Pub Note:
This volume 7 of Neptune Francois forms an extensive atlas of charts of the western coasts of North and South America, with most charts dated or updated to the 1820's. 25 charts are listed in the index, yet 35 charts are present here. This copy is from the library of the Duc d'Orleans. This issue must be later than the NMM 256, since it has 10 extra charts dated from 1823 to 1828; the latest date in NMM256 is 1822. The eight Vancouver charts appear to be original issues or restrikes from the original plates; the La Perouse charts are absolutely restrikes on newer paper, with the Mappe Monde updated in Australia to show the coastal discoveries in the south. The progression of engraving style from the La Perouse to the 1828 charts is most interesting. The charts of Mexico and South America are largely copies of the Spanish Marine charts issued in the early 1800s showing the Malaspina Expedition tracks (see W. Heckrotte's copy of the Spanish charts). Bound in full red leather covers with decorative gold border and the same titles as above stamped on the spine.

AI-Generated Summary:
This work is an engraved map titled "Plan d'Arica, sur la cote du Perou," created by Flury and Joseph Lartigue in 1824. It was part of the Neptune Francois atlas, published by the Depot General de la Marine. The atlas features charts of the western coasts of North and South America, with many charts updated to the 1820s. The map measures 43 cm in width and 48 cm in height.
Composition and Medium:
The map is an engraved chart map, a common mode of cartographic representation during the 19th century. It employs hachures to show relief and provides soundings in pieds (feet) to indicate water depth, a crucial feature for navigation. The engraving work was done by Caplin, with writing by Besancon, both of whom were noted artisans in cartographic production.
Style and Presentation:
The map's style is typical of early 19th-century nautical charts, focusing on clarity and functionality. The precision of the line work and the detailed soundings reflect the needs of maritime navigation. The map includes a circular title cartouche in the upper right, providing essential information about its creation and publication. The logo of the Depot General de la Marine appears in the lower right corner, signifying authenticity and official status.
Subject Matter:
The map focuses on Arica, a port city on the coast of what is now northern Chile. During the time of the map's creation, this region was part of Peru. The chart details the coastline, nearby islands, and the layout of the city of Arica, with particular attention to navigational hazards and depth soundings essential for ship approach.
Inscriptions and Notable Features:
The map includes an inset titled "Vue d'Arica," which offers a visual depiction of the coastal landscape as seen from the sea. This inset provides mariners with a visual reference to aid in identifying the coastline upon approach. Other inscriptions include navigational notes and details about the survey conducted aboard the frigate La Clorinde, commanded by Baron de Mackau.
Cultural and Historical Context:
The creation of this map falls within a period of intense European maritime exploration and colonial expansion. The detailed cartographic work reflects the European powers' interest in South American coasts for both trade and military purposes. The map was published by order of the King of France, emphasizing its strategic importance.
Atlas and Publication Details:
This map is part of volume 7 of the Neptune Francois atlas, an extensive collection of maritime charts. The atlas, originally from the library of the Duc d'Orleans, includes charts that are largely based on Spanish Marine charts from the early 1800s. The volume in which this map appears is notable for featuring a blend of original and updated charts, reflecting the ongoing European interest in documenting and controlling maritime routes.
