Drawn from the Surveys taken by Mr. Geo. Gauld, and others, the New Spanish Charts, &c. and adjusted from recent Observations, By J. Foss Dessiou, Master of the Royal Navy. Approved by the Chart Committee of the Admiralty. London, Published by W. Faden ... Charing Cross, June 4, 1808. Engraved by J. Tyrer, Chapel St. Pentonville. (inset) Chart Of The Virgin Islands. (inset) Chart Of The Coast Of Biruquete, Panama & Veragua, From Point Solano To Point Burica. |

| Note |
With two inset charts. This is a highly detailed general chart of the West Indies that is similar in scope and size to Arrowsmith's chart of the same area, but Dessiou's chart gives more detail to the coast lines, harbors, water depths, currents and less detail of the inland areas. We can find no specific reference to this wonderful chart, other than Tooley's Dictionary. Dessiou is listed in the National Maritime Museum Catalog as the author of a London edition of Le Petit Neptune Francais, also published by Faden. Scarce. Map is dissected into 40 sections, and mounted and edged with linen. Outline color. The map has a paste down label on the end sheet reading "Sold by Wm. Faden, Geographer to the King, Charing Cross". Folds into a new blue cloth folding case 32.5x21 with "Chart Of The West Indies J. Foss Dessiou 1808" stamped in gilt on the spine. |

| Note |
With 48 inch spheres, this may be one of the largest World Maps produced in the early 1800's. Arrowsmith's Map of the World on a Globular Projection had 36 inch spheres and was last published in 1814. Gardner's map is fairly up to date in the American Northwest, less so in the plains area. He probably used Wyld's and Arrowsmith's maps of North America as sources. Not in Phillips or Wheat. British Museum World catalog lists this edition and an 1837 edition. The drawing and engraving of this map is very elegant and spare. In eight sheets, dissected into 6 sections each, and mounted on linen with dark green silk edging. Outline color. Folds into a new gray cloth folding case 36x23 with "Western And Eastern Hemispheres J. Gardner 1825" stamped in gold on the spine. |

The 1st ed. of this map, here published as a complete chart of six sheets joined, dissected into 16 sections and folded into Jeffery's original case with a printed label: "Bought of Thomas Jefferys Engraver..." Both map and case are preserved in a new half cloth blue marbled paper book-like case 36x31 with "Green And Jefferys. Chart of North and South America. 1753." stamped in gilt on a leather label on the spine. "This is one of the most important American maps of the period, the first to label Behring's Straits, and the most accurate of the time in establishing more correct placements of the coasts of North and South America and Northeastern Asia. The map is extensively annotated by Green to show the differences of latitude and longitude between his placements on the map and other cartographers, notably Bellin, D'Anville, Brouckner, Popple, and especially DeLisle and Buache in their claims of new discoveries on the American Northwest coast. Jefferys also published Green's "Remarks, In Support of the New Chart of North and South America, in six sheets" which further detail Green's attack on DeLisle's cartography and French claims to the American Northwest. The six sheets of this map are also found bound individually with the text, as in Streeter 3453. Our copy has a printed paste down label in the lower corner of sheet six that explains the color code used to distinguish the different claims of the British, French, etc. Stevens & Tree list several later issues of this chart, including those that appear in Jeffery's American Atlas of 1775. Outline color. |

Covers to map, and cover and title page of index. The seventh edition. Michigan peninsula has been substantially redrawn, the profiles in the lower left corner of the map have been eliminated to reveal a good bit of Republican Texas, Wisconsin and Iowa are shown, Missouri is enlarged in the northwestern corner, and new counties are added in most of the settling states. This is a major revision of the map. There is added a new key index system of numbers (and letters for Texas) to go with an attached "Alphabetical Index to the Four Sheet Map of The United States" (see our #4846). The index is bound in patterned tan cloth covered boards 18.5x11 with a label reading "Index Of Places, Contained On Tanner's Map Of The United States." Most copies of this map are either colored in outline or in full color by state, this copy is in full color by county - the only such example we have seen. Streeter Texas 1232 is the 1836 edition of this map, which apparently shows Texas in much the same form and includes the separate index volume. Map is edged in green cloth, dissected into 60 sections and mounted on linen. Folds with marbled end sheets into the original half leather red cloth covers 22x17 with ties, title on the spine is stamped in gold and reads "Map Of The United States With Index 1839." |

