Tanner listing as publisher instead of Melish). Morris did a revised ed. in 1849 (see our copy). Melish spent more than six years on this monumental project, which he hoped would serve as a model for other state map. The map was sponsored by the state and based on individual county surveys. Full Title (Covers to) Map Of The Northern Part of the State Of New York. Compiled from actual Survey By Amos Lay 1812. Entered ... 16th day of July 1812 by Amos Lay ... New-York.
List No 2293A
Note 2nd Lay map of N.Y. State, 1st was in 1801. In 1817 Lay extended the State map south to include New York City. This map extends only to the Pennsylvania border. Lay's 1801 map covers only the most northern parts of the state. For some reason, his 3 editions of the state map expand coverage from north to south ending with complete coverage in the 3rd edition. Phillips states that this map was engraved by Samuel Maverick in Newark, New Jersey, although nothing on our copy indicates this. Shows the Proposed Canal from Rome to the west, and shows Indian Reservations in yellow. Much information on land surveys and development, Military tracts, and evolving towns. Signature of Franklin Bache on inside cover. Bache was the great grandson of Benjamin Franklin, brother of A.D. Bache (head of the Coast Survey), and a noted teacher and scientist. Bache was in the War of 1812, and it is possible that this map was acquired for use therein, as it shows many of the areas of the conflict. Dissected into 40 sections and mounted on linen. Outline color by county. Map folds into original marbled card covers 22x14, and into a new tan cloth folding case 23x15 with "Northern Part Of New York Amos Lay 1812" stamped in gold on the spine.

List No 2317.000
Note Late edition, 1st edition 1830. Lacks the note in the lower left corner regarding the origin of the term Fredonia, such note appears in the earlier editions. However, the western geography of this edition is most interesting, as it incorporates Fremont's discoveries. It does not have indications of gold discoveries. Graphically, a very beautiful map. See Spafford's Geography 1809 for further discussion of Fredonia. Cruchley published the 1830, 1832, and 1833 editions (as did Laurie, according to Wheat 393).

List No 2496.000
Note Smyth was the first Surveyor General of Canada and in 1799 wrote "A Short Topographical Description of His Majesty's Province of Upper Canada, In North America" which was sold with the map. This map is the first edition of the "Smyth Series" which went through 13 separate editions to 1858 (see Farrell, Explorations in the History of Canadian Mapping, pp152-154). Smyth's name was dropped from all editions after 1835. Faden published the map until 1818, Wyld published it after 1831. Longest publishing history of any map of the region (Farrell). Note Colored by county, engraved by J.V.N. Throop. 1826 on title. Shows the Farmington Canal extended to Northampton, Mass., which is further than the uncolored 1826 edition, so we presume it was updated at least a year later. Later Editions published to 1853. The quality of the engraving is extraordinary. Throop engraved Ohio for Lucas' 1823 General Atlas. Tooley lists an O.H. Throop of New York who engraved for Amos Lay (New York 1832) as well as for Asa Whitney, and a D.S. Throop who also engraved for Lay (U.S. 1832). Map is bordered in green silk , dissected in 24 sections, and folds with marbled end sheets into a blue marbled slip case 26x21.

Full Title Map Of The Territory Of The United States From The Mississippi River To The Pacific Ocean, Originally prepared to accompany the Reports of the Explorations For A Pacific Railroad Route ... Compiled from authorized explorations and other reliable data by Lieut. G.K. Warren, Top'l. Eng'rs. In the Office of Pacific R.R. Surveys, War Dept. under the direction of Bvt. Maj. W.H. Emory, Top'l. Eng'rs. in 1854. Capt. A.A. Humphreys, Top'l. Eng'rs. in 1854-58. And partly recompiled and redrawn under the direction of the Engineer Bureau in 1865-66-67. Engineer Bureau, War Department. Engraved on stone by Julius Bien, New York.
List No 2594.000
Note Reissue, with new discoveries, of 1857 Warren "Map of the Territory of the United States..." Although Freyhold's name is not on the title, he clearly redrew this map from his earlier 1858 edition (where his name does appear on the title). This is earlier than the 1868 Warren/Freyhold editions (Streeter 3080 and 3081), and should be distinguished from them in having the title still in the lower left corner (not in the lower center as in the 1868 Warren/Freyhold editions), and because it does not have the Alaska inset, has 47 authorities vs. 48, and is dated Aug 26, 1867 in Ms. next to the same inscription mentioned by Streeter on his later copy (Wm. E. Merrill, etc., which Streeter mistakes for E. Hamill). Mail routes in red ink (original?)(Streeter says they were dropped from the second 1868 ed.) plus many interesting Ms. additions of names of forts, and extension of pacific railroad. Cf. Wheat 1185. Wheat does not mention this edition and was not aware of it (see his "correction" of Wheeler's mention of the map in the note, p. 244). See a very informative article by Lewis Buttery on a slightly earlier state of this map (early 1867) found at West Point - "Warren Map of 1867." Outline color. Map is dissected into 24 sections, edged in blue silk, and folded into a new burgundy cloth folding case 30x22 with "Warren & Freyhold. Map of Exploratations (sic) for Pacific R.R. 1865-67" stamped in gilt.

