Note	This issue incorporates the Lewis and Clark discoveries (and other discoveries) and remaps the entire continent west of the Mississippi. The changes between this and the last edition (1811) are monumental. This copy is from the collection of Sir Charles Broke (or Brooke, subsequently Vere). Broke was in Lower Canada with his regiment, the 5th (Northumberland) Regiment of Foot, which was at the battle of Plattsburg in 1814. Later, he was with the Army of Occupation in France, receiving the Waterloo medal despite arriving from Canada too late for the battle (from Manasek). Without color. Dissected into 40 sections and mounted on linen. Folds into a new gray cloth covered box case 29x22x7 with "North America A. Arrowsmith 1814" stamped on the spine in gold.

Note	Scarce map with Drawings by Bruff. According to Tooley, Bruff did: State of Florida, 1846, this map, Tehuantepec maps, 1851, Seat of War in Virginia, 1861. In Phillips p410, this map and another smaller map also published by Disturnell are listed. From the Introduction to his travel diary, it is clear that Bruff drew for the Topographical Engineers and other government departments for over 50 years. Many of his products may not have his name on them - he is quoted in the introduction (page xxx) saying that he drew duplicates of the Fremont maps and plates for both houses of Congress. The four inset maps are titled: Plan of Monterey, Map Showing the Battle Grounds of the 8th and 9th May 1846, Tampico and its Environs, and Chart of the Bay of Vera Cruz. Map is folded into brown cloth covers 15x10 with "Map Of The Seat Of War In Mexico." stamped in gilt.

Note	This is the first year of Colton's map publishing business. Ristow says that Colton published his first map in 1833, Burr's map of New York State, this U.S. map must be as early. Note	With red cloth covers 14.5x9 stamped with gilt title reading "Thirty Three Miles Around The City Of New-York." and a small circular map of New York (later editions omit the map on the cover). First issued in 1846, when it was reengraved by Atwood from J.H. Eddy's "Map of the Country Thirty Miles round the City of New York" which was originally issued in 1811 (see our #3472). This is one of Colton's most attractive maps, showing New York and vicinity in circular format surrounded by a vine border with views of City Hall, New York and City Hall, Brooklyn. It was published in many editions for almost fifty years - our latest edition is 1891 (Haskell lists eight editions from 1846 to 1873 only). The early editions were engraved on copper plate (our 1853) and at some point before our 1865 edition the copper plate was transferred to lithographic stone and all subsequent editions were lithographed.

Note	Reissue of 1848 2nd edition. Wheat says that only one copy of the map without the "2nd edition" added exists, he doesn't say where, also he says that only one copy exists, at the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris, with 2nd edition and no date after it (the true 2nd edition of 1848). Wheat's copy is like this one, as is the Huntington Library copy. There are no changes other than colored boundaries and the addition of New Mexico in type, between this and the 1848 edition. Map is folded into yellow card board covers 14x9 printed with "Hutawa's Traveling Map Of Mexico, And California."

Annin's name on a globe of this late date is puzzling, since he was active in the period 1815-40, as a maker of globes and (with Smith) as engraver for Cumming's School Geography and Daniel Adam's School Geography (see Ristow p.294, Tooley Dictionary). With a lovely floral iron stand. Total height of the globe and stand is 9.5 inches.

Note	With 46 page "Accompaniment to Mitchell's New Map Of Texas, Oregon, and California With The Regions Adjoining;" the full color map is folded into stamped black leather covers 13.5x8 with "Texas, Oregon And California" in gilt. This was one of Mitchell's most popular and important pocket maps. Later editions were published in 1849, 1851, and 1852, as pocket maps and as insets to the large Reference and Distance Map of the United States. It was also issued separately as a wall map. This issue has Texas colored green, some copies have Texas colored brown (has the green changed over time?). The text has a catalogue for Mitchell's publications. Mitchell first issued this map as an inset to his Reference and Distance Map of the United States in the 1846 edition (see our copy).

Note	Mullan/Freyhold map, titled "General Map of the North Pacific States and Territories Belonging to the United States and of British Columbia ... Exhibiting Mail Routes, Gold Mines ... Drawn by Edward Freyhold, T.E." Strange Owyhee depiction - shows Kearney River and the Jordan Creek flowing into the Owyhee and a road from "Star City" on the Humboldt (which is actually in Buena Vista Valley south of the Humboldt!) going north through the Owyhee to Boise. Map is very incorrect regarding northern Nevada and Southeastern Oregon. Further study needed. Explore the relationship to Williamson's map of 1866. Kearney River comes from the Dixon map of 1860, but Dixon puts the Kearney where Freyhold puts the Jordan. Much detail on the Owyhee Mines in the addenda. Bound with brown linen covered boards with title on the spine.
