Engraved map in Russian of Northern California and Mexico, Baja California. Shows international and administrative boundaries, cities, towns, rivers and mountains. Relief shown by hachures. Date is estimated based on showing of Pyramid Lake from the Fremont 1845 map. The map appears to have been published in Russia as a separate map, not in any reports we can locate. It shows the Russian settlement at Fort Ross on the California coast. It might have been a map advocating for increased Russian exploration and settlement in California. There is no mention of the gold rush on the map, thus it is likely to have been published before 1849. We have not been able to located any other copies at libraries.

With eleven pages of text titled "Particulars of Routes, Distances, Fares, &c., to Accompany Colton's Map of California and the Gold Region. Collected from Official Documents." On the map there is a view of Pyramid Lake over the title, taken from the Fremont Report and inset maps of the Gold Region and South America, showing the route around Cape Horn. Ackerman did the Lithography for this map as well as the Map of California, Oregon, and Texas (see our #98). This is the second state of the map - the first appeared in Fayette Robinson's "California and its Gold Regions" issued earlier in 1849 (see our 5029). Streeter: "This appears to be the first Colton map showing the gold fields." The North American portion of the map is taken from the North American map inset to the huge Smith/Colton "Map of the United States and the Canadas..." first issued in 1844; this inset later became the Johnson Family Atlas North American map of 1860. The map and the view of Pyramid Lake also appears in a Disturnell/Colton map of North America issued in 1854 and earlier (see our 3507). Outline color. Map is folded into dark blue cloth covers 13.5x8.5 with "Colton's Map Of The United States, Mexico &c. Shewing the Gold Region in California" printed in black on a tan paper label.

This is a major revision of the guide with an entirely new map by Ira S. Drake (about whom we find nothing) with five inset maps entitled - "Vicinity Of Niagara Falls", "Map Of The Copper Mine Region", "Map of the Gold and Quicksilver district of California", "Map of the Maritime and Overland Routes to California", and "Map Of New England Or Eastern States". The map emphasis on the California gold rush is clear, although the 128 pages of expanded text do not yet list routes to the gold fields, while they do add routes west from St. Louis and Independence. The main map is larger than the earlier Mitchell/Young maps, but shows roughly the same area on a somewhat larger scale. An "Advertisement" (actually a preface) dated Nov. 1, 1848, states: "The following work is similar in design to 'Mitchell's Traveller's Guide,' first published about twelve years ago, and which has been so extremely patronized, that it may be safely asserted no book of the kind ever printed in this country has met with so wide a circulation." Covers are black stamped leather with "Mitchell's New Traveller's Guide Through The United States" and a beautiful illustration of a steam boat and train stamped in gilt. Map is outline color. Catalogue of Thomas, Cowperthwait School Books included in the text.

Note
With the wide (1.5 inch) ornamental border and printed on heavy paper. Similar to but an earlier version of the Upper or New California and Oregon portion of the Atwood and Ensigns & Thayer's Map of the United States, 1849. Closer to and derived from their Pictorial Map of the United States of 1847 (see Wheat). Also has a map of North and South America from an unknown source. Under the maps are two blocks of text, one titled "Important Directions to Persons Emigrating to California" and the other titled "Description of California or the new Gold Region." Another version of this map was published on thinner paper and with a 5/16 inch ornamental border (Wheat 85) (see our copy- the title is in different print). The geography of the west is pre-Fremont 1848 unlike the 1849 Map of the United States which incorporates Fremont 1848. This makes us think that the map may be 1848 - there is no date on the map and Wheat estimates the date from sources he does not mention (other than finding the thinner paper copy in a book published in 1849). Full color. Relief shown by hachures.

This is taken from Tanner's Map of the United States of Mexico, with the addition of the California Gold Regions colored in yellow, and an added inset map of "United States, Mexico &c. Shewing the Routes from N. York to St. Francisco by Land & Water." The map has been updated to show Fremont's route across the Great Basin and the "Boundary of 1848" with Mexico. The 14x9 cover entitled "Tanner's Travelling Map of California & c has on the inside front a "Table of Routes from New-York to California, with the Modes of Conveyance, Distances, Time and Fares." This is a very late map for Tanner, still printed from engraved plates (although the impression looks a bit tired), in the next to last year of his publishing career. He died in Brooklyn in 1858.

This is the thin paper copy with smaller ornamental border and no publisher credit. Wheat believes it was folded into some copies of Farnham's "Life, Adventures, and Travels in California;" our copies of that book have the Haven map pasted in one (see our #3963) and this map pasted in the other (see our #5001). This copy shows signs of being folded. It was probably sold with the book and separately. The text is the same as the broadside issue but the title is in different type. Scarce.

