There is an ad for "Colton's...Complete Series of War Maps" on the verso of the cover and a pasted down list of Union and Confederate Political and Military leaders on the verso of the map. The map was sold in London by Sampson Low, Son & Co., by arrangement with Colton. All the prices quoted for Colton's maps on the paste down are in pounds. Wheat: "a complex map very different in aspect from that of 1868, yet no less beautiful, and employing the new information that had reached the War Department during the 1870's." It is a complete redrawing of the Freyhold/Warren map of 1868, larger in scale, and so dense in information that the itineraries are no longer shown. There is an inset of Alaska in the lower right. This copy belonged to James Douglas, the founder of the Phelps Dodge mining empire in Arizona and for whom Douglas, Arizona, was named. In the same year the Army issued somewhat larger versions of this map on thin paper for field use, one example being the Map of California and Nevada with Parts of Utah & Arizona (see our #3360). Each sheet folds with a marbled end paper into brown cloth covers 21.5x12.5, the sheet no. and region shown in each map is written in ms on the inside covers, alongside bookplates reading "Jamais Arriere. Ex Libris James Douglas. History Science Literature Theology ..." The photocopy of sheet 6 folds into new brown cloth covers very similar to the original covers. 1st edition, 1st issue - "Tennassee Government." Many changes from the later 1808/1811 issue - the Great Lakes and the upper Mississippi are drawn very preliminarily and inaccurately, very few roads are shown throughout, there is a long note in the lower left corner about the boundaries of Georgia, parts of Maine and Canada are blank or inaccurately drawn, and Georgia and Tennessee have much less detail. Only the title sheet that shows the Carolinas and Virginia is about the same, except for fewer roads. As geographical knowledge increased about the parts north and west, Arrowsmith filled in this map. Outline color by state. In two sheets, each dissected into 16 sections and backed with linen. Folds into original tan marbled slip case 32x19 with a paste down label reading "North America. Date 1796" in ms, and "Sold by Wm. Allen 32 Dame Strt." printed in black ink. |

1st edition, shows all of Staten Island. This edition extends further south than the 1863 issue of "New-York and Its Vicinity" that we have (although Haskell lists an 1863 edition that is the same coverage as this edition - #1121) but it does not extend as far north (it extends 19 miles north and 15 miles south, shown with circles). Walling seems to have published two variants of this map to meet the demands of two markets - similar to Beers' "Philadelphia and Vicinity" map of the same period. Much land ownership information is shown outside of Manhattan Island. Full color by county, dissected into 36 sections. |

| Note |
This is a reworking of the Lubrecht and Rosa map "The American Continent" of 1864, and the first edition, first issue in a new format. Statistics at the top of the 1864 map are here replaced with a view "From the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean" emphasizing the recently completed transcontinental railroad. Also, an elaborate title and view of a steam engine and train station have replaced the more subdued 1864 title. Population tables of the United States are added to the left and right sides of the map. The map itself has been updated to show political and some topographical changes of the ensuing seven years. Projected railroad lines are shown running everywhere in the west. The coloring is very bright, to match the decidedly optimistic (expansionist) flavor of the map. D.L. Guernsey published editions of 1871 and 1874 in Concord New Hampshire, with no major changes in the map. WH has an 1873 edition by Haasis and Lubrecht that adds text next to the population figures, more railroads, no changes in topography. Issued in a cover with a label in German from Wilhelm Lubrecht in Stuttgart, Germany, indicating it may have been sold to emigrants. Full color. Map has green paper edging, is dissected into 16 sections, and fold into a new gray cloth folding case 35x27 with "American Union Railroad Map Haasis & Lubrecht 1871" stamped in gilt on the spine. |

The third edition (although I can detect no changes from the first issue of 1830). Has the note in the lower left explaining the origin of the term of Fredonia. This map is the only one I have seen that copies almost literally three earlier maps: Lewis and Clark (1814), Long (1822), and Arrowsmith's Mexico (1820). Laurie used the term Fredonia, we may assume, to create a novelty of his map, in the same manner as his "Cabotia" map of 1814. Has the original case with label, and an advertisement for Crunchley's publications on the verso of the map. W. Heckrotte has another edition dated 1834 improved to 1836 (with changes in California based on John Arrowsmith's Map of British North America, 1834), and the second edition of 1832. The western topography is changed to incorporate Arrowsmith's map of 1834 (British North America) and an independent Texas is shown. Editions seen of 1830, 1832, 1834, 1836, 1849. It appears that the map was updated frequently in order to keep it current. It is an excellent and beautiful map. |

First edition. Large, four sectioned map in original case, each sheet is dissected into 16 sections). Ten inset maps. Editions to 1850. A large, impressive map, with a unique title indicating Purdy's attempt to create a new name for the region discovered by Cabot, and/or an attempt by Laurie and Whittle to sell more maps (see Fredonia map of 1833). The main organizing feature of the map is the drainage of the St. Lawrence River and the Great Lakes. The inset maps are very detailed and several notes discuss Cabot's explorations. Tanner mentions this map as a source in his preface to the American Atlas, as does Melish in his Geographical Description of the United States. Stevens and Tree list editions of 1814, 1821, and 1821/25, Winearls adds editions of 1828 (May), 1828 (June), 1838, and 1850. With outline color. Folds into original marbled cardboard slip case 21x16.5 with a label reading "Cabotia. Jo Gratz" in ms, and "Sold by Wm. Allen, 32 Dame Strt." printed in ink. |
