This is the first year that Colton published this map. Iowa is now fully developed with counties, and there is major railroad growth in Indiana and Illinois, among other changes from the 1850 edition. This is probably the late 1852 issue - Karrow 1-1578 is the same map without Colton's name in the title, indicating that Colton took over publishing the map later in the year. Full color by county. Map is dissected into 36 sections, mounted on linen. Folds into marbled end sheets and a new black cloth folding case 36x30 with "Colton's Map Of The United States J. Calvin Smith 1852" stamped in gold on the spine.
