon III and Maximillian were actively proposing a Central American Alliance to control commerce and transit across the Isthmus and to block American private and commercial efforts to control the region. Napoleon III was known to favor a series of canals through Lake Nicaragua. Includes explanation of Spanish words, text, and notation by H. Kiepert, Berlin august 1857. Relief shown by hachures.
