This Colton puzzle map uses the map of the United States that first appeared in Colton's Cabinet Atlas of 1859, and was later used in Colton's School Atlas of 1864 and American School Quarto Geography of 1865. The puzzle itself is undated, but the map is copyrighted in 1860. Accompanying the puzzle is a separate copy of the map to use as a guide in assembling the puzzle. Mitchell produced a Dissected Map puzzle in 1854 (Williams p. 98) and Colton is undoubtedly competing with that in issuing this series of dissected maps.