Full Title The State of New York with part of the adjacent States. By John H. Eddy, Geographer, New York 1818. Engraved by Tanner, Vallance, Kearny & Co. Philadelphia. Printed by Saml. Maverick N. York. New York Published By James Eastburn & Co. At The Literary Rooms In Broadway.
List No 2622.000
Note This map was published after Eddy's death (see biography of Eddy in American Monthly Magazine and Critical Review, May, 1818). Eddy was deaf, and died young at 35, on December 22, 1817. He also published a map of the county 30 miles around New York City (circular) in 1811 (see our copy), and a map of the western part of New York State for the canal commissioners in 1811. An extraordinary map maker about whom little has been known. He planned an American Atlas and a Map of the State of New Jersey, both abandoned after his death (perhaps Tanner's American Atlas was somehow related to Eddy's proposed Atlas). Tanner lists the three New York maps as sources for his New York Map in his American Atlas and has only the highest praise for Eddy. This New York State map is remarkable for its clarity of execution and detail. New York state counties and other states with outline color. Maps is dissected into 16 sheets, and lays in a new burgundy cloth folding case 29x25 with "State Of New York J.H. Eddy 1818" stamped in gilt on the spine.

Note One issue of 8 issues (Ristow). This issue has inset maps and business directories of Philadelphia, Germantown, Frankford, Bridesburg plus five small towns (all at the top), and Manayunk, Falls of Schuykill, Hestonville, Paschallville, Tacony and Holmesburg at the bottom. Other issues of the map have Philadelphia and Trenton and Philadelphia and Camden in the titles. Lake and Beers may have done eight issues to cover different parts of the local market, much in the manner of Beers' six different issues of his Atlas of New York and Vicinity of 1867-8. The date of 1860 on the map has been changed to 1869 by someone drawing the "9" in place of the "0" which probably had rubbed off - the artist thought incorrectly that the date was 1869 (unless there was an unrecorded later issue and it really was a "9"). Full color map, dissected into 36 sections, and backed and bordered in linen. Folds into blue marbled end sheets 31x28, and is layed into a new green cloth folding case with "Vicinity Of Philadelphia Lake And Beers 1869" stamped in gilt on the spine.

Note 4th edition, corrected to 1812, but dated 1804. This map was originally issued in 1804. This copy is dated 1804 but is corrected for political and topographical changes to 1812. It shows Louisiana and Missouri Territory, both of which were established in 1812. There has been extensive redrawing of the Mississippi River from the junction of the Ohio north to the Wyaconda River (probably due to the public surveys in southern Illinois, evidenced by the appearance of Township and Range lines there). Numerous other changes from the 1804 edition have been made throughout the map adding new counties, towns, roads, and changed physical features, primarily in the mid and western portions. So far I have been able to identify 1804, 1806, 1809, and 1812 editions, but it is likely that other editions will be discovered. The dates are estimates based on the political changes on the maps - all editions are dated 1804 on the title. Since it was a postal map and needed to be current as to towns, road and counties, it is probable that the map was updated every few years, until a new plate was made in 1819 by Harrison (Karpinski 59, Karrow 1-1466). The 1796 edition of this map (a different engraving) was changed four times in as many years (Wheat & Brun 127-130). The 1819 edition became the official post office map in 1825, used until 1829 (Ristow). All of the 1804 to 1812 editions were originally engraved by Francis Shallus of Philadelphia. With outline color. This copy in original condition, dissected into 32 sections and mounted on linen, in original quarter leather marbled covers 27x20 with ties (remnants now) and title "Bradley's U. States" stamped in gild on the spine.

Inset of Central America, text on top of map describing British American Possessions, Time Tables, and U.S. Census for 1860. Note Separate issue of Johnston's National Atlas Map of the United States. Rare variant issue of this map: it has an inset of Charleston Vicinity and Harbor that does not appear on any other issues of the maps, and most importantly, the southern slave states and northern free states are color coded (solid red for slave and outline red for free). Two printed notes relate to the boundaries of the slave states and the cotton growing regions. The three forts at the entrance to Charleston Harbor are underlined in red. Although the presence of Minnesota Territory would indicate a date no later than 1858 (when it became a state), this map has much Civil War information and, in typical British fashion, it is probably a bit out of date as to political information, so we date it at the beginning of the war, 1861. Not in Stephenson. Map is dissected into 18 sections and mounted on linen with dark purple cloth covers 18.5x12 of Edward Stanford's map establishment, labeled with "Map Of The United States. London: Edward Stanford, 6, Charing Cross, S.W."

List No 3324.001
Note The U.S. portion of the map is identical to Maclure's 1809 base map. This map seems to have a long history. It first appears as the Maclure base in 1809 (indicating that it must have been published as a Political map at that time, but we can find no record of it), then it shows up in Amer. Phil. Soc. 563 as the same map but dated 1811, then a second copy in the same holding dated 1813 and having "2nd edition, Containing the Seat of War &c." - both copies by T.L. Plowman of Philadelphia. This is a portion of the map here - it has the same notations, including the 1813 date, but three sections have been added, including Nova Scotia and Newfoundland, the West Indies, Central America and part of South America. And it has a new title (as above) and is dated 1817 - the title is a paste on slip which presumably covers the earlier title - A Map of the United States of America (as on Maclure). Ristow and Karrow then list an 1820 edition of this same map. The title mentioning the Seat of War indicates that the map had use during the War of 1812. After Plowman's name is "entered according to act of Congress 22nd Mar." With outline color by state and cloth edging. Dissected into 24 sections and folding into half leather marbled paper covered boards 27x17 with ties.
