Note 2nd (and best) edition, first with Tanner's Map of the Canals and Railroads of the United States. The map is copyright 1830. The book lists over 150 canals and navigation improvements in great detail. The map shows the most important canals and two railroads in operation, and one proposed railroad (the Great Western Railroad, from New York to the Mississippi River)plus two others. The canals and railroad lines are in color. The first edition appeared in 1826 with 10 maps but without the Tanner map (see our copy #4214). Tanner in 1834 and 1840 (see our copies, #2655 and #979) published a book on Canals and Railroads that uses the same map, updated. Modelski lists the 1834 Tanner map as "one of the earliest general maps of the eastern United States showing railroads in operation." Since this 1830 copy is an earlier state of the same map, it probably qualifies as the true "first." Two folding plates of profiles of canals and railroads at the back. Not in Streeter, Eberstadt, or Graff. Bound in half leather boards with "A Connected View" on the spine.

List No 0693.018
Note The general map published with the Pacific Railroad Survey Reports. This map had earlier issues and later issues. A preliminary listed of those would be: 1855 (our #2289), 1857 (WH and AH's copies)- blank areas in eastern Oregon, fewer authorities, 1857 published with the reports, 1858 early (see Schubert);1858 late (our #2750), 1867 (our #2594). We suspect there are other states and issues, particularly in the period of 1859 to 1866. This is one of the most important maps of the West in the 1850's and 1860's and a study of its different states shows the rapid growth of topographical information from government exploration and mapping. Without color.

Ristow says the first edition was 1834, and while that was the first issue of the enlarged guide with text, this 1825 map is from the same plate as the 1834 map and thus should be seen as the first edition of the guide. The entire lower right corner of the map is taken up with lists of "Steam Boat Routes Throughout the United States," which are keyed to letters in the map margins. In the 1834 and later editions, these lists are replaced with inset maps of U.S. cities, and the lists are given, along with added stage and railroad routes, in the body of the text. Outline color by state. In red leather covers, 13x8, gilt stamped "Traveller's Guide Through The U. States."

Note This is a major revision of the guide with an entirely new map by Ira S. Drake (about whom we find nothing) with five inset maps entitled - "Vicinity Of Niagara Falls", "Map Of The Copper Mine Region", "Map of the Gold and Quicksilver district of California", "Map of the Maritime and Overland Routes to California", and "Map Of New England Or Eastern States". The map emphasis on the California gold rush is clear, although the 128 pages of expanded text do not yet list routes to the gold fields, while they do add routes west from St. Louis and Independence. The main map is larger than the earlier Mitchell/Young maps, but shows roughly the same area on a somewhat larger scale. An "Advertisement" (actually a preface) dated Nov. 1, 1848, states: "The following work is similar in design to 'Mitchell's Traveller's Guide,' first published about twelve years ago, and which has been so extremely patronized, that it may be safely asserted no book of the kind ever printed in this country has met with so wide a circulation." Covers are black stamped leather with "Mitchell's New Traveller's Guide Through The United States" and a beautiful illustration of a steam boat and train stamped in gilt. Map is outline color. Catalogue of Thomas, Cowperthwait School Books included in the text. Prime meridian is Washington D.C.

List No 2869.003
Note 1st edition. This guide is scarcer than Mitchell's Traveller's Guide. The outline color map is very similar to the Traveller's Guide Map - it is probably from the same plate, but covers slightly more area, has eight inset maps (the Traveller's map drops the Hartford /New Haven inset and adds two - Niagara Falls and New Orleans) instead of nine, and has a table of distances below the title. The 84 page text in this guide is a descriptive listing of Canals, Railroads, etc., the Traveller's Guide text functions as a route book and was certainly more generally useful and had many more editions. There was only one other edition of this Compendium, in 1838 (see our #521). The map was issued separately in 1839 (see our #4950) and a printing on silk was issued in 1835 (see our #4544). Book is bound into black leather covers with "Mitchell's Compendium Of Canals & Railroads" and a decorative border stamped in gilt. Four page catalogue of Mitchell's maps. Prime meridians are Washington D.C. and Greenwich.

Full Title Die Vereinigten Staaten von Nord-America. Entworfen von J.E. Woerl. Lithographie von B. Herder in Freiburg im Breisgau.
List No 3048.001
Note A traveler's guide (similar to Mitchell) with an exceptional map (51x64). The map is titled "Die Vereinigten Staaten Von Nord-America." It is engraved by J.E. Woerl (see Tooley Dictionary) and printed (Litho) by B. Herder. It is beautifully engraved, extending from coast to coast and full of much interesting information. In the west it is largely a copy of Brue's "Mexique" map of 1834 and perhaps Brue's 1833 map of North America (not seen). Yet none of Smith's routes are shown. Wheat does not mention it, but does mention a later Bromme map of 1853, which is of the eastern half of the country with an inset of the west (see our 1855 copy, #4364). Buck traces the beginning of this guide to a larger work by Bromme published in 1840. The map here is pre Fremont, pre Mexican War and seems to show a large Texas Republic, making its date around 1840-42. The guide book and map are housed in printed paper case. The larger book originally published in 1840 contained travel descriptions as well as a listing of routes. This edition only lists the routes. Bromme published many travel guides with maps in the period of 1835-1865. Sabin provides the most detailed listings. Map in outline color.

Note The map, 79x95, is from Johnson's 1857 Map of the Union, and becomes Colton's Map of the United States, Mexico, the West Indies etc. of 1861. The map shows all the interesting changes of 1859: Colona, Nevada, Arizona, Dakota, and an unnamed Idaho. Wheat says, "The map is a most important one for its showing of political subdivisions in the West, and for its tracing of the 'Mail Route,' on the route of the Butterfield Stageline." Its function here is to show the possible routes between the U.S. and Mexico by steamship. NUC lists an edition of 1859 at the Library of Congress. Sabin only lists this 1860 edition. A second edition was published in 1861 with a map of the United States by Julius Bien (see D. Sloan Bulletin Nine). Bound with brown cloth covered boards with title embossed on cover.
