Inset of Central America, text on top of map describing British American Possessions, Time Tables, and U.S. Census for 1860. We can find no earlier edition of this map, so the "Revised Edition" is puzzling. Lubrecht lists three foreign publishers for this map: Bacon in London, Volkmar in Leipsic, and Lubrecht & Co. in Stuttgart. An edition in German is described in Karrow. Later, this map became the more elaborate 1871 "American Union Railroad Map of the United States..." by Hassis & Lubrecht, also published by D.L. Gurnsey (see our copy, WH's copy, and Heaston Cat. 19 for a reproduction). The Proposed transcontinental railroad is shown going south of Salt Lake City, Wyoming is still part of Dakota, and a Proposed Southern Pacific Railroad runs from Fort Smith to Sacramento. Full color by state. Map is dissected into 24 sections and mounted on linen. Folded into black paper covered boards 24.5x21 with "The American Continent" stamped in gilt. Relief shown by hachures.

Note	Large hand colored and very detailed map of the United States and part of Canada. Up to date in the west, showing an extraordinary number of towns in California and Nevada. Topography is clearly delineated and Railroads are shown are far as they had been developed. Even Colorado is shown as a State (which occurred in 1876). Inset map of Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. There is a quote from Stansbury regarding the desert outside of Salt Lake City (a bit out of date, but shows attention to detail). The map makers certainly used the most current U.S. government maps as sources. On the verso is the label of Lanee, successor of Longuet, a Paris map seller, with Etats Unis in pen. Full color by state. Map is dissected into 40 sections, and edged and backed with linen. Folds into a new blue cloth folding case 25x17 with "United States Stanford 1875" stamped in gilt on the spine.

Note	This large and decorative map by Monk reflects the interest in Central America in the mid 50's (see Palmer, Wyld, Disturnell, and others) but adds the U.S. coast line from Florida to Texas, which is missing in most of the other maps of Central America. With a large inset map of the World, statistics on the Yucatan, boundary notes on Costa Rica, Historical Notes on Belize and the Mosquito Coast, and the usual abundance of Monk's decorative sailing ships. The inside cover lists this map, Monk's New American Map, and Monk's Railroad and Telegraph Map - which we have never heard of before (although Karrow does list an 1856 edition: 1-1612). Full color map, folded into stamped brown cloth covers 16x11 titled "Monk's New Map Of Central America, Cuba, Florida &c." Relief shown by hachures.

Note	This is the second 1834 issue, substituting "Reference and Distance" for "A New" of "A New Map of the United States by J.H. Young" that was the title of the first 1834 issue. The third 1834 issue adds "Mitchell's" to this title. We can find no changes in the map, other than the title changes, for all three issues of 1834. Full color by state, with blue silk edging. Maps is dissected into 36 sections and folds into half leather marbled boards 31x24.5 with ties. The front cover has a leather label embossed in gold reading "Mitchell's Map Of The United States."

Note	Covers to map, and cover and title page of index. The seventh edition. Michigan peninsula has been substantially redrawn, the profiles in the lower left corner of the map have been eliminated to reveal a good bit of Republican Texas, Wisconsin and Iowa are shown, Missouri is enlarged in the northwestern corner, and new counties are added in most of the settling states. This is a major revision of the map. There is added a new key index system of numbers (and letters for Texas) to go with an attached "Alphabetical Index to the Four Sheet Map of The United States" (see our #4846). The index is bound in patterned tan cloth covered boards 18.5x11 with a label reading "Index Of Places, Contained On Tanner's Map Of The United States." Most copies of this map are either colored in outline or in full color by state, this copy is in full color by county - the only such example we have seen. Streeter Texas 1232 is the 1836 edition of this map, which apparently shows Texas in much the same form and includes the separate index volume. Map is edged in green cloth, dissected into 60 sections and mounted on linen. Folds with marbled end sheets into the original half leather red cloth covers 22x17 with ties, title on the spine is stamped in gold and reads "Map Of The United States With Index 1839."

Note	This is the third issue of the 1857 Rogers and Johnston Map Of The United States (see our #4390) with Mexico added prominently to the title. Highly detailed map showing county boundaries, court houses, the homes of doctors, and explanations of the topography ("These Rivers head in Flat Glady Land.") Includes two inset maps: one of the southern part of Florida, and the second of North America from Columbia in the south to Greenland in the north. Note	2nd edition or state of this map, with printed date of 1804 but with estimated date of 1805 based on the naming of Michigan Territory which was formed in 1805 The 1804 first edition (see LOC copy) does not name Michigan. Other changes from the first edition include new public surveys on the Indiana Territory and Ohio border and the addition of a Rapids between Jallot Lake and Great Falls on the Red River. Also of note is the coloring of the Lousiana Territory green all the way to the Pacific coast on the inset map of North America. Other copies we have seen show the Lousiana Territory extending only to the Rocky Mountains - the 1809 and the 1812 editions have a dotted line marking the boundary roughly at the Rocky Mountains. This 1805 edition and the 1804 edition do not have such a line north of the the 42nd parallel.