Vance published the upper and western part of this map in 1823 (see Streeter 3818). Dey enlarged it in 1824 and 1825 by adding an eastern portion, taking the state to its eastern boundary with New England, and also adding a lower section that includes a "Geological Profile Extending from the Atlantic to Lake Erie" (which shows the Erie Canal) and four views of the complete Erie Canal. On the main map is a profile of the western and middle sections of the Erie Canal and tables of statistics and geological remarks. The whole production is a celebration of the recently completed Erie Canal. Streeter calls the 1823 issue a "fine large scale colored map." Full color by county. Map has silk edging and is dissected into 36 sections. Folds with marbled paper end sheets, and lies loosely in quarter leather marbled paper covered boards 30x17 with leather ties, "Dey's Improved Map Of N. York" is stamped in gilt on the spine. First edition. This map is an extensive revision and redrawing on the same scale of Bouchette's 1831 map of Upper and Lower Canada (see our #4436). The map is extended east to include all of Nova Scotia and further north to include Anticosti Island. New inset maps are added of Environs of Montreal, Lake Superior, and the Niagara District, and the other insets of Newfoundland and British North America are thoroughly revised. The changes to the U.S./Canadian boundaries in Oregon (1846) and Maine (1842) are shown, as well as the first three, short Canadian railways (compared to a large number shown underway in the U.S.). In addition, there are many other revisions to the main map, well documented by Winearls. Copyrights are given for Canada and New York. NMM 479 is a folio atlas version of the six sheets of this map issued in 1853. Winearls lists two later editions of the map in 1852 and 1853. To us, the most interesting aspect of this edition is the fact it was engraved and printed in New York by Sherman and Smith, rather than in London by J. & C. Walker and James Wyld as with the 1831 edition. The style is very definitely "New York" - bold and visually striking. This is the second large Canadian map drawn by Canadians that was engraved in America - after the map of the Canadas by David Taylor, 1834 (see our #4691). It is a most beautiful and rare map. Full color by county. Map is dissected into three sheets of 16 sections each. Map has silk edging, and folds with green plain end sheets into a burgundy leather slip case with "Bouchette's Map Of British North America 1846." stamped in gold. |

An unusual very large scale map of the center oil region (the largest scale we have seen) made by the photographic process. Privately produced, this map was printed during the hiatus between the First Geological Survey of Pennsylvania ending in 1858, (see our (No. 4120) Henry Darwin Rogers map) and the beginning of the Second Geological Survey in 1874. Henry Wrigley was a civil engineer active in the oil region who self published a series of five oil region maps by the photographic process, on the map he states "By this means (photography) every one can be kept constantly advised of the progress of all developments and possess the information desired at the time he most needs it." Wrigley goes on to say that the most active sections of the map will be updated every three months with "fresh plates." Subscribers will receive the updated sections as they are issued. "As the expense of publishing the work by photographing is very great, and as the work is local, the cost of the maps will be necessarily much greater than heretofore." Each of the large scale maps was $100, and $150 if the buyer wanted the updates - a huge amount in those times, but then this was probably only purchased by those who gambled in the high stakes game of oil development. Photography was used in the Civil War for maps (see our examples) but this is the only instance of its use in the commercial map trade that we have seen. Phillips lists three later Wrigley maps that were lithographed, indicated that this unusual scheme was not long lived. Map is without color. Dissected in 28 sections. Folds into brown leather end sheets 34x26 with "Centre Oil Region From Oil City To Parker's Landing, By Henry E. Wrigley, Civil Engineer, Titusville, Pa.", map lies in a new brown cloth folding case with "Map Of The Centre Oil Region Henry E. Wrigley 1871" stamped in gold on the spine. |