Gold Rush Historian James Delgado generously shared with us his knowledge of the background of this map: "Moses Yale Beach, the owner/publisher of the New York Sun, purchased Apollo for a speculative voyage to San Francisco in early 1849, and sent it off with a full load pf passengers and cargo, with son Joseph Perkins Beach as the ship’s supercargo, in charge of the business affairs. My book for the Book Club was the edited and annotated journal of the voyage kept by Joseph Perkins Beach. Apollo arrived on September 18, 1849; after the passengers and baggage were offloaded, Joseph, joined by his brother Henry Day Beach, who had come out separately, offered the cargo for sale with Apollo noted as lying off the foot of Sacramento Street. It moved slowly, and the crew deserted, so the Beach brothers decided to run Apollo up onto the mud and turn it into a storeship, as suggested by Moses Beach and also perhaps inspired by Niantic, a July 1849 arrival beached at the foot of Clay (at what is now Clay and Sansome) just as Apollo arrived. The Beach brothers paid $200 to run the ship ashore at the foot of Sacramento on waterlot #171, and there, dismasted, and emptied of ballast, facing west with the stern close to what would become Battery street, Apollo was readied for storeship use. A January 2, 1850 advertisement called for carpenters and wharfing work, and soon the decks were covered by a two-story building that conformed to the shape of the ship. Sixteen days later, they advertised Apollo was ready to “receive goods upon moderate rates of storage.” The Sun Lithographic Establishment, owned by Moses Yale Beach back in New York, published a broadside of the ship advertising it with its “uncommon advantages for storage of all descriptions.” The map just published is clearly another business booster prepared by Papa for his boys (and the family investment). Unfortunately for the Beach’s, the business faltered. Advertisements in the San Francisco Daily Alta California paint a picture of increased desperation, as does private correspondence between the brothers and the folks back in New York. Henry Day beach wrote home in January 1850, noting that “the way I worked and toiled on the Apollo property (I know it has shortened by life 5 years) has effectively cured me of speculation in this country.” The brothers leased the storeship to a firm, Reese & Blakely, in August 1850, but there were dozens of competing storeships. That makes the map all the more interesting, because looking at it, potential investors back east would think there was only one, the centrally located, accessible Apollo. Unless you went, you wouldn’t know of the other ships or of the crowded waterfront that hemmed in Apollo. Hope of recouping the investment vanished when Apollo, along with much of the rest of the city and the waterfront, burned to the ground in the May 4, 1851 fire that devastated the city. The burned out remains of Apollo were encountered by construction excavation in 1901, 1921 and 1925, and portions of it remain beneath the former Federal Reserve Bank at Sacramento and Battery. Every time I’m in town and walk by, I silently salute Apollo, as well as the buried bones of the storeships Niantic, General Harrison and Thomas Bennett that lie close by. THANK You for finding and presenting this map."

Shows the Gold Regions in California. Atwood made important maps of the Gold Rush for Colton and Ensign & Thayer in 1849. In this map he publishes his own Gold Rush map, showing the routes to California and Oregon. This map is rare: it is not in Philips, Karrow, Wheat, Streeter, Graff, or nine years of Jolly. Wheat Gold 258 is an 1854 derivative of this map put out by Ensign, Bridgman & Fanning. This 1851 map is very well done, and possibly the only map that Atwood published under his own name. See our 2878 and 3209 for related maps. Full color. Folded into red embossed cloth covers 14.5x9.5 with title "Map Of The United-States Canada, Mexico, Central America And The West India Islands" stamped in black.

This is one of the most attractive of the California Gold Rush period maps. Here it is published in pocket map form, with the 16 page "Appendix to Jackson's Map..." which describes the important mining centers. More ornate and detailed than Jackson's map of 1850, this is the only map to label Santa Cruz county "Branciforte." Shows for the first time, some of the mining activity in the south, which Jackson was involved with as an engineer. Map is full color by county, folded into dark green cloth covers 15x10 with "Jackson's Map Of The Mining Districts Of California" stamped in gilt.

See our #3507 and #170 for related maps. This map shows most of Alaska but not as far north as #3507. It is not clear where this map came from - it was folded to fit into a quarto sized book (not present here), and it may have been in the 1852 issue of the United States Register by John Disturnell, as #3507 was in the 1854 United States Register (see our 1861 U.S. Register by Disturnell with a smaller Colton Map). This map was also published in 1852 to accompany volume one of Richard Swainson Fisher's "The Book of The World", NY, J.H. Colton, two volumes, 8vo. It has the inset map of the gold regions, and the inset has been updated with many towns, etc. The main map has also been updated in the West, showing Utah, New Mexico, California, reduced Texas, etc. There is no inset map of South America as appears in the 1849 issue, and this map extends much further to the north to include most of Canada and about half of Alaska. All three of these maps were probably derived from Colton's Map of North America that is listed in his catalogues from 1851 to 1855 and is somewhat larger, we assume because of decorative borders. Strangely, that map is not found in any references. Without color. Includes view: Pyramid Lake, Upper California (i.e., Nevada)
