By Joseph Scheda, Engineer of the Geographic Corps, Militarisch Geografischen Institute, Austria. Comprised of 20 sheets, each dissected into 6 sections. Incredible detail throughout the map. A triumph of Austrian/German engraving. The 20 sheets cover most of middle and southern Europe. With an index map titled "Ubersicht zur Zusammenstellung der Blaetter fur die General Karte des oesterreichischen Kaiserstaates." Scheda did a 25 sheet map of Europe. Scheda lived from 1815-1888 (Phillips) and did a Hand Atlas in 1879 with A. Steinhauser (Phillips 6201) which we gather was largely a Physical Atlas. Outline color. Map sheets fold each with a paste down label on the end sheet showing its corresponding portion of the map and roman numeral as shown in the index map. The sheets are then folded into a maroon cloth covered folding board and outer quarter leather maroon cloth slip case 26x21 with "General-Karte Der Oesterreichischen Monarchie von J. This is called Melish's greatest work (Ristow). 1st ed. 1822. Melish died in 1822, eds. were published in 1824, 1826, and 1832 by the state (which explains B. Tanner listing as publisher instead of Melish). Morris did a revised ed. in 1849 (see our copy). Melish spent more than six years on this monumental project, which he hoped would serve as a model for other state map. The map was sponsored by the state and based on individual county surveys. Map has outline color by county, blue cloth edging, and is dissected into 40 sections. Folds into marbled end sheets which slips into a half leather marbled cover 35x21 with "Pennsylvania" stamped in gilt on the spine. |

| Note |
2nd Lay map of N.Y. State, 1st was in 1801. In 1817 Lay extended the State map south to include New York City. This map extends only to the Pennsylvania border. Lay's 1801 map covers only the most northern parts of the state. For some reason, his 3 editions of the state map expand coverage from north to south ending with complete coverage in the 3rd edition. Phillips states that this map was engraved by Samuel Maverick in Newark, New Jersey, although nothing on our copy indicates this. Shows the Proposed Canal from Rome to the west, and shows Indian Reservations in yellow. Much information on land surveys and development, Military tracts, and evolving towns. Signature of Franklin Bache on inside cover. Bache was the great grandson of Benjamin Franklin, brother of A.D. Bache (head of the Coast Survey), and a noted teacher and scientist. Bache was in the War of 1812, and it is possible that this map was acquired for use therein, as it shows many of the areas of the conflict. Dissected into 40 sections and mounted on linen. Outline color by county. Map folds into original marbled card covers 22x14, and into a new tan cloth folding case 23x15 with "Northern Part Of New York Amos Lay 1812" stamped in gold on the spine. |

4 inset city maps and a War Dept. Weather Map. This is Watson's Western States Map in a new configuration with city plans - in order to make it a companion to the Railroad and County Map of the U.S. and Canada, which came with it, also dissected, with "United States" on the covers (see #2540.000), this map has "Territories" on the cover. Above the title is an explanation of the "American System of Weather Signals." The Chicago map shows the Burnt District in red. Lots of useful text spread around, in the classic Watson manner. |

Has "United States" on the cover and is the companion map to the Map of the Western States... with "Territories" (see #2539.000) on its cover. Copyright date is 1871. For some reason, Modelski does not list all these early Watson maps, but only a few maps dated 1874 and later, perhaps Watson did not deposit all his maps with the LOC. |

1st edition. 2nd edition was1865, another edition in 1869 (Karrow 1-1683). German edition published in 1864. (Karrow 1-1655). Inset of Central America, text on top of map describing British American Possessions, Time Tables, and U.S. Census for 1860. We can find no earlier edition of this map, so the "Revised Edition" is puzzling. Lubrecht lists three foreign publishers for this map: Bacon in London, Volkmar in Leipsic, and Lubrecht & Co. in Stuttgart. An edition in German is described in Karrow. Later, this map became the more elaborate 1871 "American Union Railroad Map of the United States..." by Hassis & Lubrecht, also published by D.L. Gurnsey (see our copy, WH's copy, and Heaston Cat. 19 for a reproduction). The Proposed transcontinental railroad is shown going south of Salt Lake City, Wyoming is still part of Dakota, and a Proposed Southern Pacific Railroad runs from Fort Smith to Sacramento. Full color by state. Map is dissected into 24 sections and mounted on linen. Folded into black paper covered boards 24.5x21 with "The American Continent" stamped in gilt. Relief shown by hachures. |

Very large hand colored map with detailed engraving. This does not look like the "normal" Rand McNally map - it is probably a separately made map that they acquired the rights to. With outline color by state, topography shown in brown, and railways and shipping routes in red. 5 original sheets of 6, with the title sheet No. 6 (southeast corner) is photocopy. Each sheet is dissected into 24 sections and backed with linen. Wheat: "a complex map very different in aspect from that of 1868, yet no less beautiful, and employing the new information that had reached the War Department during the 1870's." It is a complete redrawing of the Freyhold/Warren map of 1868, larger in scale, and so dense in information that the itineraries are no longer shown. There is an inset of Alaska in the lower right. This copy belonged to James Douglas, the founder of the Phelps Dodge mining empire in Arizona and for whom Douglas, Arizona, was named. In the same year the Army issued somewhat larger versions of this map on thin paper for field use, one example being the Map of California and Nevada with Parts of Utah & Arizona (see our #3360). Each sheet folds with a marbled end paper into brown cloth covers 21.5x12.5, the sheet no. and region shown in each map is written in ms on the inside covers, alongside bookplates reading "Jamais Arriere. Ex Libris James Douglas. History Science Literature Theology ..." The photocopy of sheet 6 folds into new brown cloth covers very similar to the original covers. All six maps reside in a new brown cloth slip case 22.5x13.5 with a black label on spine reading "Territory of the U.S. west of the Mississippi River. Edward Freyhold. 1879" in gilt. With outline color by state, water in full color. |

Large hand colored and very detailed map of the United States and part of Canada. Up to date in the west, showing an extraordinary number of towns in California and Nevada. Topography is clearly delineated and Railroads are shown are far as they had been developed. Even Colorado is shown as a State (which occurred in 1876). Inset map of Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. There is a quote from Stansbury regarding the desert outside of Salt Lake City (a bit out of date, but shows attention to detail). The map makers certainly used the most current U.S. government maps as sources. On the verso is the label of Lanee, successor of Longuet, a Paris map seller, with Etats Unis in pen. Full color by state. Map is dissected into 40 sections, and edged and backed with linen.