| Note |
This immense, large scale map at first appears to be manuscript, entirely hand drawn. Dissected into 35 sections and mounted on linen. Upon closer inspection, it proves to be a lithograph of a hand drawn field map, with several large sections filled in or corrected in manuscript and with the waterways colored blue. It is centered on the area around Suffolk, Virginia, extending north and east to Fort Monroe, Hampton Roads and Norfolk, west to Franklin, Zuni and the Blackwater River, and south to about nine miles south of the North Carolina border. It was probably hand drawn and lithographed for immediate field use (note the title says "Traced by Lieut. Ch. Worret") with a very small press run, and corrected and updated as needed. There is a great deal of local information shown: the names of all property owners and their farms and buildings, railroads, rivers and small streams, the large Dismal Swamp, fortifications, roads and paths and distances thereon, "old Rebl. camp," "Rebl camp," "Marmaduke Ellis (Deserter)," "Negroes," and more. A "Note" at the top right corner gives the sources of the map: "Coast lines by U.S. Coast Survey" and then a list of surveys by Maj Wetterall, Maj. Stratton, 1st Lieut. James, 1st Lieut. Ch. Worrett, Lt. Soederquist, and Geo. Kayser, that were used in the construct of this map. Below the Note is the manuscript signature of "Lieut. James Ch Engr. Suffolk" and a manuscript presentation of the map "To Brig. Gen Terry with compliments of 1st Lt. C.H. James Act. Chief Engineer Maj. Gen Pecks Staff." We have dated the map (1863) based on the Soederquist Map of Suffolk & vicinity (Stephenson 661) which Stephenson dates (1863). Soederquist's map is on the same scale as this map, and is most likely a companion map to the Soederquist map of Norfolk & Vicinity that is listed in the "Note" as a source for this map. This is the first year that Colton published this map. Iowa is now fully developed with counties, and there is major railroad growth in Indiana and Illinois, among other changes from the 1850 edition. This is probably the late 1852 issue - Karrow 1-1578 is the same map without Colton's name in the title, indicating that Colton took over publishing the map later in the year. Full color by county. Map is dissected into 36 sections, mounted on linen. Folds into marbled end sheets and a new black cloth folding case 36x30 with "Colton's Map Of The United States J. With insets of the West Indies and a Statistical Table. This map has the distinction of being the first large scale detailed map made in the U.S. that showed the entire country from the Atlantic to the Pacific. This copy is an early state of the first edition -this is Martin's third state of the first edition and Ristow's fourth state (Ristow discovered a town and trail added in Ohio - Adelphi - making for a sub state of Martin's third state). The first state was an incomplete proof copy, making this the second/third state of the completed copy. The differences between this and the first complete state are small: Mansfield, Wooster, and Adelphi (and a trail from Adelphi to Athens and Chillicothe) added in Ohio, and "Vevay or" added before "Swiss Vineyards" in southeastern Indiana. Martin and Ristow identify seven states of the 1816 edition. Melish published new editions in 1818 (five states), 1819 (two states), 1820 (eight states), 1822 (two states), and 1823 (one state) for a total of twenty five different issues. Notwithstanding the many issues, the map has become extremely rare. A book accompanied the map (though issued separately) titled "A Geographical Description of the United States..." (see our #2424). Outline color by state or territory. This copy is dissected into 40 sections, backed with linen, and edged in brown cloth. It folds with marbled end sheets into new blue cloth folding boards and slip case 24.5x16.5 with leather label on spine reading "Melish. Map Of The United States. 1816" in gold. |

This is an unusual survivor - in about 1854 someone cut out the Northwestern one third of John Melish's large Map of the United States (1823 edition) and updated it to show the states, territories and proposed territories of that period, notably Kansas and Nebraska but no Gadsden Purchase, and Shoshone and Dakota (which are usually seen on circa 1858-59 maps). The new boundaries are hand colored with white past down labels for names of states and territories. It might have been used as a school map in the west - we found it in a small town in the California gold country. This portion is dissected into 15 sections mounted on linen with silk edging, and folds down to 23x15. |

This is the fourth edition of the 1834 Brue map showing Jedidiah Smith's routes in the west. Although Picquet says this 1839 edition is augmented from the 1834, I can find no changes between the two. Wheat calls the 1834 edition "one of the foundation stones of western mapping history." Jedidiah Smith's geography in the Great Basin and California is shown, based on a letter of Smith describing his journeys published in the Nouvelles Annales de Voyages, Paris 1828 (Wheat). Two insets show the environs of Mexico City and Vera Cruz, and the Yucatan. Texas is still shown as a part of Mexico. Under the title Picquet has added his name as publisher, Picquet acquired all Brue's maps from his widow in 1835. There was a second edition in 1835, and a third in 1837. Wheat does not mention this fourth edition. Map is hand painted in outline color, dissected into 21 sections and mounted on linen. Map folds into loose marbled paper wrappers and then into a marbled paper covered slip case with a red label stamped with "Mexique" in gilt. |
